WG602 54 Mbps Wireless Access Point

Advantages: Good features, repeater and bridging modes
Disadvantages: Minor installation problem

...Here's the story. I have an existing wireless network. The access point is in the office in the loft. I have a laptop I wander around with (as you do) and there is a PC on the ground floor. On a good day with a strong wind, the downstairs PC gets a weak to medium connection. All too often though it is intermittent or fails completely. Web browsing is quirky and the whole experience is less than satisfactory. The bottom line is that despite being well within the theoretical range for wireless devices, there are just too many walls, floors and sundry other obstacles getting in the way. There are several things you can do do improve the signal but most are more suited to open spaces. One option that would help in this situation is to use a pair of access points in repeater mode. After a quick look around, Netgear's WG602 looked like...

Netgear WGR614 54 Mbps Wireless Router

Advantages: Easy setup, great customer support, good price
Disadvantages: None

...In short: Excellent router, easy to set up and good support from Netgear. I bought this modem router from Ebay to set up a wireless home network. Depsite paying AOL money each month and seeing new customers getting this router for free we were told that we would still have to purchase it separately. As this was one of the AOL compatible routers I plumped for it due to Netgear's good name. The router was installed easyily and using AOL software from their site my main computer was up and running using an ethernet cable. We did have a couple of problems setting up our two laptops to work wirelessly but one short call to Netgear and that was all sorted out. If you don't have laptops with built in wireless capability I would recommend getting the compatible wireless adapters from Netgear, these also are installed very easily. Even...

Review of NETGEAR WGR614 54 Mbps Wireless Router - wireless router

Wireless Usb 54Mbps G Compact

Advantages: Plug and play, easy to use.
Disadvantages: It is external, meaning not inside your computer.

...This product is very reliable great for people on the go, or even at home. Good office use and offers speeds that will satisfy anyones needs. There is only one inconvenience though, the fact that it is external. Since it is external there is always a better chance of it breaking, or being lost. Linksys is the leading networking brand and is very reliable, and there when you need it. The software provided gives you an easy to use network monitor which gives you the option to connect to what network you wish, save the network as a profile, and show the best link connection/speed. It has support for USB 2.0 and also USB 1.1 so it will work great on older computers. It is compatible with Windows 98SE, 2000, ME, XP, and also Vista. It has two wireless network modes 802.11g and 802.11b and is also compatible with 128-bit encryption....

Review of Linksys Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter WUSB54GC

The web, wirelessly.

Advantages: All-in-one package, ease of use, advanced features.
Disadvantages: Price

...expensive wireless technology, and my research around the internet led me to the Netgear 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Firewall Router (with 4 port switch). Phew, what a mouthful, eh? This set up would mean that the PC beside the phone point would be physically connected to the router whilst the PC at the top of the house would be connected wirelessly which solves all my problems! I can hear you all running away in terror at the horrible jargon, so stop! Return! I shall try to explain to you what this is all about. I suppose the best place to start is the ADSL part. You probably know ADSL better as Broadband. Broadband is a fast internet connection (depending on the speed of the most common broadband connections it can be between 4 and 10 times faster than your ordinary modem connection). ADSL is generally associated with BT telephone lines. If you...

Buffalo WBMR-G54 wireless router - a real buffalo?

Advantages: Reasonable price, easy to use, lots of advanced settings
Disadvantages: installation firewall issue, signal strengh only reasonable

...I bought this router from a local Argos shop at an emergency situation i.e. I want it now and therefore not at the best price - 49.99. Reason: My all singing and all dancing Dynamode R-ADSL-C4W-EG - wireless router had lost its main function, 'internet connectivity' after a month or so of continuous use (see my other review, now updated, for details). All is left is wireless communication i.e. useless. The return of this router back to Amazon caused me a week (lots of emails + recorded delivery + check that the refund includes the recorded delivery etc) For Argos, there is an obvious advantage - if there is something wrong with it, I just take it back for a refund/replacement on the same day. This router comes with detail instructions (step-by-step) for installation however it does not cater for the presence of a firewall...

Review of Buffalo AirStation Wireless-G Broadband ADSL2+ Modem Router WBMR-G54 - wireless router

Excellent wireless router

Advantages: easy setup, works great
Disadvantages: None

...I had recently bought a second laptop for my wife and needed a wireless router badly so that both of us could access internet simultaneously and wirelessly. So i searched around for a decent reliable router. i came across this one and bought it from amazon for 30 quid. It supports 802.11b and 802.11g. It has 4 wired ports so that 4 computers can be connected simultaneously. It doesnt have a USB port. Setup : it came with the setup CD and it took around 15 - 20 mins. since it involves computer restart. I have a Virgin broadband connection so had to connect this router to the modem supplied by virgin. A ethernet wire is provided with this kit. Had no problems at all with the setup. The installation needs to be done with the computer wired to the router. Also configured the router settings after logging into the router...

Review of NETGEAR WGR614 54 Mbps Wireless Router - wireless router

Great Multimedia Wireless Router from Belkin

Advantages: Reliable, Fast, Easy to configure, Lots of features, USB for sharing drives
Disadvantages: Bit expensive, Not full speed with every machine

...INTRO The Belkin N+ router is one of the higher end (consumer) wireless modem router offerings from Belkin. It cost me £85 from PC World, but can probably be found for a bit less if you shop online. The Cable version costs a little less. Reason I bought this one was because two PCs in the house with wireless cards kept losing the wireless connection when I was using a Linksys router (my own PCs / laptops were fine though!). I replaced that with a second hand Belkin, which worked fine but unfortunately, a power cut killed the wireless on it. Liking the performance of that cheaper Belkin router, I decided to stick with Belkin and get this one! DESIGN The router looks very stylish and stands up tall rather than laid down flat. It doesn't appear to have been designed to be laid down flat like many other routers, which may be to...

Review of Belkin N+ Wireless Modem Router - wireless router

Share your printer wirelessly

Advantages: Nice looking, good selection of features
Disadvantages: Can be tricky to set up, no support for bi-directional printers

...The WGPS606 is an unusual combination of a bridge with a four port switch plus a wireless print server. What does that do for you? Good question! Most people would want this for its wireless print function, more on that later. The WGPS606's other feature is that it can act as a bridge allowing you to add wireless connections to an existing wired network. It also sports 4 network ports for adding more wired devices to it. On the wireless side it supports both 802.11b and 802.11g as well as the proprietry Netgear RangeMax standard. It also copes fine with both WEP and WPA-PSK encryption, the latter being more secure and should be used if at all possible. The device's main selling point though is its ability to let PCs communicate with a printer wirelessly. The device has 2 USB ports allowing you to connect and use two different...

Review of NETGEAR WGPS606 54 Mbps Wireless Print Server with 4-Port Switch - bridge

Wireless ready!

Advantages: Plug-and-Play
Disadvantages: Pricey!

...Having tried to connect my 360 via ethernet to my wireless connection, through my Mac or my Windows laptop, and having no success, this provided the only feasible solution. Unfortunately, unlike the PS3, the Xbox 360 is not wireless-ready out of the box, and in order to make it so, you must invest a further £50+, which is quite a pain in the rear. Unfortunately, it seems that, in making the console itself so cheap and appealing, Microsoft aim (as always) to make their money on the peripherals, which everybody needs for the full gaming experience. Nevertheless, this does exactly what it says on the box (sorry to be cliched). Plug-and-Play, as expected, you connect it to your console and through your dashboard, search for your wireless connection and, with your WEP key or security key at hand, you can instantly connect to your...

Review of Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter Network adapter

The most cost effective router "routed out"

Advantages: Affordable and reliable
Disadvantages: Difficult to set up

...for setting up a wireless network, as it allows the router to send information from your modem to the computer you are trying to get internet on. Most modern laptops have a wireless network card built in, and so do not need one of these. Desktops however will usually need a dongle. Argos listed the specifications as follows: * Starter kit including a wireless 54Mbps cable router and USB adapter. * Speed 54Mbps. * Range 100m (speed and range indication will vary due to environmental and other factors). * Built-in firewall. * WEP and WPA security built-in. * 1 external antenna. * Compatible with 802.11b/g wireless standards. * 4 Ethernet ports. * Includes SmartWizard installation software. * Compatible with: Windows 98/ME/NT2000/XP, Mac OS, NetWare, UNIX or Linux, Internet Explorer 5.0 or Netscape 4.7 or higher...
