Wireless-G Broadband router WRT54GC
Advantages: Very Small, wall mountable, good setup wizard
Disadvantages: Some technical jargon in initial setup
...not want to turn this review into a Hi-Fi manual!
The network name can be hidden and you can restrict router access to computers listed in the wireless client list.
The ability to specify either an open system or shared key for authentication.
These are the options I have tweaked and I believe this should prevent basic hacking of my wireless broadband router.
The initial setup was easy once the brain was engaged. Do not do anything other than insert the CD, all the setting up is covered from connecting the power to the ethernet cables. One tip though is to go online via your broadband modem prior to starting the setup. This will ensure that any snags that may arise are due to the subsequent installation.
Anyhow the only problem I had was in terminology, my previous router had said 'cable users click here'. This one offers...

Linksys Wireless-G - Heh, It's Winking At Me
Advantages: New faster wi-fi standard. Easy to set-up
Disadvantages: None specific to Linksys, but wi-fi HAS to less secure than a wired LAN
...off my hands for 30 quid, so at £50 it?s a cheap upgrade.
LINKSYS WIRELESS-G BROADBAND ROUTER (WRT54G)
As you?ll see, they?ve streamlined the name of these things in the last year or so! This is a typical Linksys job to look at, being of a common corporate stackable design about the size that modems used to be, with a couple of ?1st generation? rubber cell-phone antennae sticking out of the back. This one doesn?t quite have the full array of pretty lights that its predecessor had, but this has enabled then to make it a lower profile than my old one.
Its power comes from the usual outboard mains adapter, enabling the Cisco, the parent company to supply more or less the same equipment worldwide. The only other accessory supplied, apart from the installation disk is the extra bit of networking cable you?ll need ? I?ll explain...

Crappest wireless router, looks blue for a reason
Advantages: When it works it works
Disadvantages: Unreliable, slow, low range, ugly as a killer whale's backside
...!'
And so the rest is history...
Well not really. Because I am one of those twats that purchased a Linksys Wireless-G router.
When I first got it out of it's shiny new box, I thought, "Yes! The high speed wireless solution shall dawn upon my home and I will become... free!"
It was easy to setup, just take it out of the box, out of it's protective cover, plug it into the mains with network cable connecting the broadband modem to it... and presto! Wireless-G router all setup! "It looks ugly, but if it performs well then I shall forgive it for it's short comings", I said to myself. The router itself has 2 attenna coming out it's back with 4 x RJ45 cable netowrk connectors for computers that still use the cable alternative. 1 x RJ45 socket was for the modem to connect to it, very standard setup for a router but it works. It is compatible...

Belkin Wireless G Router
Advantages: Works very well 3 floors up.
Disadvantages: If you are on Vista, takes a costly telephone call to get you connected.
...We bought this wireless router as my son wanted to use his Wii on the internet. His room is on the 3rd floor and the computer and router are on the ground floor.
It was simple to set up and the instructions were good, however, because we are using Windows Vista, nothing is ever straight forward. With one longish phone call to India, via the number on the instructions to ring, everything was sorted out. The phone call took 35 minutes for which I am sure i was charged a fortune for and there is no way I could have worked it out for myself, it was far too complicated to get this router to work on Vista.
Once it was working though everything has gone smoothly. I do find that the internet is somewhat slower however he has a great connection on the 3rd floor and we have no complaints. Although the initial set up was frustrating...

Buffalo WBMR-G54 wireless router - a real buffalo?
Advantages: Reasonable price, easy to use, lots of advanced settings
Disadvantages: installation firewall issue, signal strengh only reasonable
...I bought this router from a local Argos shop at an emergency situation i.e. I want it now and therefore not at the best price - 49.99.
Reason: My all singing and all dancing Dynamode R-ADSL-C4W-EG - wireless router had lost its main function, 'internet connectivity' after a month or so of continuous use (see my other review, now updated, for details). All is left is wireless communication i.e. useless. The return of this router back to Amazon caused me a week (lots of emails + recorded delivery + check that the refund includes the recorded delivery etc)
For Argos, there is an obvious advantage - if there is something wrong with it, I just take it back for a refund/replacement on the same day.
This router comes with detail instructions (step-by-step) for installation however it does not cater for the presence of a firewall...

Belkin ADSL2+ High-Speed Mode Wireless-G Router
Advantages: Very stable, good speed
Disadvantages: Not a pretty boy, yet to get remote admin working
...Wireless routers have recently become the bane of my professional life. Having had major issues with 2 (relatively new models) wireless routers from an allegedly top manufacturer that I have been installing and configuring equipment from professionally for over 9 years.
5 replacements under warranty with exact and similar models failed to cure constant lockups and wireless connection drop outs being experienced by my client, often within hours of replacement!
Nearing the end of my client's patience, there being little hair on my scalp left to forcibly extract and with my Valium prescription running low, I decided to try the router I have been using without major issue at home for the last 18 months.
Mindful of the fact that in my clients environment the router's workload/ feature set usage would be totally different...

Very smart router ....
Advantages: Easy to install and configure
Disadvantages: Very few 'instructions' on security
...find out. On the internet utility page you are asked to enable or disable the SSID name being broadcast. By default this is set to enable, which basically means that anyone nearby searching for a wireless network will get yours listed on their screen. By disabling it they can't see your network - which therefore makes it harder for them to get on it.
To find out your MAC address go to run on the start menu and type "ipconfig /all" (without the quote marks -and leaving a space between the g and /). If this doesn't work, type command, and then when your window opens type in the "ipconfig / all". This brings a list up with your ip address etc on. Take down the numbers/letters at the side of 'pyhsical address' - usually 12 digits - this is your personal MAC address.
Next, go back to the web-page utility for the router and go to...

Belkin Wireless G - Cheap and cheerful wireless adapter
Advantages: Cheap, connects to routers of all types I have tried
Disadvantages: Breaks easily, driver problems in Vista
...I had used inbuilt wireless in my laptop (an HP Pavillion tx1000, that I have also reviewed) for two and a half years, until my internal wireless failed and couldn't be easily replaced. I decided to buy an external USB wireless adapter to solve my internet problems, and chose the Belkin Wireless G USB adapter, as other members of my family use them and they are not expensive.
Driver Download
In order to get your Belkin wireless adapter to work, you must download the drviers from the internet. This is very annoying if you need to be wireless to connect easily. Other wireless internet USB (Vodaphone wireless broadband) I've used, have the driver software contained on the USB stick, which automatically loads and allows you to connect completely without a wire. The driver download website is easy, simple and quick. When you search...
