Wonderful Wiltshire
Advantages: Easy access to everything South West
Disadvantages: Not very close to the sea
...I have lived in Wiltshire most of my life. It is home to seven White horses and of course the well known Stone Henge. In addition to Stone Henge we have Avebury which is another Stone Phenomena as well as other attractions.
Parts of Wiltshire are situated close to the M4 corridor enabling easy access to London and Wales.
The county is bordered by Somerset, Dorset, Hamphire and Gloucestershire. There are many pretty towns in Wiltshire, Bradford-on-Avon, Malmesbury, Corsham, the city of Salisbury with it's beautiful catherdral and of course historic Lacock with it's Abbey. this has been a very popular venue for filming for period dramas such as Cranford.
From my little town, I have easy access to Bath and Bristol which are excellent for shopping and to experience stunning Georian Architecture. The Royal Circus in Bath is...

Wonderful Wiltshire!
Advantages: Beautiful scenery, fresh air, Stone Henge
Disadvantages: So much to see you won't have long enough to do it.
...and mystified as the generations of people who have been here before you.
It really is a fantastic effect - even if you've seen these things hundreds of times on TV, in books, whatever, when you actually get close to them it just hits you like you've never seen anything like it before.
I could go on all day, but I won't, cos this is supposed to be about Wiltshire and not just Stone Henge. You'd be mistaken if you thought that was the only thing in Wiltshire! I spent many happy holidays here when I was younger, and got to see just about everything in the county at one time or another.
Salisbury Plain is covered in strange lumps. There are quite a few near Stone Henge, you may be forgiven for thinking that a giant mole has been at work here, but no, these are the final resting places of the ancient kings and nobles of this land. But don't go...

Galloping across Wiltshire
Advantages: Fascinating addition to landscape. Interesting stories/fables behind their making. Reminder of special historical events.
Disadvantages: Regular maintenance and scouring needed to prevent them disappearing into the landscape
...Scattered throughout the south of England are some 57 hill figures. They?re also known as chalk carvings due to the fact that they?ve been cut into the hillside turf to expose the underlying chalk rock beneath. Of these 57 odd hill figures, Wiltshire seems to boast more hill figures than any other county in England, the most prolific of which being the white horse figures.
My father often had sales calls to make in Wiltshire when I was a child, and I?d often go along for the ride just for the scenery. What with Silbury Hill, the mysterious stones at Avebury and Long Barrow (not to mention Stonehenge not so far away), Wiltshire is steeped in history. However, the thing that fascinated me most as a child were the chalk carvings in the hills throughout the county.
The most famous of chalk carving of all is the White Horse...

Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire
Advantages: Great Historic Day Out
Disadvantages: None
...Despite having lived in Wiltshire all my life, I have never visted Lack Abbey itself. I have been to the 13th century village of Lacock many times and visted craft fares and recently took part in the Scarecrow Trail, which was great fun, and in the past even spent the odd evening out having a meal in one of the local Public Houses.
This year as we were holidaying at home, we joined the National Trust as a family for £61.50, received our pack and car parking pass and decided to explore, locally, places we had never been before.
The first advantage was that the car parking was free and we made our way to the Abbey entrance and showed our memebership cards for free admittance. I belive a typical entry free for 2 adults and 2 children would be around £26.50.
The abbey was founded in 1232 and used to be a nunnery before...

The Beauty Of Wiltshires White horses
Advantages: All of these sites are steeped in history
Disadvantages: None at all
...There are a grand total of thirteen White chalk horses embedded in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside.
Before we go on to take a closer look at each of the White horses maybe I will tell you just why I love them so much.
When our children were young the Westbury White Horse was a very popular weekend visiting place, you could bundle the kids into the car, pack a picnic, have just enough petrol in the tank to get there and back and still be sure that it was going to be a good afternoon out. The entrance to the Westbury white horse is via a long, narrow and windy road. But the road does have a number of `passing points`. As the car reaches the brow of the hill there is grass as far as the eye can see.
The Westbury White Horse was then the equivalent of a modern indoor play centre but it was filled with fresh air and cost little...

Have Some Faith In Lacock Abbey
Advantages: A good day out
Disadvantages: None
...Lacock Abbey is situated in water meadows beside the River Avon in the 13th century village of Lacock in Wiltshire. Many years ago the village played a large part in the wool trade, it was alive and thriving and had three farms, carpenters, wheelwrights, a brewery plus several pubs, a mill of its own and a busy weekly market.
Today Lacock village is still prosperous but in a very different way, it is rich in tourism and it is easy to see why.
Lacock today has just a handful of shops and pubs but the tourists are spellbound by what Lacock has to offer. A high percentage of the original honey coloured Cotswold stone buildings are still in tact, these include a 14th century Tithe barn, a 15th century weavers house, a medieval church and a pack horse bridge.
As you make your way into Lacock village it is like stepping back in time, there...

Pewsey! My village!
Advantages: Lots of shops and facilities, CARNIVAL!!
Disadvantages: Nothing!
...Pewsey is situated in south Wiltshire and is one of the biggest villages. It has around 5000 residents. It has become a great place to live as there is a fast route to Paddington Station by train.
HISTORY
Pewsey was once owned by a Saxon king, King Alfred, and in the centre of Pewsey there is a statue of King Alfred now, it was built in June 1913. King Alfred was crowned King of Wessex in 870 CE it has been said that he went off to war and left his wife in the care of the people of Pewsey. When he returned, he granted the people Pewsey the right to have an annual feast. This feast was called the Feaste Ball that was held every other year, and now is part of the modern day Pewsey Carnival - held for two weeks in September and originally designed to raise funds for Savernake Hospital. Pewsey in the Saxon ages was believed to be...

Hey Jamie Oliver! - I Am Trying To Buy British!!
Advantages: Farmed in Britain - a quality product - worth paying a bit more for.
Disadvantages: Too much packaging, as with all products of this type
... Tesco Finest Wafer Thin Wiltshire Cured Ham 115g
***What's it like***
Having watched the recent Jamie Oliver programme about pork in this country, I knew that I would have to change my shopping habits. You would have had to have been very hard hearted not to feel sympathy, with regards to how pigs are cared for on farms in general.
Rules and regulations with regard to the conditions these animals are due to change, I think in 2012 - however our farmers have complied earlier and have put most requirements into force now. This puts farmers in this country at a disadvantage with our European neighbours, as keeping pigs in squalid conditions, equals larger profits.
I therefore went in search of some ham that has been not just packed, but farmed in this country, to support British farmers. I chose this ham, because my...

Ska-Punk Wiltshire Stylee; Part I
Advantages: it's honest
Disadvantages: wasn't enough for the band to make it...
...industry lurches from one disaster to another and we enter the digital age of music, it feels like there's no place for us anymore, like we've been squeezed out. No one wants to hear from bands like us anymore, honest, real bands and personally I think music will be the worse for it."
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
For every Coldplay and Keane, there's a Whitmore. For every two bands that make it, there's one that doesn't; in fact, there's hundreds that don't. The above statement from the members of Whitmore show's just how hard it is to put to bed the thing you love doing, the thing you've given everything toward, all because you're to honest. Hailing from Wiltshire UK, Whitmore and their brand of Ska (blending punk, reggae and rock) entertained thousands, selling out venue upon venue, gaining...

My family and other animals (and fish)
Advantages: Fantastic food at very good prices; very accommodating
Disadvantages: Nothing for the vegetarians; sofa-hogging fellow-diners
...'ll advise them to wait for the cartilage in her knee and his broken ankle to mend first.
My sister picked the The George Hotel at Codford St Peter because she lives just up the road. Apparently it won a 'Best Restaurant in Wiltshire' award earlier this year. We went weekend before last for Sunday lunch.
Introducing the family
******************
** My Mum
She's a lovely little lady who's always been adventurous with what she's willing to eat. I can't think of anything - other than bananas - that she doesn't like. The banana-dislike I put down to her being a 'war baby' and not tasting one until 1946 when my Grandfather brought a bunch back from the War (Nope, the date isn't a mistake, he was in Burma and it took him a long time to get back). I don't think she ever got over the disappointment of that first banana.
** My Step-father
