WG602 54 Mbps Wireless Access Point
Advantages: Good features, repeater and bridging modes
Disadvantages: Minor installation problem
...Here's the story. I have an existing wireless network. The access point is in the office in the loft. I have a laptop I wander around with (as you do) and there is a PC on the ground floor. On a good day with a strong wind, the downstairs PC gets a weak to medium connection. All too often though it is intermittent or fails completely. Web browsing is quirky and the whole experience is less than satisfactory. The bottom line is that despite being well within the theoretical range for wireless devices, there are just too many walls, floors and sundry other obstacles getting in the way.
There are several things you can do do improve the signal but most are more suited to open spaces. One option that would help in this situation is to use a pair of access points in repeater mode. After a quick look around, Netgear's WG602 looked like...

My Sitecom 11M WL-013 - Wireless Access Point
Advantages: Very small - Good connection and signal - doesn't overheat - does the job
Disadvantages: Not sure how well it works with PCI wireless PC card
...My experience of this product is that it works quite well the reason why it doesn't go from good to excellent will be explained bellow.
I have 2 PC's and 1 laptop I wanted the main PC to be hard-wired as that one is right next to the access hub and modem so no need to be wireless and anyway the main machine should always be hard-wired as no wireless can beat that.
Then I have my son's laptop a Dell Inspiron 2200 which has already a wireless network card, and this machine runs perfect via the wireless access point anywhere in the house, and my house is a 3 storey house so plenty of range.
However I did install a wireless PCI network card on the PC on 3rd level of the house and this connection was intermittent which meant going back to hard-wire there, now I cannot say for sure if this was a card problem or the access point problem or even...

3Com OfficeConnect Wireless 11g Access Point
Advantages: Bargain bundle with wireless card for my laptop
Disadvantages: Just an access point, no modem/hub/etc
...I use the 3Com OfficeConnect Wireless 11g Access Point in my home wireless network, and bought it as part of a bundle with a laptop wireless card - check my other reviews to see if I've got round to reviewing that too...
It used the IEEE 802.11g standard (data transfer speeds of up to 54Mbps), plus is backwards compatible with IEEE 802.11b (upto 11Mbps) so works with older equipment (such as a slightly outdated laptop from a previous employer) with no problems.
The included CD installed all the necessary drivers very quickly and also contains all the manuals in PDF format. Once the drivers were installed, the configuration wizard runs in a standard web browser. This involves configuring IP addresses, encryption settings, DHCP settings and other techy bits and bobs. This was pretty straightforward, although a basic knowledge...

generally a good access point
Advantages: easy to set up, good range.
Disadvantages: a bit sensitive
...I bought one of these access points for work because of the two aerial functionality. These aerials work in one of two ways, either diversity where they both send and recieve and can tell which aerial has the best signal to you and uses that, and simplex where one aerial sends and one receives and one sends and you have to have a good signal on both for the system to work.
the diversity system makes it more flexible and we have a larger aerial on an extension on one of the RP TNC aerial connectors, this covers our manufacturing area, and one standard aerial which covers our office space. this works well and extends the range and thus the value for money of this unit.
the advantage however using the aerials simplex is that in situations like an office with a good signal to both aerials one sending and one receiving cuts down...

The Wonder of Wireless
Advantages: allows wireless access to existing networks
Disadvantages: Must be careful to turn on the security
...It was time for me to extend my home network, I have a fixed wire RJ45 network at home, and this worked well, giving transfer speeds up to 100 Mbps and access to our Cable modem for internet access.
Whilst talking about speed, it should be remembered that although the wired portion of the network is capable of 100Mbps Mega Bits per second) the wireless section is running at 11 Mbps. This is great for internet access, where even the best service only operates at 8-10 Mbps, so if you are using your home network purely for internet access, wireless is all you need. The problem comes if you want to view large files, such as video footage from another PC on the network, it is probably worth plugging in a cable.
I didn't want to rely on the wireless access so having a fixed router and a Wireless Access Point (WAP) seemed to me to be...

Freedom of Wireless
Advantages: Fast, Easy Setup
Disadvantages: Technology beginning to become outdated
...Belkin currently lead the market in network devices, both wired and wireless and when I came to introducing a wireless network in to my home, I turned straight to Belkin as I was sure they'd offer me the best performance - I haven't been disappointed.
**Features**
The Belkin 802.11g Access Point can be configured as a Wireless Range Extender. This allows you to use your existing network featuring a Belkin Wireless Access Point and extend the range of your network. This is ideal for large buildings or areas where coverage breaks up.
Alone, the Belkin 802.11g Access Point boasts a range of up to 300 feet radius indoors, and 1,500 feet radius outdoors. This is obviously with good conditions, so when buying you should take in to account walls and any interference such as cordless telephones and similar devices.

Extend your Range
Advantages: Easy to install and use
Disadvantages: no major disadvantages found
...of the building)
The first of the two upstairs computers connected straight away, I had installed Belkin USB Wireless G Network Adaptors in each PC, but the signal strngth was low and connection kept dropping. The situation was even worse in the second bedroom as the PC refused to connect at all and a signal could not be detected.
After some research I decided to install a Belkin Wireless G Universal Range Extender/Access Point - I had not previously tried out this product but the specification looked good and the features were exactly what I was looking for - according to the manufacturer...
'The Wireless G Universal Range Extender increases the coverage of your existing wireless network by retransmitting an 802.11b/g signal across a wider coverage area. Designed for easy setup operation, it works seamlessly with most routers and access...

The WAP is dead, long live the WAP
Advantages: Fast, easy to configure, reasonable price for a Wireless Access Point
Disadvantages: slight snag in set up. Easily resolved
...My dearly beloved Linksys WAP11b passed on this week. At the request of the family there were no flowers but a small celebration was held to remember a long and hard working life and the opportunity to get a new one.
Including VAT and delivery, for £48.15 , Novatech.co.uk sent me one of these little charmers.
Let me explain my home setup:
The ADSL line starts at my phone line and passes through a Linksys ADSL ethernet modem. This is connected to a seperate router which has four ports in it.
Two of those ports are used by the CAT5 structured cable network, connecting the two desktop computers to each other and the internet. one of the ports is spare and the other hosts the Wireless Access Point, or WAP. Doing this separately was deliberate, the failure of a single component will not prevent...

D-Link Access Point Review
Advantages: Wireless
Disadvantages: No WDS
...Had one for home use, not particularly amazed by the amount of features it has. Firstly, there is no WDS system on it, which I did not realise until after i had bought it. It was originally to wirelessly link my computer downstairs to my two upstairs, which ran through an Ethernet switch. In the end, I had that many problems with it, i bought a long Ethernet cable to link them. It's not a bad piece of kit, it's just a bit of a let down. Eventually, I bought a TalkTalk ADSL router, so now the AP sits looking lonely on my computer shelf. It does have some good features on it, but to be honest I personally think it's a lot of trouble. Also, it does churn up problems linking to older switches. If you are looking for a simple bit of kit that will make your network wireless and nothing else, this is great. But if you want something that works...
