...The Netgear DG834PN is the latest version of the DG834 and combines an ADSL modem with a wireless router and 4 port switch. In plain English, this plugs in your phone socket and allows one or more PCs to share the connection via either a wired or wireless link. The modem part is ADSL2+ ready and should work with even the fastest ISP offerings out there which as at Dec 2006 are around 12mbps in the UK. The setup wizard worked flawlessly and apart from the username and password, worked everything else out for itself and had the DG834PN up and running in a couple of minutes. As with most similar devices, further configuration is done via a web interface. The wireless section supports 802.11b and 802.11g as well as Netgear's own 802.11 Super G variant offering 108Mbps. It cost me £85 from PC World, but can probably be found for a bit less if you shop online. The Cable version costs a little less. Buffalo WBMR-G54 wireless router - a real buffalo?

...I bought this router from a local Argos shop at an emergency situation i.e. I want it now and therefore not at the best price - 49.99. Reason: My all singing and all dancing Dynamode R-ADSL-C4W-EG - wireless router had lost its main function, 'internet connectivity' after a month or so of continuous use (see my other review, now updated, for details). All is left is wireless communication i.e. useless. The return of this router back to Amazon caused me a week (lots of emails + recorded delivery + check that the refund includes the recorded delivery etc) For Argos, there is an obvious advantage - if there is something wrong with it, I just take it back for a refund/replacement on the same day. Installation of the router is pretty straight-forward from the provided CD and you follow it's easy setup guide. This takes you through the configuration of the whole router starting first with it's SSID name, it's WEP WPA security settings and your internet connection details...etc.. I like the fact that this is all done for you with the easy setup wizard. As soon as you have internet connection, the routers firewall automatically protects you from the internet nasties but you may wish to have a software firewall enabled as a security backup, for this I enabled the Windows XP firewall which works flawlessly with the router.
