Some Like it Hot
Advantages: Great Food
Disadvantages: Drab surroundings
...which means that he thinks he knows about ethnic sauces. However, if you've ever tasted what Germans call curry, you'll know that it's a pretty weird fusion of hot-dog sauce and general slightly sweet spicy notes. Another colleague is Belgian and has been to India but can't get Indian food at a fair price and with any kind of authenticity within Belgium. Consequently when called up for 'taking out for dinner' duty, I've marched each of them off to the Wirral Tandoori.
First Impressions
Wirral Tandoori doesn't look like much from the outside. It's a white painted building with the windows and beams picked out in black paint. It's even got mock beams on the outside like the ones John Prescott put through his expenses along with all the toilet seats. The large red sign above the door contrasts with the green beer-garden umbrellas in...

Wirral Country Park - the Wirral Way
Advantages: Great day out for all the family
Disadvantages: none
...Now that the warmer weather has arrived I felt it was time to write about one of the places that I have visited on so many occasions from a child through to an adult and somewhere that will never loose its attraction.
History of Wirral Country Park
During the time of the Victorians a busy railway linked Hooton to West Kirby on the Wirral 12 miles away, miles of the railway line ran near to the Dee Estuary. The Steam Trains that used the railway used to bring townspeople to various stops along the line such as Parkgate for a cheap day out and back to the cities and towns at the end of the day. However, in 1962 the line was closed the seaside resorts as was where silted up and the track lay derelict for many years. In 1973 backed by the Countryside Commision and a lot of work this old railway line was opened as Wirral Country...

The village hotel & leisure club in Wirral.
Advantages: Clean and fresh
Disadvantages: Like a rabbit Warren
...The village hotel & leisure club in Wirral
Have recently joined here and at £32 per month, each, we feel we have a bargain. They even waved the joining fee, normally £70.
We joined, my wife and I, on the ?Flexi? promotion. This is where you are only tied in for 3 months as opposed to the ?Full? 12 month tie in.
Extras given include £15 to spend in their restaurants, 10% discounts in the bars and coffee shop and 2 free vouchers for friends/family. The vouchers entitle the user to a free week in the gym, pool etc worth £70.
If you recommend someone and they join you also get £50 of a nights stay in the hotel.
A fair few incentives but to be honest we just want to use the leisure facilities.
My wife is recovering from Breast Cancer and she has some back problems resulting from the Radiography. She...

Hotel with ghosts?
Advantages: Beautiful historic setting
Disadvantages: none.
...a glacier during the Ice Age and legend has it that the Mermaid of the Black Rock sat on these .
In 1911 the Trustees of the Railway Convalescent Homes bought the castle and remained the owners until 1970. In 1974 the castle was bought by the Wallasey Corporation who did very little with it and Wirral Borough Council eventually sold it to Ken Harding who opened it again as a hotel. Whilst the Wallasey Corporation owned the hotel I was growing up in the area and there where stories abound about murders and ghosts in the castle, secret passage ways with blood stains and much more, most due to rumour as generally the castle was not open to the public back then.
****What does Leasowe Castle offer us today****
Set back from the main road you have to pass through the wrought iron gates and along the drive which gives the hotel a grand...

The Village that was named after a soap
Advantages: Picturesque quiet village with wonderful architecture. Lady Lever Art Gallery!
Disadvantages: I don't live there but would love to.
...Port Sunlight, named after a brand of soap manufactured by Lever Brothers, is a picturesque little village nestling in the heart of the Wirral. Picturesque with beautiful landscaped parklands set amongst quaint rows of houses purposely built for Lever Brother's factory workers overlooked by some impressive public buildings including an art gallery, church and striking war memorial.
It was in 1887 that William Lever made the decision to relocate his Warrington soap factory. The Wirral was ideal for the factory needs with excellent transport links by road, rail and water. By March 1888 work had started on building the factory. As well as the factory, Lever had a village built for his workers (In fact until the 1980s all of the houses were still occupied by employees of Unilever). The village, he named Port Sunlight - a port...

Disappointing and Overpriced at Garrett's
Advantages: The food was OK
Disadvantages: Too expensive for the quality of food, lack of attention to detail, much too noisy
...paroxysms of delight, recommending a restaurant whose menu she described as 'international' and getting out a pen to draw me a map. My mind screamed 'NOOOOOOOO' but there wasn't really anything I could do. Joep was now expecting to go to this place and Kerstin would expect me to tell her the next day what I thought. My plans to sneak off and eat prawn toasts and hot and sour soup evaporated before my eyes.
On the basis of this you can perhaps assume that I went to the restaurant with a sense of reluctance but I like to think I still kept an open mind.
Garrett's
The restaurant was Garrett's in Bebington on the Wirral, apparently named after the chef, Garret Forsey who owns it along with his wife who I assumed was the lady doing 'front of house'. If you know the area, it's just outside Port Sunlight village and just down the road from...

Lets have some sunlight
Advantages: Beautiful location
Disadvantages: None
...Let me tell you about the lovely village of Port Sunlight on the Wirral.
History
Port Sunlight is a garden village which was founded in 1888 by William Hesketh Lever to house his soap factory workers. This came about as in 1887 William Lever began to look for a new site for his soap making factory as they had outgrown their premises in Warrington on the banks of the River Mersey. The site needed to be near to a river for importing material and had to have enough land to allow for further expansion. There also needed to be near a railway line to be able to transport finished goods.
Port Sunlight was built based on Lever's ideas on prosperity-sharing with the building maintenance and upkeep of the village was subsidised with a portion of the profits from the Lever factory. Lever helped to plan this beautiful garden...

With Arriva you may actually arive...
Advantages: New fleets for new routes, and the majourity of the older buses repainted if not completely refurbished both inside and out., Lots of new training buses, whih mean more employment and better services., Improvment to local travel as a whole.
Disadvantages: High fares for all services (although I hope these are only to cover short term losses and will be reconcidered when all services are stable). No change what-so-ever on the already shambolic train front. Bad customer relations when it comes to info.
...Arriva took over from Merseyside Travel Limited (MTL) in early 2000. This was seen as a lifeline to the laughing stock of the North’s bus services. Delays, high fares, buses that turned up only when the company had enough money to fill them with petrol, dirty vehicles and millions of pounds of debt put off generations of people off public buses and into their cars which caused many problems for Liverpool and the surrounding area. Arriva knew the task it was taking on, and the many problems it would have to overcome. But it also knew of the major monopoly that MTL had on Merseyside bus services, and the franchise MTL held with Merseyrail. CMT, the nearest competitor, was a fraction of the size of MTL, and so Arriva promised the people of Merseyside a first class, quality bus service within 5 years.
3 years on, and what...

Enjoy yourself with added guilt.
Advantages: Free. Lots to see and do
Disadvantages: I couldn't see a cafe. Perhaps I missed it. There are plenty around anyway
...long in there as we did. we only had 45 mins before we went floating in a bus on the dock!
The exhibitions included customs, Liverpool as a naval port and the battle of the atlantic, and the titanic, which was built on merseyside. The museum has a knack of making everything so interesting through it's touchy feely approach. There are screens everywhere inviting you to go and play.
The museums best exhibition is about the slave trade, where Liverpool holds a dubious reputation. The artefacts are interesting, with tribal masks and mud hut reconstructions but it is the multimedia that blows you away. Sound and light seems to come from all directions. The use of well designed photo projection and videos of actors actually leaves you feeling quite harrowed and ashamed. There is a central projection are filled with the sounds and sights...
