Blatty's pinnacle

Advantages: Plausible horror that makes you think
Disadvantages: Requires a commitment to think about the issues it raises

...This book is the foremost novel of demonic possesion availible. The exorcist deals with more issues than most horror novels and is better written than the recent imitations. Blatty's novel looks at the religious issues arisiung from possession as well as the psychological effects on both priest and possessed. The novels pace speeds up as it progresses and Blatty's descriptions of possession are frighteningly realistic. The book is well plotted but its movement is more in the mind of the characters than in the physical progression of the story. This is one of the best horror novels around and it goes far deeper than the superficial film would allow to you believe. For any one interested in the modern churches acceptence of possession and the mechanics of exorcism this is a must read. For any one wanting a simple violent story...

Review of The Exorcist - William Peter Blatty

A very good book to read

Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -

...One of my favourite horror books to read, I must have read it a dozen times but still enjoy it considerably. Having watched the film it was a good follow up and although some bits were different it was still a very good book. I don’t think I have read a horror book and felt so frightened as I did after reading this. It really does give you the creeps….. I find William Blatty such a excellent writer, his writing skills are excellent, and throughout the book there’s excellent descriptions, eerie tones, chilling atmosphere so much so that I never thought a book could have so much impact on a person. Without spoiling the book for some who haven’t seen it, I will only give a brief plot: Eleven year old Regan is showing signs of abnormal behaviour, her mother Chris MacNeil is very concerned and fears...

Review of The Exorcist - William Peter Blatty

Much more than a horror yarn

Advantages: Intertwines human strife with supernatural occurances
Disadvantages: Adapted from a film often dismissed as simply grotesque

.... Now, sadly, only a small community of people see the whole idea for what Mr Blatty intended it to be - the acceptance of evil without cynicism, then holding onto hope by the fingernails despite unimagineable horrors manifested not only physically, but also emotionally, psychologically and spiritually, and then the eventual triumph of good over evil. The Exorcist's plot is (only) what many people see when they read the book or watch the film, which conerns a twelve year old girl's possesion by a demon she unwittingly conjures from a Ouija Board and refers to as "Captain Howdy". Her condition becomes such that doctors cannot find an explanation behind her sudden mood swings, bizarre sleepwalking acts (one example - standing before guests at her mother's party late at night in their home in her pyjamas, and telling an astronaut "You...

Excellent book

Advantages: excellent horror
Disadvantages: none

.... She makes animal noises and her behaviour continues to deteriorate……… Her speech can not be understood and many bizarre things happen in the book. The plots very good, and William Blatty style in writing this book is excellent. It’s a treat to read, descriptive imaginative, and horrific.. This is an excellent horror to read, it’s well written and will scare you....

Peter Kaye : volume 1?

Advantages: Funny family chap
Disadvantages: No celeb stuff

...The book, like the retro comic in question, is a simple and honest read. No long words or pretentious reasoning, just one man telling his story. They say you should only write what you know, and that is exactly what Peter has done here, quite literally! Everything he ever did, however mundane, seems to have ended up in this book, and for that reason alone I don?t think this will appeal to all, especially as he doesn?t include his rise to fame and celebrity, the reason why most people would spend a preposterous £18.95 on it, the autobiography abruptly coming to halt just as we get going. Maybe its part one of his autobiography. Who knows? Maybe he feels guilty about his fame and fortune and by telling more funny stories on his homely normal life is enough for the Jolly Bolton boy for now, working class guilt getting the better of him...

Review of The Sound of Laughter - Peter Kay

With friends like Peter's . . .

Advantages: Easy watching, some good acting and great vocal performances
Disadvantages: Acting from some of the cast is a bit over-the-top

...This is one of those films that nobody else seems to have heard of and - up until a few years ago - neither had I. Indeed, I have my passion for 1980s pop music to thank for my knowledge that this film even exists. For reasons I don't even remember, I came across a website listing the lyrics to Tears For Fears' mid-eighties hit Everybody Wants To Rule The World and whichever page I viewed mentioned a variety of films, TV programmes and albums that the song featured in. One of these was Peter's Friends . . . so I admit it, I first watched this film because one of my favourite songs was part of the soundtrack! (I can sometimes be a bit more shallow than other people believe . . . actually there are quite a few 1970s/1980s songs in here, which I think suits the mood of the film.) In a way, I find it surprising that Peter's Friends seems to...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Better than the Exorcist (honest)

Advantages: Just read it
Disadvantages: far to short

...When I read the exorcist i searched for more books by Blatty and couldn't find any. I came across this by luck in a second-hand bookshop. I think its still in print, but if it is it maybe hard to find. Difficulties on obtaining this product aside, its probably one of the best books i've read in a long time. Blatty is a great author. This book concerns a group of astronauts who are faining madness to avoid being sent to the moon. By accident they are sent Killer Kane in place of a real psychologist. Kane has to convince them to fly or to prove they are really mad. The beauty of the book is in the interaction between the leader of the astronauts and Kane. They play with each other, Kane trying to find some proof and the astronauts exploiting his ignorance of psychology. The book is a gripping tale, far to short to leave...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...
