Wonderful Wiltshire
Advantages: Easy access to everything South West
Disadvantages: Not very close to the sea
...I have lived in Wiltshire most of my life. It is home to seven White horses and of course the well known Stone Henge. In addition to Stone Henge we have Avebury which is another Stone Phenomena as well as other attractions.
Parts of Wiltshire are situated close to the M4 corridor enabling easy access to London and Wales.
The county is bordered by Somerset, Dorset, Hamphire and Gloucestershire. There are many pretty towns in Wiltshire, Bradford-on-Avon, Malmesbury, Corsham, the city of Salisbury with it's beautiful catherdral and of course historic Lacock with it's Abbey. this has been a very popular venue for filming for period dramas such as Cranford.
From my little town, I have easy access to Bath and Bristol which are excellent for shopping and to experience stunning Georian Architecture. The Royal Circus in Bath is...

Wonderful Wiltshire!
Advantages: Beautiful scenery, fresh air, Stone Henge
Disadvantages: So much to see you won't have long enough to do it.
...and mystified as the generations of people who have been here before you.
It really is a fantastic effect - even if you've seen these things hundreds of times on TV, in books, whatever, when you actually get close to them it just hits you like you've never seen anything like it before.
I could go on all day, but I won't, cos this is supposed to be about Wiltshire and not just Stone Henge. You'd be mistaken if you thought that was the only thing in Wiltshire! I spent many happy holidays here when I was younger, and got to see just about everything in the county at one time or another.
Salisbury Plain is covered in strange lumps. There are quite a few near Stone Henge, you may be forgiven for thinking that a giant mole has been at work here, but no, these are the final resting places of the ancient kings and nobles of this land. But don't go...

The Beauty Of Wiltshires White horses
Advantages: All of these sites are steeped in history
Disadvantages: None at all
...horse.
The white horse looks out over the Pewsey Vale and can be seen for miles around. The Alton Barnes White horse directly faces the new Pewsey White Horse.
In 1812 Mr Robert Pile, who lived at the local farm paid Twenty pounds to John Thorne to design and cut out the horse. On reflection Twenty pounds was a considerable amount of money in the 1800`s but the work didn't go according to plan. John Thorne decided to design the horse himself and then draught in workers to excavate the shape of the horse. To cut a long story short Mr Thorne then decided to do a moonlight flit taking the Twenty pounds with him! Robert Pile had to pay out again and some time later John Thorne was hanged, but no one seems to know if he was hung because of the theft.
The horse at Alton Barnes has been fairly well looked after , the Wiltshire Crop Circles...

Galloping across Wiltshire
Advantages: Fascinating addition to landscape. Interesting stories/fables behind their making. Reminder of special historical events.
Disadvantages: Regular maintenance and scouring needed to prevent them disappearing into the landscape
...Scattered throughout the south of England are some 57 hill figures. They?re also known as chalk carvings due to the fact that they?ve been cut into the hillside turf to expose the underlying chalk rock beneath. Of these 57 odd hill figures, Wiltshire seems to boast more hill figures than any other county in England, the most prolific of which being the white horse figures.
My father often had sales calls to make in Wiltshire when I was a child, and I?d often go along for the ride just for the scenery. What with Silbury Hill, the mysterious stones at Avebury and Long Barrow (not to mention Stonehenge not so far away), Wiltshire is steeped in history. However, the thing that fascinated me most as a child were the chalk carvings in the hills throughout the county.
The most famous of chalk carving of all is the White Horse...

Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire
Advantages: Great Historic Day Out
Disadvantages: None
...Despite having lived in Wiltshire all my life, I have never visted Lack Abbey itself. I have been to the 13th century village of Lacock many times and visted craft fares and recently took part in the Scarecrow Trail, which was great fun, and in the past even spent the odd evening out having a meal in one of the local Public Houses.
This year as we were holidaying at home, we joined the National Trust as a family for £61.50, received our pack and car parking pass and decided to explore, locally, places we had never been before.
The first advantage was that the car parking was free and we made our way to the Abbey entrance and showed our memebership cards for free admittance. I belive a typical entry free for 2 adults and 2 children would be around £26.50.
The abbey was founded in 1232 and used to be a nunnery before...

On the farm
Advantages: Good time piece models
Disadvantages: none
...This farming family 40954 made by Britain's has been around for several years I have played with it in several different play venues.
Britain's makes authentically detailed farm equipment models scale 1:32 There are tractors combiners and other vehicles plus animals for the farm. So to tend the animals, drive the vehicles we need some people. The people in this farm family group are about 5cms tall .Recommended for over 3 year olds.
This farm family mum, dad, girl and dog are dressed ready to work on the farm. They look a bit old fashioned really. They all stand on a base of brown mud plastic and all wear green wellies (except the dog who is not standing on mud but on his 4 legs.)
. Farmer dad has brown trousers and jacket and wears a trilby hat. One hand is on his hip he is carrying a stick in the other.
Mum sports a hat on her...

A wooden farm.
Advantages: Good play opportunities
Disadvantages: the 2 d animals
...I have played with this farm (alongside a child) at a play centre and would like to tell you about it.
.
This farm is a wooden farm it comes with a thin wooden plywood base that is painted green to represent grass and has a blue area to represent water painted on in one of the
corners. A few flowers are also painted on the green board as well as a path of stepping stones.
.
There are some farm buildings. The buildings are natural wood coloured with red roofs. There is a dog kennel, a windmill the sails do rotate. An open fronted wooden building with a few shelves this is stabling for the horses or shelter for the cows the chickens can roost on the shelves. Then a wooden building for the pig sty, perhaps as they do just fit inside it.
.
The essential feature of the farm is the animal,s I will admit The farm I played...

Chapel Farm
Advantages: a nice break
Disadvantages: British weather
...I fancied going away for the weekend but didn't want to go far or spend a fortune, I didn't even want to spend £100 a night for a basic hotel so I searched for guest houses in the lake district as we don't live far from there and the countryside is lovely. I couldn't find any vacancies so I suggested a caravan to my husband, he agreed as we both think it's great for children to be outside and they love it. I search the Hoseasons website and we decided to go on Friday after school and work etc and stay until Monday as the children were off school then.
We wanted a fairly basic site as we were going to take games to play at night and the netball post and maybe the swingball. After looking I came across Chapel Farm Caravan Park in Little Asby. The Hoseasons site had a caravan available for 3 nights at a cost of £165, fairly cheap...

Flat animals for a toy farm
Advantages: Last well
Disadvantages: flat bodies
...I often play alongside children with these pin toy animals and other animals on a toy farm. I think a toy farm is an excellent toy for children.
Included in this set of farm animals from Pintoy are 2 cows, 2 pigs. 2 lambs, 2 ducks and 2 chickens. These little animals are made of Rubber wood which is harvested from a replenishable forest.
These animals are fair representative shapes of real animals but not as good as some other the animals that I have seen . The cows for example have a thick rectangular flat sided body the head is rounded though. The other animals although not really realistic you can tell what they are. The shapes of these animals are chunky easy to hold and play with. They all have eyes, noses, or beaks and smiling mouths look friendly. These animals are all coloured the colours you might expect those...

Advantages: Great photos, educational for young children.

There are three flaps to lift.
* Favourite Foods
On this double page spread we are told that sheep like to eat grass, pigs eat porridge, horses eat hay, goats eat leaves and chickens eat seed. There are also three flaps to lift.
