A beautiful cathedral
Advantages: Beautiful cathedral and friendly guides
Disadvantages: None
...On a recent short break in Ripon, and having a liking for cathedrals as I do, I took the time to visit Ripon Cathedral with my partner.
Located just five minutes walk from the market square area of Ripon town centre, the cathedral is very easy to reach. There is also a car park a couple of minutes walk from the cathedral.
Ripon Cathedral is unusual in that, in common with only one other Cathedral in the country, it also functions as a Parish Church.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A LITTLE HISTORY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Cathedral building itself began in the 7th century when St Wilfrid built one of England's first stone churches on the site.
St Wilfrid was educated at Lindisfarne and then travelled to Rome in 652. On his return, he became abbot of a Benedictine monastery and built a church in Ripon. The crypt of the church is the oldest existing...

An Icy Cathedral
Advantages: Interesting place of worship
Disadvantages: Gets busy
...The Arctic cathedral in Tromsø stood out amongst the smaller houses surrounding it and was visible long before we approached the bridge to cross over to the mainland. The unusual shape representing the shape of a Sami (the people who tend the reindeer) tent and the iciness of a glacier was built in 1965 on a site that was originally a bunker, being close to Russia they were prepared. The huge white walls form an A shape and there are windows at both ends of the building. The walls are 11 pieces of concrete covered with Aluminium, which represent the 11 apostles left after the betrayal of Christ. Between the wall sections is glass which lets light into the church, supplying much of the inside light in the church, especially during the midnight sun season.
With the mountain behind covered in trees it stood out well, but when the snow...

Cathedral
Advantages: Good
Disadvantages: None
...One of the great buildings of the world and it is the largest cathedral in Britain and 5th largest in the world. The cathedral has high gothic arches and bells in the tower. The construction of the cathedral was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott. Car Parking is available at the Cathedral, with a charge of £1. Multi stormy car parking is available nearer the city centre in Mount Pleasant and in neighboring Duke Street. There is some limited free street parking available. Entry to the cathedral is free of charge, but donations are invited - £3.00 (?4/$5US) is suggested. Prices for the Tower are £4.25 with concessions at £2.50. A family ticket for up to 2 adults and 3 children is £10.00.
A visit is highly recommended....

Canterbury Cathedral
Advantages: Historical benefits, good attraction for all the family to learn about
Disadvantages: Mnay steps to climb.Apart form that none
...Well as my Dover castle review seemed to go down rather well with ratings received, and this is a rather local attraction to me, I thought I would do a review won Canterbury cathedral.
I can view this beautifully from my office window on my construction site, which I think is a privilege really.
History of the Cathedral
Well I should think most people know something about the cathedral and its history but I will merely scratch the surface of it in this review im sure?
The Cathedral was founded in 597AD by St Augustine who landed on the south east corner of England as a missionary from Rome.
St Augustine was given a site in Canterbury to set up his church and this was St Martins, which still stands today.
This was given to him by the then King of England Ethelbert. This Church was used throughout the Roman occupation and in...

Bradford Cathedral
Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: The roof and chairs are very odd
...On the 7th November 2008 the Al Mahdi Mosque was officially opened in the centre of Bradford. It's a sign of the changing times and reaffirms the fact that Bradford is a multi cultural city with a huge Muslim population. This Mosque is a magnificent building, clearly visible from afar, standing like a palace against the skyline. I happened by chance to be in Bradford on the date of the Mosque's inauguration but by a rather spooky coincidence I was actually in Bradford to see a much older place of worship - its Anglican Cathedral.
To begin with I had quite a bit of trouble locating the Cathedral. I knew that there was one and I knew that it was fairly central but despite easily finding the City Hall and other landmarks I seemed to have walked around in a large circle before I eventually spotted a sign pointing down a narrow alleyway...

Hereford Cathedral - An 'ICON'ic Specticle.
Advantages: History, Architecture, Stained Glass windows, beauty.
Disadvantages: Modern art
...HEREFORD CATHEDRAL
On our weekend away in Hereford, I could not miss the opportunity to visit this lovely historic building again. I admit I have seen more beautiful and spectacular Cathedrals and even churches; but this one has a beauty all of its own.
In one sense we picked the right time of year to visit as there were not too many tourists, but on the other hand it is January, it is quite cold (although the cathedral did have a great heating system) and the Library and the Mappa Mundi were not available to be seen.
The Mappa Mundi is the largest complete medieval world map which is housed in the cathedral alongside the chained library which houses manuscripts dating back to the 8th century. Sadly we did not get to this wonderful piece of history as it was closed for cleaning and some restoration work.
So back to our...

Guides are usually on duty to show you round and explain the mission of the Cathedral. Photography is permitted in the Cathedral except during Services.

Westminster Abbey, grand historic experience
Advantages: History and religion well presented
Disadvantages: None that I found
...HERE NOVEMB. 15.1635.
LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Taking hundreds of years to construct, Westminster Abbey is an architectural gem and it's easy to see why it has been described as ''unique pageant of British history'' where you will see tombs of kings and queens, the shrine of St Edward the Confessor, set in quiet grandeur. It is still a fully operative church, regular worship as well as grand national occasions take place here, including every coronation since 1066, royal weddings and funerals. (Apparently when stating the claim that every monarch has been crowned at Westminster Abbey there needs to be a clarification: there were two exceptions: Edward V and Edward VIII were never crowned - so that clears that up for history boffins reading this.)
Apparently it is neither a cathedral or a parish church but a ''Royal Peculiar...

Ely cathedral
Advantages: Old, beautiful, nice tombs
Disadvantages: None
...A few weeks ago the present Mr Tart and myself spent the weekend in Cambridge. We were only a few miles away from Ely and despite some claims that he was ?History-ed' out he agreed to drive there on the Sunday morning. I was really excited about seeing the cathedral being a bit of a History nut. I love cathedrals and have a thing about seeing them whenever I go somewhere I havent been before.
SOME HISTORY:
An abbey was founded on the site in around 673 by Saint Etheldreda (youve got to love those Saxon names!). The cathedral was begun in the 11th century. The monastery part of the Cathedral was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539 and some parts of the Cathedral were destroyed, such as Saint Etheldredas shrine.
GETTING THERE:
Ely is in Cambridgeshire, about 14 miles north of Cambridge. It is on the A10. Driving towards the city...

Gargoyles smoking cigars , Chichester Cathedral
Advantages: FREE, interesting art work and a Cathedral in daily use
Disadvantages: It is a church so may not appeal to all
...Chichester Cathedral, Chichester, Sussex
Chichester Cathedral is a Christian church built over 900 years ago in the city of Chichester in Sussex. It has had a mixed history and been rebuilt and had other parts added over the years. In 1075 William the Conqueror ordered a cathedral to be built in Chichester and the main part of the present building was dedicated in 1108. Then again after two serious fires it was re - consecrated in 1199. The 277 ft spire is actually Victorian although it was originally added in the late 13th or early 14th century after it collapsed in 1861 it was rebuilt by Sir Gilbert Scott in four years.
During the fifteenth century several important features were added to the cathedral: the cloisters, enclosing the south transept; the detached bell-tower, and the spire these changed the shape of the Cathedral...
