The "God question" remains a thorny one for the leading protagonists of My Name is Legion, AN Wilson's impressive Waugh-esque satire of the Fourth Estate. Previously, God's Funeral surveyed what Wilson referred to as the "collective nervous breakdown" that occurred in the Victorian era. God was dead and we, with our new fangled rationalism, had killed him, to paraphrase Nietzsche. The title, from Mark's gospel, provides the name of the newspaper at the centre of the novel, The Legion, (an evil rag that peddles celebrity tittle-tattle and denounces asylum-seekers and "Belgian bureaucrats" for "tampering with the good British Banana") but it also alludes to one of the characters, Peter/Tuli, an unbalanced south-London teenager troubled by voices (if not actually devils). Matters of faith are central to The Legion's grotesquely immoral African proprietor, Lennox Mark. The newspaper man wants to be rid of his belief in God and his nemesis, Father Vyvian Chell, a troublesome priest, who is campaigning, in the military sense of the word, for the overthrow of a corrupt regime that keeps Mark's business empire afloat. (General Bindiga of Mark's native Zinariya--whom Chell schooled and once supported-- is always assured a good press in The Legion.) Both men (Chell and Mark), not incidentally, since this is a richly plotted novel, could be Peter's father--his mother Mercy doesn't know for sure. Wilson is a former literary editor for the Evening Standard and this novel is something of a Roman à clef, or as he's still a columnist with that newspaper, possibly, a 500-odd page resignation letter. The vipers pit that is Fleet Street (or more precisely in the book, Bermondsey) is unflinchingly portrayed--from the machinations of the owner, his wife and her lesbian lover, right down to the familiar peccadilloes of hacks and the obligatory unrequited office romance: Sinclo's puppyish infatuation with his arts editor colleague Rachel. Comparisons with Scoop are inevitable, perhaps even invited--LP Watson, the paper's jaded, adulterous and utterly corrupted columnist is a former travel writer and poet whose book Amazonians, an account of a South American canoe journey, sounds not far off John Boot's Waste of Time. (And is the use of those initials intended to ring a few alarm bells too?) But Wilson's it's-all-gone-to-hell-in-a-handcart vision of the media and Britain, "governed" here by a God-bothering, honours-dispensing Prime Minister with estuary diction, is Amisian (Kingsley rather than Martin) in its withering despair. And, arguably, the novel is all the more engaging for it, but there are moments when it its sentiments appear to veer towards the very why-oh-why journalism it wants to mock. --Travis Elborough ... less

Michael Crawford is one of Britain's best-loved entertainers, with roles as varied as the hapless accident-prone Frank Spencer in the 1970s sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave Em, and the menacing creature of the night in Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1980s smash-hit musical The Phantom of the Opera. It's hard to believe that the ever-youthful thespian has been in the profession for over 40 years, when a lead role in the school production led him swiftly to become a fully-fledged teenage actor. Parcel Arrived Safely: Tied With String (the unusual title refers to the telegram announcing his birth) is Crawford's warm, engaging autobiography, from the early years with his mother and grandmother ("from the very beginning there didn't seem to be a time when I wasn't surrounded by women"), to the hard slog of stage work and film acclaim in the 1960s with A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, How I Won The War, and The Jokers to name but a few.But it is three very different roles that made Crawford's name and for which he will be best remembered: the classic comedy of idiotic Frank Spencer, black beret set jauntily at an angle as he finds himself caught up in yet another hair-raising adventure (it comes as no surprise that Crawford, a true professional, did all his own stunts), the unicycling showman of Barnum (another gruelling physical schedule), and the masked misfit who just wants to be loved in the phenomenally successful stage version of The Phantom of the Opera, which revealed Crawford's tireless energy as a performer and showcased his powerful singing voice. Parcel Arrived Safely is an unselfconscious, generous memoir, full of hilarious anecdotes and starstruck encounters. It provides an excellent overview of growing up in post-war suburbia and of British comedy in the 1960s and 70s, and above all Crawford shows that his stability and focus come from the support of his late mother and grandmother, his ex-wife and their two daughters. " My mother used to tell me I had St Vitus's dance" he writes, "the truth is I was hyperactive, always running, always busy, taking things apart, putting them together; always imagining and inventing; endlessly competing, challenging, and questioning." Facing a move to the next school can be daunting one; not only for the child but also for those who care for them. 'Look at Me, I'm Growing Up' chart prepares young children facing that change, giving them an understanding of what is expected of them. It also supports and gives guidance to the parents and carers detailing how important their role is during this time. The activities include: I am clean and tidy, I have eaten my fruit and vegetables, I have drunk lots of water, I have shared nicely and taken my turn, I have dressed myself, I have practised writing my name and I have done what I've been asked to do. On the chart children record their achievements with coloured numbered stickers. Simple goals can be set to encourage the children to complete a row of 10. This method of reward also helps with colour and number awareness. ... less

Is UK garage going to explode or implode? Who knows? It certainly did a lot of exploding in the late 90s and early 21st century, with chart hits and exposure galore. The Dreem Team are firmly on the expansionist side, moving their radio show from the London-based Kiss FM, to the wider-reaching Galaxy FM and now to the biggest of them all, Radio 1. This compilation continues their outward momentum and like may others takes few chances, staying on garage's more acceptable R&B smooth side exemplified by tracks like Destiny's Child's "Say My Name", the B15 projects's "Girls Like Us" and Colour Girl's "Joyrider". There's also a fair smattering of old school British soul such as Wookie's mix of Soul II Soul's " What's Goin' On" and Omar's "Nothing Like This" as well as golden oldies like Crystal Water's "Gypsy Woman" and The Gap Band's "Outstanding". The mixing is smooth, like the trio's pin-up profile, but avoids the bump and flow or "rupture", as author Tricia Rose would have it, that makes club music so exciting. The Dreem Team opt in favour of something more widely digestible. But as physics tells us every reaction has an opposite reaction and the dark side will have its revenge soon. --Jake Barnes ... less

His adventures have been read by millions of people around the world in several different languages, yet much of his life remains shrouded in mystery. He lives in seclusion in the depths of Ireland. And he never drinks blood. Or so he claims. MY NAME'S Darren Shan. I'm a half-vampire. I wasn't born that way. I used to be ordinary. I lived at home with my parents and younger sister, Annie. I enjoyed school and had lots of friends. I liked reading horror stories and watching scary movies. When a freak show came to town, my best mate, Steve Leopard, got tickets and we went. It was great, really spooky and weird. A super night out. But the weirdest part came after the show. Steve recognized one of the characters from the show ... he'd seen a drawing of him in an old book and knew he was- a vampire. He stuck around after the show and asked the vampire to turn him into one, too! Mr Crepsley - the vampire - would have, but he found out Steve's blood was evil, and that was the end of that. Or it would have been the end, except I stuck around, too, to see what Steve was up to. ... less

Dutch: A memoir of Ronald Reagan - Edmund Morris
Why did Pulitzer Prize-winning Theodore Roosevelt biographer Edmund Morris controversially choose to write his authorised biography of Ronald Reagan in the...... more
Why did Pulitzer Prize-winning Theodore Roosevelt biographer Edmund Morris controversially choose to write his authorised biography of Ronald Reagan in the form of an historical novel? There's a clue in a quote the book attributes to Jane Wyman, Reagan's first wife. As Ronnie speechified about the Red menace at a 1940s Hollywood party, Wyman allegedly whispered to a friend, "I'm so bored with him, I'll either kill him or kill myself." This anecdote, if true, is more revealing than Nancy Reagan's charge in the book that Jane had attempted suicide to get Ronnie to marry her in the first place. Jane was no intellectual--Morris cracks that "If Jane had ever heard of Finland, she probably thought it was an aquarium"--but Morris found to his horror, after years of research, that he felt much the same as Jane. Reagan was as boring as a box of rocks and elusive as a ghost. Decades before Alzheimer's clouded Reagan's mind, he showed a terrifying lack of human presence. "I was real proud when Dad came to my high school commencement", reports his son, Michael Reagan. After posing for photos with Michael and his classmates, the future president came up to him, looking right in his eyes, and said, "Hi, my name's Ronald Reagan. What's yours?" Poor Michael replied, "Dad, it's me. Your son. Mike." Despite deep research and unprecedented access--no previous biography has ever been authorised by a sitting president--Morris could get no closer to Reagan's elusive soul than his children could. So he decided to dramatise Reagan's life with several invented characters--including a fictionalised version of himself witnessing scenes in Reagan's life that happened before Morris was born and an imaginary gossip columnist who makes wicked comments on Reagan's career. This is a strange tactic, forcing one constantly to consult the footnotes at the back to sort things out and Morris makes it tougher by presenting his invented characters as real even in the footnotes. Ultimately, the hubbub over Morris's odd method is beside the point. His fictionalising is rooted in Bob Woodward-like research, and his speculative entry into Reagan's life and mind is plausible, dramatic, literary and lit by dazzling flashes of insight. We cannot verify Morris's notion that Reagan probably approved the illegal Iran-Contra funding without having a clue it was illegal, or that the "Star Wars" program sprang from Reagan's role as Brass Bancroft, who used an Inertia Projector to zap bad guys, and his love of Edgar Rice Burroughs' first novel Princess of Mars, which featured glass-domed cities. But however bizarre and ignorant his thoughts were, however cold his heart, the man did crush the "Evil Empire" and, in Morris' opinion, achieve greatness. Morris's book is as bizarre as its subject but he achieves greatness too. --Tim Appelo ... less

~* Oh Na Na What's My Name?!*~
Advantages: Fun! Different! Catchy!
Disadvantages: None!
...What's My Name is a single by Rihanna. It was released in the United Kingdom in December 2010 and features the rapper Drake. This song is taken off her album 'Loud'. The song reached number one in the British singles charts. You can buy the mp3 download version of this song from Amazon for around 89p which I think is great value for money.
This song is really catchy, especially with it...

This film is quite controversial for India as it features a story revolving around the US homeland security, terrorism and a lead character with Asperger?s syndrome.
