Advantages: Good story and acting, classic.

...The Witches was one of my favourite Dahl books as a child and when I saw this DVD in a Christmas Cracker Sale on Play.com, I couldn't resist an escape to my childhood. The story follows a young boy called Luke who has been tragically orphaned and subsequently lives with his Grandmother, who fills him in on all the necessary facts that a child should know about witches. When Luke's grandmother becomes ill, the pair are advised to take a relaxing trip to the coast. Unfortunately, the trip becomes less relaxing than they previously envisioned. On arrival at the hotel, Luke and his grandmother see a rather elegant yet aloof foreign lady who appears to be quite revered by her followers. Advantages: sweet, classic, cat-based story of hope
Disadvantages: a little quaint, with some less-than-fascinating characters

...Somewhere on the ether that is Ciao, there lurks a Sootica.P.Monster (we like her). Now, when it comes to the Pocket Monsterishness, I couldn't possibly comment. But I DO know where the inspiration for Sootica came from... evidently we grew up with at least one book in common, and that book was Gobbolino the Witch's Cat. Gobbolino is a kitten who understands just what it's like to feel like you were born in the wrong place at the wrong time. ...of the naughty witch in the woods. Finally, Kim, a Goth with a touch of ESP and a side order of sarcasm. She's here because she thought the first movie was 'cool'. Off they pop, into the woods. Round 2: Still standing. Our intrepid tourists camp out at the ruin of Rustin Parr's house, the child killer from the 40's who heard voices. Jeff sets up cameras while the others prepare to party. (Don't those teens know any better?) At this point they're interrupted by another tourist group taking the 'Blair Witch Walk' and there is an argument about territory. These intruders - complete with Japanese tourists - are persuaded to go and check out Coffin Rock, another 'scary' site, and all is well again. Advantages: Mildred's back!
Disadvantages: A long time coming

...played by Ethel! This is a great read for children and also for adults like me that loved Mildred as a child. Mildred is such a loveable character and the things she gets up to so silly that it is an irresistible read. 'The Worst Witch Saves the Day' is available in paperback from all good books shops priced at £4.99 and of course from online stores also. Amazon also has used copies starting from 74p and offers deals if you buy it in a package with another Worst Witch book. They didn't seem to bother Jess as at the time she couldn't care how she looked and refused to wash which didn't help the matter… Now things are different, she wont leave the house unless her hair is done and her make up done which has helped us to try out some new products all to no avail. ...I don't suffer from particularly spot-prine skin, just the odd one every now and then, but I am a girl who goes for less mess and ease of use. After using various face washes over the years, mainly Clinique Foaming Facial Wash, my finances changed and I had to look for something a little less on the pricey side. I saw Witch foaming Facial wash first on offer in Superdrug, at the time it was in a Pale green and white bottle with a large pump at the top. As I have fond memories of Witch Hazel gel soothing my nettle stings as a child, and it being half-price, which perfectly suited my budget at the time, I decided to give it a try and have been hooked ever since. Advantages: Great story, wonderful scenery and fantastic visual effects
Disadvantages: The additional footage seems a tad pointless

...their greatest fears and help restore Narnia back to its former glory. In the main the actors are little known. In fact the only ones I can remember being in different productions were Tilda Swinton who plays the White Witch and was also in 'The Beach' and 'Constantine' and Jim Broadbent and James McAvoy who play the professor and the Mr. Tumnus respectively who are both well-known british actors of screen and television. That being so the acting is really well done with the children, who could easily have broken the film with their performances, coming across as believable and still retaining the child-like innocence you would expect of kids thrown into a snow-covered wardrobe land of turkish delight and talking beavers. Once again, as in Peter Jackson's trilogy, it is the New Zealand landscape and visual effects that really bring the film... Read review
