All Dying On The Western Front
Advantages: Perfect picture of war, deep characters, harsh lessons, undeniable realism
Disadvantages: Crushingly realistic, morbid at times
...All Quiet on The Western Front is a phrase synonymous with an uneventful day on the frontlines of a battlefield. however, it is a actually a crude translation of a line from this gripping, intense story of a group of young comrades trapped in the bleak, unforgiving trenches of the First World War, refreshingly, told from the perspective of a German soldier. Being British, this is an angle all too rarely explored with the German's usually portrayed as nameless, faceless, soulless, broken-german spouting targets in uniforms. However this book does the unusual task of humanising all of the unfortunate souls who fought and in many cases, perished in such a tragic conflict, regardless of birthplace.
The book is written by Erich Maria Remarque, a young man conscripted into the German forces in 1917, who fought in the war until being wounded...

Best Western Le Donjon Les Ramparts certainly not Best Value
Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Split into different buildings, expensive.
...?? you guessed it back in the first building we visited. Begrudgingly we made our way back across the city, dodging ?sword sellers? on the way.
RoomsThe building itself looked ?ok? I can?t really describe it any other way, it was a square building with grey walls but on entering it was actually very well set out. Stone floors and stairs, interesting antiques and very clean so I was quite looking forward seeing the rooms. Well I was disappointed. The rooms pictured on the Best Western website looked nothing like ours. I can only imagine that they are executive rooms and not standard ones. While ?grumpy?s? room had been recently refurbished ours looked like something from the Crossroads Motel. (Old midlands soap opera).
It was shabby! The furniture had seen better days, the walls could have done with a lick of paint and you had...

Good-if-you're-First-Class Great Western
Advantages: Nice design
Disadvantages: Late, completely packed
...I guess most reviews come from the fact that people either have something really great they want to tell people about, or really bad that they want to moan about. To be honest I would love this to be a big rant about Great Western, but I'm going to keep my comments fair, because although they do a lot of things wrong, there are also some things that I do actually like about the way they run their service.
I started getting First Great Western trains from Reading a couple of months ago. I generally get the rush hour trains in and back, but I do also have experience of using their trains during off-peak hours as I used to travel a lot on them at the weekends last year. Generally I am travelling between Reading and London Paddington, but I have also taken trains to other stops around the area such as Oxford.
~~An average day...

Hotel Best Western Obelisk - Istanbul
Advantages: 3* Hotel in a 5* location
Disadvantages: Noisy rooms.
...This Best Western hotel is one of about six Best Western Hotels all in this old part of Istanbul known as Sultanahmet.
It really is in a very convenient location and the LOCATION is its greatest asset. It is a three star hotel in an area containing five star holiday attractions.
The hotel advertises its roof terrace as the sort of restaurant under the stars of everyone's dreams. I thought it was jaded and thus overrated with a distant view of the sea which was hardly on the waterfront.
The rooms are OK. I had a de-luxe room which had been reduced on-line from an advertised price of Euros 134 to Euros 75.The TV had CNN and BBC World and the bed was very comfortable. I found the decor a bit drab. A buffet breakfast on the roof was fine but the service was non-existent. Didn't really matter though - the stuff was all there, I...

Best Western Kiel Germany
Advantages: good location with ample free parking
Disadvantages: a bit spartan and threadbare
...Kiel is not the most conducive place for a winter holiday so it has to be reasoned that anyone wishing to stay there then would either do so on business or in transit.
Being the main centre for U Boat construction during WW2, Keil was then a favourite destination for RAF Bomber Command and was badly damaged; the reconstruction is about as imaginative as some similar city centres in the UK such as Plymouth - in other words a quick-fix urban monstrosity.
The Best Western Hotel in Kiel rose up out of an existing office block and despite some attempts to disguise the fact, it shows. In terms of four star status it doesn't deserve it if you compare what you get in most four star hotels in the rest of Europe.
I stayed there for four days in the middle of January 2009.
It was comfortable. No frills, no pretty soaps or shampoos - no...

"All Quiet on the Western Front"
Advantages: Extremely educational and entertaining
Disadvantages: WW1 at times grim and depressing
...This item was originally sold for £9.99, but Amazon prices it at £5.97. The DVD is a single disk containing the film, no extra features which is a little disappointing.
* * * * *
I'm doing lots of World War 1 literature for my English A-level.
But among all the videos, poems, biographies, and documentaries, this is one of my favourites. 'All Quiet on the Western Front' first grabbed my attention because it sounds so poetic, so familiar. However the deepest irony is that the front was never quiet, constantly bashed into craters by heavy shell-fire.
Before this DVD (a 1979 remake of the classic black and white film) I had no idea what the trenches were really like. What is somewhat unique is that this story is seen from the German perspective. What is heartwarming and depressing is that it is very much like our own story...

The Best Western Hotel Montana, a great base in Zurich
Advantages: Bacon and eggs on the breakfast buffet, English spoken.
Disadvantages: Expensive, but it is in Zurich!
...Best Western Montana, Zurich is very close to the main Zurich railway station which was our reason for choosing this hotel. We paid £323 for three nights bed and breakfast in a double room. For Zurich this did not seem to be bad value for money.
The hotel has a restaurant serving evening meals but we did not try them as they seemed a bit pricey for what we wanted, and we found good food available elsewhere, notably at the station.
On arrival our reservation was easily found, we had booked through Alpharooms. The receptionist changed to English as soon as we spoke to her and there was no language problem at all. The lift up to our room was glass and we could see right through the hotel, this was a stylish feature which I rather liked. The lift was very smooth.
Our room was a reasonable size with a shower room ensuite. The view from...

Worst Great Western? I don't think so.
Advantages: Clean trains and facilities, helpful staff
Disadvantages: The seats are so comfortable you are in danger of sleeping past your stop.
...'s stations along the network. I have yet to see a station where there are no facilities for the disable person. Where there are toilets on a station or train, there is always a disable toilet too. Also there doesnt seem to be anywhere that doesnt have a step free access point, or a life of some sort. As well as this, there is always someone happy to help, for example, with a portable ramp, beween the train and the platform egde. FGW have done really well on this score.
RELIABILITY OF THE TRAINS.
There is where FGW let themselves down. This is why they have a lot of delays. I think this is also why they have earned their name of "Worst Great Western". The trains are forever experiencing some problem or other. I mean I cant really count the times where I have been on a train, only for us to stop in the middle of nowhere, because of a red...
