Vic Reeves Big Night Out began life as a theatre show in South East London in 1987. It was a tumultuous passionate and Hogarthian display of glee filled music hall nonsense that lasted up to three hours long. Each week the show was freshly written and the supporters flocked from distant regions to applaud this diabolical infringement on taste and dignity. In 1990 the show was pared down to half an hour and transferred to Channel 4 where it aired to total and undiluted indifference! Within a week it had become a monumental success! Viewers from parishes as far away as Weston-Super-Mare and Bangkok tuned in in order to relish the amusements displayed by characters such as 'The Man with the Stick' 'Les' and 'Wavy Davy'.Vic's chief diversion was however the monstrously deformed yet highly animated 'Bob' Mortimer his nemesis and inquisitor without whom he could never have existed! Between the pair of them they forged new and undiscovered paths in the world of light entertainment! The Digital VD you are considering buying for a distant nephew contains the complete episodes of their two series' before they were shot plus numerous supplements including interviews with the culprits and the people who endorsed their meagre talent.

In 1924 pioneering filmmaker Claude Friese-Greene embarked on an intrepid road trip from Land's End to John O'Groats. He recorded his journey on film using an experimental colour process; the result was remarkable travelogue called The Open Road. Reviewers hailed the film as an amazing success at which audiences would 'gasp with wonder' for at a time when cinemagoers saw their world only in black and white Claude's remarkable films were shot in colour.Eighty years after Claude's original trip the BBC and the British Film Institute have recreated the journey and in this three-part series Dan Cruickshank retraces Claude's route through the heart of Britain. Drawing fully on Claude's original footage which has been meticulously restored by the bfi this wonderful series affords contemporary audiences a vibrant glimpse at life in the 1920s and a chance to examine not only how much has changed but also all that has remained the same since that time.On our route through scenic West Country into Wales up the west coast to Scotland and on to John O'Groats we hear from a cast of characters - not only relatives and friends of those who appear in Claude's footage but those who featured in the films as children and who describe the moving experience of encountering themselves within this beautiful footage.Episode 1 - Land's End to Weston-super-MareEpisode 2 - Cirencester to CarlisleEpisode 3 - Gretna Green to John O'Groats

Advantages: Cheap and cheerful day out. Disadvantages: Too many people on the routes there in the Summer.
...I thought I'd write a Weston-Super-Mare review since my husband and I took our little ones there today for a spot of sandcastle building. As we only live 15 minutes away, down the M5, it's a place I have frequented throughout my life.
My Grandparents live in Worle which is just off the motorway on the way in to Weston, and always took us to the seafront in the Summer, so this is the place I...
Advantages: clean, next to a pub, ensuite, tea and hot chocolate, big room, heater Disadvantages: noisy carpark, no tv remote, easy book didnt work on website
...We were looking for a hotel or guesthouse in weston-super-mare but for the same price as a small guesthouse with shared bathrooms you can go to the travel inn and have ensuite for just £42.95 per room... it doesnt matter what room you have , single, double, family - the price remains the same.
Booking the inn did have its problems. I wanted to use the 'easy book' system they have on their...
Advantages: Huge sweeping beach, excellent for families, well connected, inexpensive Disadvantages: Pier *still* not open, mud flats can be dangerous
...Weston-super-Mare (henceforth simply "Weston", as most people who know the place refer to it as a rule) is an old-fashioned sort of seaside resort. For some people that might be considered an insult, but I certainly don't mean it as such. Personally I get a little bit tired with the constant striving of certain other resorts to compete head-on with the likes of Tunisia and Queensland. I've got...
