Wise children read this book (run out of puns)
Advantages: Funny, scandalous, happy ending
Disadvantages: Structure leaves a lot to be desired - you might get lost
...I bought this book '3 for £1' from a charity shop having only vaguely heard of Angela Carter, but when faced with a bunch of books I have no idea how to choose from, I usually go for the prettiest cover, or the author with the nicest name. In this case, having found 2 books, and faced with a shelf of unknown authors, I went with the one who shared a name with my mother. Awh.
The Author
Wise Children was Angela Carter's last novel before she died of cancer, aged 51. It is full of references to the works of Shakespeare that surrounded her childhood, introduced by her mother, and the Hollywood films her father took her to see.
She was born in 1940 and during the war lived with her grandmother in Yorkshire who introduced her to the feminism that pervades many of her books. The Bloody Chamber, for example, is one of her...

Wise Children by Angela Carter
Advantages: A Colourful, vibrant, rich novel
Disadvantages: the author's lack of moral conduct
...Angela Carter's Wise Children is the life story of show businesses Chance Sisters. Dora Chance, twin sister of Nora, narrates throughout the story. She tells their colourful life tale upon the commencement of the twin's seventy- fifth birthdays.
The story is set mainly in England. The twins spend a great deal of their lives based at their childhood home in Brixton, South London. I think Angela Chance has chosen this setting to exaggerate and highlight the twin's illegitimacy. The North and South divide of social London were very clear at the time of the books setting. The "Right side of the tracks is the North and the wrong side, the South. There is to be no overlapping of borders, as the sides are very definitely separated by the river.
At the time of the twin's births, there was a huge stigma attached to being illegitimate...

Not only for the wise
Advantages: A joyful celebreation of life
Disadvantages: It ends...
...Wise Children, like all Angela Carter's novels, is very, very, very hard to quantify. The novel itself is a minefield of clichés, stock characters and contrived situations waiting to happen. My point being: this never happens. Ever. Not at all. This does not seem possible.
Contextualisation: knowing the name and not much else I picked up the novel second hand, having read the first few pages in the shop. I was enjoying it but there was the niggling thought in the back of my mind: this book could get annoying. But I knew it would take 30 or forty pages to find out and so what was there to lose.
What indeed?
I bought it.
Wise Children, on the surface, is the tale of Dora and Nora Chance (known in their 'glory days' of music hall / vaudeville as the Lucky Chances), bastard offspring of Thespian Sir Melchior Hazard, one...

PAIN RELIEF FOR CHILDREN
Advantages: Does not contain paracetamol
Disadvantages: can cause side effects
...I am not a huge user of paracetamol based medicines and was using Calpol for a while for my son and when I realised that here was now a Nurofen for children on the market in syrup form too I began to use that.
I have been taking Nurofen for as long as I can remember, it contains brufen but doesn't contain any paracetamol at all so as an adult you can take this along with paracetamol but this is not recommended for children. Also this should not be used if your child suffers from asthma or has stomach pains (same goes for adults).
It comes in a brown plastic bottle with a child proof lid on it (that goes without saying really) with the word Nurofen clearly marked on it in red letters on a grey background. It comes with a measureing guide which looks like a syringe, my son screamed when he first saw it until I had to reassure him...

Not yet a Wise Woman
Advantages: Smells great, really hydrating, smoothes skin.
Disadvantages: Expensive, heavy.
...As a consultant with The Body Shop At Home I get to try out lots of different products, well how can I tell people if I think a product is any god or not and talk about it with any certainty if I haven't?! Well that is my excuse anyway. As a consultant I have to keep my kit up together and try and make more sales by getting customers interested, a good way of doing this is by letting them try the product they are interested in for themselves.
To enable customers to use some of the products I am now able to buy samples of a few products and so have. I purchased several of the different samples on offer after doing a large party. One of these samples was a pack of 20 Wise Woman Day Cream samples. I have tried the cleanser and eye creams which were in my kit when I first received it and I always show these at parties (unless the guests...

a novel to love
Advantages: great ensight to carters own veiws
Disadvantages: changing of time fames can be quite heavy
...Angela Carters narrative Wise Children novels explores many themes and expresses many of her veiws. It is clear through her writting that she was a feminst thgouh the dominance of the male characters. Without giving away the novels main theme, the text explores, carnivalesque, magic realism, feminism, illegitimacy and legitimacy and the decline of the british empire through the characters. It amazes me hoe Carter can express so much in so little pages! The novel is written in so much depth and there is so much to be analysed from the text, that it gives the reader so much detail about Carter herself! There is also a comical element throughout the novel, which adds a sense of style and enjoyment. Although tricky to get into at first, when the novel progresses more detail is given and it becomes easier to undrstand. A great read for those...

Happy Parents...Happy Children
Advantages: Offers a wide range of friendly and fun services
Disadvantages: Not all towns will have a center
...Buckinghamshire Children?s Centers
As a mum of a nearly two year old, very active, daughter, I am always on the lookout for new and exciting things for her to do and what with the colder weather setting in, there is a limit to where I can take her outside especially as she has ?funny blood? I call it and gets very cold and blue very easily. I take her to many toddlers though not long ago just down the road from where I live, a new Children?s center opened attached to the local school and me and a friend who has a young three year old boy decided to try it out.

The Children of Men
Advantages: A chilling story, menacing atmosphere
Disadvantages: Can be a bit slow at times
...P.D. James is a successful British crime fiction writer but having never read her work before, I picked this book up out of interest after vaguely hearing about the film based on it.
"The Children of Men" is not a crime fiction novel but is instead a dystopian novel set in a future England where no-one has been able to have a child for twenty-five years. The novel is all about the consequences of this mass childlessness on society.
I have to say I quite enjoyed it and thought it had a nicely menacing air. It was quite indebted to Orwell's "1984" in some ways but was by no means a replica.
The main character is Theo, who isn't always a sympathetic protagonist as he can be quite irritating and also cold. He is the cousin of the Warden of England who is basically a dictator. The book begins with Theo's diary, in which we find out more...
