Affectionately made Standards Record

Advantages: Willie's interpretations, subtle musicianship, great songs
Disadvantages: No Willie Nelson compositions

...Willie Nelson is a versatile performer. He was famous for being at the forefront of the country outlaw movement in the 70's. Released at the end of the 70's while the movement was at it's height, Nelson went against the grain with this risky offering of standards. This could have gone dreadfully for Willie but in fact what he achieved was one of his most successful and popular releases. The album is finely produced by Booker T. Jones of Booker T and the MGs. It's simply and beautifully done allowing Willie to take these songs and make them his own. It doesn't really fall into any category, as it's not really country, nor folk, nor Jazz, nor easy listening. Please excuse me for sounding utterly pretentious which I am about to do... It's Willie Nelson. The song selection is great with fantastic readings of 'Georgia on My Mind...

...Last week whilst I was doing my grocery shopping on the internet, I could feel a poking in my back and a little voice saying Mama. Holly had been looking through our DVD collection and had decided she had wanted to watch one. To my amazement she had picked out one of my favourite films of all time. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. This original version of the film was made in 1971 and starred Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. I was 5 when this film was made and can't ever remember seeing it at the cinema, so I would have first seen it on the television. It is loosely based on the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, that was first published in 1964. It is rumoured that Roald Dahl hated the film with a passion because it bears little resemblance to the book. Having read the book as well I tend to agree...

Welcome to the fun factory!

...I have just been watching the children's classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with my two daughters and we have all really enjoyed it. I had seen it years ago but had forgotten just waht a good film it is, and watching it as an adult has been just enjoyable. The film was made in 1971 and is based on the wonderful book by Roald Dahl. It tells the story of Charlie Buckett, a small boy who lives in almost penniless conditions in a rundown cottage with his mother and his four bedridden grandparents. He is a very uncomplaining boy and all of his family wish they could provide more for him. One day, everybody all over the world becomes very excited when Willy Wonka, who runs a big chocolate factory announces that he has placed five golden tickets in chocolate bars. ...I have an affinity with Willy Russell as he was born in the same hospital as me In Whiston !!! I also saw one of his earlier plays about the Beatles (John, Paul, George, Ringo and Bert) in The Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. It is hard to say which of his plays he is best known for - personally I would say 'Blood Brothers' but others may go for 'Educating Rita' or 'Shirley Valentine'. It is very hard to choose as all his work is full of his wonderful 'scouse' wit. Willis without the sweaty vest
