Yep, you budget networking buddies have supplied you with this great innovation. the ability to share your single broadband cable/dsl connection with up to 4 computers in the vicinity. ...Why did I choose it? I'd had a broadband connection for quite some time and used a free modem that came from my ISP. There had never been any problems with the free modem, but it only allowed one computer to connect through it. We had bought a cheap second computer and wanted to be able to share files, printers, and most importantly the broadband connection. I was attracted to the D-Link DSL-904 as it was advertised as a "Wireless ADSL Router Kit". Since installation, I have gained quite a bit of knowledge on the technologies involved, but at the time of purchase, non of the other information available meant anything to me! ...though they kept saying, "it's up to you mate, but we can put it downstairs and you can use a wireless router." That, I thought, would have meant opening my brand new computer and putting in a wireless PCI card. No way was I prepared to do that. I wanted my new machine to be wired and my wife's to connect wirelessly, so with a few sighs they set about installing the cable where I wanted it. After considerable furniture shifting in our bedroom so that the cable could be routed through it (no pun intended), we had our first connection and got it working. The very next day - I'm a glutton for punishment - we went out to look at some routers. Advantages: Pick up a bargain ?

...Another review from me for a discontinued item, but may be useful if you're loking to pick up a bargain item on ebay... The D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router has a built-in ADSL modem - plugs directly into your ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)-enabled phone line, and with its 4 port 10/100Mbps ethernet switch, allows connections to lots of things (check out my other reviews for what it's connected to...). The DCHP server allows automatic allocation of IP addresses to all your network gubbins too - although I've set the IP's for my wireless accesspoint & print server to allow easier access to their brower based interfaces. The DSL-504 has a browser admin interface too for easy installation and setup, just type in the IP address (the default 192.168.0.1, as with most routers, but if it's changed you can always use the command line... ...Q - HELP! A - RTFM. OK! But if you can't be bothered to read the manual then you can always ring the freephone helpline, somewhere in punjhabi-land, they understand that you are English - and end up calling their "rowter" a "rooter" - so by the end of the call ... (allow a/b*c =t where a = idiot level; b=have you read the manual, c=phone charge and t=time spent wasted where you should have done b) ... you are up and running. And there you are - one fully functional Mut's Nuts wireless network. We chose wireless to - - save drilling holes in floors, ceilings and walls - running cables through heating ducts and some holes. We chose Belkin ' cos at the time of purchase we could get all the bits for a whole network** all in the same shop*. * Use PCW at your peril, as ever. They insisted we needed a wireless...
