Wide angle fun with a capital F

...Overview ------------- I bought the EF 17-40 f4 L about 3 years ago in order to take urban landcape pictures, as buildings often don't fit into a 28mm "frame". This optic is the widest in the f4 constant aperture series of zoom lenses in the trio that includes the 24-105 super-zoom and the 70-200 telephoto, all of which I now own. At the time, I owned a 20D body and the 17-40 was my first L Series purchase as the 1.6 crop factor on the sensor meant that you had to go for a super-wide angle lens to get even moderate wide angle shots (17mm becomes 27mm on an APS sensor). Now I own a 5D body and can make full use of the extraordinary wide angle of view this lens can provide. Being a standard EF mount (not EF-S), this lens can be used on all the Canon bodies. My friend had an EF-S 10-22mm but this became redundant when he upgraded...

Great wide angle for a good price

Disadvantages: not a particularly 'fast' lens

...As a photographer and a student I have a need for (expensive) equipment and very little money with which to buy it. When the need arose for adding a wide angle lens to my kit I did alot of research - looks at specifications, read reviews online/magazines and tested different lenses my self in shops. The 10-20mm by sigma is a fantastic wide angle lens for the price - many wide angle lenses don't go down as far as 10mm but when shelling out money for a wide angle lens my thought was to find the widest possible for the best price and this was it. The lens doesn't let you down in other areas either - the image quality is superb (no visible chromatic abberation). To hold the lens is a good weight and feels well made. The lens is capable of automatic focus as well as manual. If you look at the specifications this isn't exactly the fastest lens...

G5 Wide Angle Lens

Advantages: Able to get more into a picture
Disadvantages: The weight, the length when attached.

The reason for this is that most DSLR cameras have a sensor that is smaller than the standard 24x36mm area on each exposure in a roll of film. ...I bought this lens to use with my 40d before going to a trip in new york city. I needed a wide angle lens for my crop body and this did the trick. I travelled to chicago and I only had the 24-70 and 24mm wasn't enough on the 40d. 17 though is perfect for photographying tall buildings. Sharpness and colors are excellent, as with any L series lenses. Autofocus is very fast and quiet, as it is ring USM Build quality is top notch. If you plan on keeping a lens for a long time, the l series lenses are recommended because no dust will ever get inside the lens because of all the seals. If you buy this lens, you invest in something that will last you for life. It is compatible with every canon cameras, weather sealed (you can shoot in the rain with it if you use it with a 1 series camera) and unbreakable. Just hold one, you'll see what I mean...

...of Canon for surely, such an extreme wide angle lens 'needs' a good lens hood. An essential piece of kit I would think and one should really be included as part of the package. Having said that, the lens isn't particularly prone to flare, even with such a wide angle. Unless the sun is actually within the picture area (when a hood would serve no purpose anyway!), flare isn't usually a problem. The front lens element is a little vulnerable however, and a hood would provide useful additional protection. I would certainly recommend a lens protect, skylight or UV filter to provide ultimate protection but this will make the lens more susceptible to flare and then, that 'missing' hood becomes more of an issue. Come on Canon, get your act together! Quite a bit of effort has gone into the design of this lens. It is evident in the construction...
