...I went to the Theater an der Wien to see Mozart! - The Musical, and was astounded by the stage, which was one of the most elaborate that I had ever seen. By turning up on the night, we were able to get tickets for ATS150 each for seats that usually cost ATS810 each (that's GBP7 instead of GBP40!) and the show was certainly very enjoyable if not the best musical ever written. It is well worth showing your student card, as this helps you to get the discount on the seats. The bar is a bit pricey (as is the wont of theatres across the globe!) and the clientele is a broad cross section, from the very haughty (condescending blue rinse grannies who are only there because they want a change from the Staatsoper!) to students wanting a change from propping up the bar at a Beisl, Keller or Kneipe. Shop Ron, Shop

...Shop-Ron is how Germans pronounce Sopron. An odd name, in many ways, from a British perspective at least since there are very few shops. Sopron is Hungary's "Most Loyal Town" because a very long time ago its residents were offered the chance to become part of the much bigger and better Austria and they declined. You'd never know, though, that it was a separate country as it is swarming with Wien residents daily. Sopron is also Hungary's most historic town as it has 240 listed buildings - the most in the country. This gives rise to a whole host of gorgeous places to look at, and not much else. There're a few museums but not that I would really recommend. One thing you should do is climb the Fire Watch tower and marvel at the view from the top. This costs about 25p for students, 50p for everyone else and so will hardly break...

Review of General: Hungary

CAT - 16 minutes of pleasure

Advantages: quick, easy, cheap service, reliable
Disadvantages: badly signed at both ends

The project to build the CAT link into Vienna?s Wien Mitte station has taken a long time to complete, but was completed on time and after years of Schnellbahn trains at erratic intervals you can finally really get the train to the airport, or rather the airport has come to the city ? as the operators would like to lead you to believe in their publicity! The project has been a joint venture between Vienna Airport and Austrian Federal Railways ? the former supplying the logistical know-how, and check-in facilities, and the latter the platforms and track. Advantages: The work is so unique that worth to give your wife or husband, girlfriend or boyfriend as a gift, or even buy for your own pleasure.
Disadvantages: there is only one shop in London

Also there is a shop M.Frey in London, but they are originally from Wien. The Louvre – Paris, The British Museum, and lots, approves the quality of the work and so do I. :-)...

Lift passes are fairly cheap, with a weekend skipass for an adult costing around ATS 750 for 2 full day's skiing which explains why it is so popular with people living in eastern Austria. Child's lift passes are either ATS 450 or 405ATS depending on whether they are supervised or not for a weekend. Schladming is very easy to get to, with regular train services either from Salzburg (sometimes direct, sometimes having to change at Bischofshofen) or from Wien and Graz, having to change in St Michael. Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) have a special ticket for skiiers, which includes discounts on skipasses, called Wedelweiss. This is typical of the cooperation between the railways and ski resorts, and a further initiative has been taken offering additional services to St Anton am Arlberg during the Alpine Skiing World Cup. Review of Schladming

Home of the Riesenrad

Advantages: cheap rides, relatively short queues
Disadvantages: Not the nicest part of town

...very good views over Vienna on a fine day, and the cost is distinctly cheaper than the London Eye (ATS55 vs ca. ATS170). The Riesenrad is of course famous from the film, "The Third Man" and features in other works of literature. The Prater is easy to get to, and also is home to a large number of trade fairs. Praterstern/Wien Nord is a train, tram and underground station, and a further extension of the U2 will make it even more accessible (this is however someway off - ca. 2006/7). The Prater is a typical fairground and can be very fun for an evening out with friends, although it fairly tame in comparison with Alton Towers....

Love it or hate it

Advantages: Worth seeing for the fact that it is so different
Disadvantages: You can only see the outside

...If you were told that one of Vienna's most popular tourist attractions was a block of council flats, and not one from the inter-war period when Rotes Wien spawned such monoliths as the Karl-Marx-Hof, then you would be forgiven for thinking that your leg was being pulled. Friedensreich Hundertwasser, artist and architect, who is either loved or loathed by the Austrians, was commissioned to design a "Gemeindebau" - or council tenement block in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The resulting Hundertwasserhaus has a near "Hansel and Gretel" appearance, being a multi-coloured, convention defying building to say the least. There are trees on the roof and there are irregularly shaped windows, pavements (deceptively flat!) and as with a lot of Hundertwasser's works, a large amount of Vitreo-ceramic tiling. Suburban Schwechat

Advantages: Good range of destinations, good public transport to the city centre
Disadvantages: Not very central location

...At first sight Schwechat appears to be a little out on a limb, being situated a reasonable distance away from Vienna city centre. This gives the impression that it is also hard to get to. In fact the public transport options are very good indeed, with a regular bus service from Westbahnhof, via the Südbahnhof and to the city centre (Buses leave from what is called the "City Air Terminal" - located next to Wien Mitte) and they cost a very reasonable ATS70 (GBP3.50) one way which takes about 35-40 minutes. Alternatively there is a direct S-Bahn service, best caught from Wien Mitte, which takes you direct to the airport. It costs ATS38 for a single out to the airport by train. The shopping at Schwechat is not outstanding, but a lot of European Airport's has felt less need to have a good shopping provision with the removal of duty free...
