Wonderful Wiltshire

Advantages: Easy access to everything South West
Disadvantages: Not very close to the sea

...I have lived in Wiltshire most of my life. It is home to seven White horses and of course the well known Stone Henge. In addition to Stone Henge we have Avebury which is another Stone Phenomena as well as other attractions. Parts of Wiltshire are situated close to the M4 corridor enabling easy access to London and Wales. The county is bordered by Somerset, Dorset, Hamphire and Gloucestershire. There are many pretty towns in Wiltshire, Bradford-on-Avon, Malmesbury, Corsham, the city of Salisbury with it's beautiful catherdral and of course historic Lacock with it's Abbey. this has been a very popular venue for filming for period dramas such as Cranford. From my little town, I have easy access to Bath and Bristol which are excellent for shopping and to experience stunning Georian Architecture. The Royal Circus in Bath is...

Review of Wiltshire

Wonderful Wiltshire!

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, fresh air, Stone Henge
Disadvantages: So much to see you won't have long enough to do it.

...and mystified as the generations of people who have been here before you. It really is a fantastic effect - even if you've seen these things hundreds of times on TV, in books, whatever, when you actually get close to them it just hits you like you've never seen anything like it before. I could go on all day, but I won't, cos this is supposed to be about Wiltshire and not just Stone Henge. You'd be mistaken if you thought that was the only thing in Wiltshire! I spent many happy holidays here when I was younger, and got to see just about everything in the county at one time or another. Salisbury Plain is covered in strange lumps. There are quite a few near Stone Henge, you may be forgiven for thinking that a giant mole has been at work here, but no, these are the final resting places of the ancient kings and nobles of this land. But don't go...

Galloping across Wiltshire

Advantages: Fascinating addition to landscape. Interesting stories/fables behind their making. Reminder of special historical events.
Disadvantages: Regular maintenance and scouring needed to prevent them disappearing into the landscape

...Scattered throughout the south of England are some 57 hill figures. They?re also known as chalk carvings due to the fact that they?ve been cut into the hillside turf to expose the underlying chalk rock beneath. Of these 57 odd hill figures, Wiltshire seems to boast more hill figures than any other county in England, the most prolific of which being the white horse figures. My father often had sales calls to make in Wiltshire when I was a child, and I?d often go along for the ride just for the scenery. What with Silbury Hill, the mysterious stones at Avebury and Long Barrow (not to mention Stonehenge not so far away), Wiltshire is steeped in history. However, the thing that fascinated me most as a child were the chalk carvings in the hills throughout the county. The most famous of chalk carving of all is the White Horse...

Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire

Advantages: Great Historic Day Out
Disadvantages: None

...Despite having lived in Wiltshire all my life, I have never visted Lack Abbey itself. I have been to the 13th century village of Lacock many times and visted craft fares and recently took part in the Scarecrow Trail, which was great fun, and in the past even spent the odd evening out having a meal in one of the local Public Houses. This year as we were holidaying at home, we joined the National Trust as a family for £61.50, received our pack and car parking pass and decided to explore, locally, places we had never been before. The first advantage was that the car parking was free and we made our way to the Abbey entrance and showed our memebership cards for free admittance. I belive a typical entry free for 2 adults and 2 children would be around £26.50. The abbey was founded in 1232 and used to be a nunnery before...

The Beauty Of Wiltshires White horses

Advantages: All of these sites are steeped in history
Disadvantages: None at all

...There are a grand total of thirteen White chalk horses embedded in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside. Before we go on to take a closer look at each of the White horses maybe I will tell you just why I love them so much. When our children were young the Westbury White Horse was a very popular weekend visiting place, you could bundle the kids into the car, pack a picnic, have just enough petrol in the tank to get there and back and still be sure that it was going to be a good afternoon out. The entrance to the Westbury white horse is via a long, narrow and windy road. But the road does have a number of `passing points`. As the car reaches the brow of the hill there is grass as far as the eye can see. The Westbury White Horse was then the equivalent of a modern indoor play centre but it was filled with fresh air and cost little...

mediauk.com

Advantages: A decent media website...
Disadvantages: ...but no better than that

...Anyone looking for a job in the media, or even an insight into the big wide world of it, could do much worse than look here to begin with - mediauk.com. Operating since 1994, it lists current available jobs in radio, tv and print media, recent news articles on all these forms of media and a discussion board. Now being a graduate in a degree of this field of work, the jobs board has been an interest to me for quite a while...but don't expect to find work instantly. Anything but. Copious numbers of people view these adverts (you can see how many exactly in the job listings), but don't let that deter you of course - if you're good and experienced enough then you'll come across the job for you eventually. The jobs listed usually just contain a small job description and contact details for where to send your cover letter and CV, but...

dictionary.com

Advantages: Good free service
Disadvantages: Too many adverts & pop-ups

...Dictionary.com?! Dictionary.com?! Seriously?! Why, yes, something that seems so simply and basic has it's place on the World Wide Web (yes, I'm aware of the irony!), but fear not...it's not as basic as it seems! Rather than just typing in a word to discover its definition, dictionary.com does provide a far greater service. Since it's launch way back in 1995 (were websites even around then?!), it's one of the world's most popular services, as naturally many people will just type in 'dictionary.com' into their browser if they need to find the definition of a word...even if they don't know the website exists, it makes sense to have a crack at it! The website does provide a thesaurus option, translator and encyclopaedia...for anyone even contemplating steering away from Wikipedia, God forbid! But there are other quirks to the website...

gumtree.com

Advantages: Very detailed
Disadvantages: Open to fraud

...Many will remember a time when the classified section of a local newspaper was all there was if you wanted to look for second-hand goods, or look for a place to live without going to an estate agent?but not anymore. Goodbye the classified section; hello Gumtree.com To quote the frontpage of the website, Gumtree advertises ?Homes, jobs, cars, sofas, vintage records? anything, really??and they?re not wrong! It lists it?s good in cities across the country. And not just the capital cities of the UK, but anywhere from Brighton to Nottingham, from Oxford to Aberdeen. This handy tool can help you look for exactly what you?re after without having to sift through adverts from cities hundreds of miles from you. Now, to indicate the scale of the website, in the London section, the ?Flats and Houses? adverts totals 124,174!! That seems a bit...

TVCatchup.com

Advantages: Great website to watch TV on, for free
Disadvantages: None

...The television - the bane of most people's lives, spent whiling away the hours whilst sat in front of it when you could be doing things more productive. Then the Internet came along as a pretender to the thrown...but never would the picture box be knocked off it's perch, so the internet did the next best thing - broadcast the television on the internet. This is where TVCatchup comes in. Now, first off it's important to note that this website differs from, say, the BBC iPlayer because it is not a 'catch-up' service, or is it similar to YouTube by having readily available any old rubbish. No, this is quite literally television on the computer. The web address is simple - www.tvcatchup.com - and the idea is just as so. It streams the channels you can enjoy on a standard Freeview box via your computer screen, completely free...
