Another Italian In Wokingham?? Ok then Just One More
Advantages: Efficent and helpful staff, delicious food
Disadvantages: Wokingham's 6th Italian restaurant
...The town centre in Wokingham has a dominance of three types of shops and restaurants. There are probably more Estate Agents, Indian restaurants and Italian restaurants than a town the size of Wokingham really needs. So the last thing we needed in town was another Italian, but late last year the Zizzi chain opened its doors to become the towns 6th Italian restaurant. Of course from my own point of view this was only going to be a good thing as I was aware of Zizzi's from living in Basingstoke and knew that it wouldn't be long till I was trying their new location.
With their first restaurant opening in 1999 the chain has grown quite rapidly with over 100 locations covering the Country. The Wokingham Zizzi opened last September in a prominent location on Broad Street directly across the road from the post office. Not only had it become...

Oakingham Or Wokingham
Advantages: Lots of nice pubs and resturants
Disadvantages: Not much to do during the day
...Although I’m not Wokingham born and bred I do consider it to be my adopted hometown. We moved here when I was about 8 years old and over the past 13 years have lived in two different parts of the town. Most people it seems don’t actually know too much about Wokingham or even where it is so hopefully by the time you have read this you might be a little bit wiser.
The town started live out as a very small village called Oakingham, deep in Windsor Great Park. That was until the turn of the last century, when a number of people from Woking (Surrey) moved to the village and changed the name. The new name Wokingham was taken from the Old Saxon farmer Wocca, with the new name meaning “Wocca’s Peoples Land”.
The town used to be famous for the manufacture Wokingham Bells until the majority of manufacture moved...

Almost bowled over!
Advantages: good facilities and good bowling
Disadvantages: too many slot machines
...I had never taken my girls bowling before but decided yesterday that as it was the Easter Holidays it would be a nice treat. Therefore with a couple of friends we booked a lane at The Big Apple in Wokingham which is our nearest ten pin bowling alley. It is situated close to the centre of Wokingham on the same site as Carnival Swimming Pool, Burger King and a nightclub the name of which escapes me. There is a big car park which obviously there needs to be for all of those amenities. You do have to pay to park but if you are using the bowling alley or the swimming pool, your car park fee is refunded when you pay your entry fee.
The girls were very excited all day at the prospect of bowling and their excitement continued when we got there. It is a bit unfortunate that the moment you walk in you meet tons of bright garish noisy arcade games...

The Pool Tables Gone, But The Pubs Better
Advantages: Friendly Quick Service, Central Location, Good Beer, Much better than it used to be
Disadvantages: No Pool Table, Prices of Pints but thats a problem all over town
...I suddenly remembered the other night that I had started to do a pub crawl round Wokingham, in order to sample the delights of each hostelry so I could tell people about it. Well having restarted this virtual pub-crawl it was time for a visit to the Raglan. This never used to be a regular place for us but quite recently we seem to be going there more than anywhere else, but there is a reason for it, which I?ll get to in a minute.
The Raglan is located about ¾ of the way down Denmark Street before you get to the Dukes Head (my last pub op). With this area of town undergoing a bit of refurbishment, what with the old Tesco being refitted into a pub and restaurant there seems to be a lot more happening down this way now. As not to be left behind The Raglan, formally The Lord Raglan has undergone a complete refit.
It never used to be...

I've Been Down The Pub Again
Advantages: Friendly pub, Jukebox
Disadvantages: Overpriced, Usually V Busy on a Friday/Saturday
...Right I?m trying to avoid doing another music op before I go off on holiday and I know that?s probably going to be impossible, but having visited another of my local hostelries over the weekend I thought it was about time for another visit to a Wokingham pub. This one isn?t so as regular a haunt as the Dog and Duck and the Broad Street Tavern but we do occasionally pay it a visit.
The pub in question is the Dukes Head, located at the bottom of Denmark Street in Wokingham; it is within close proximity to the Job Centre and the library, in case anyone is interested. No price difference to anywhere really in the town this is normally our last stop before we hit Eternity If we fancy a bit of clubbing or first bowl if we?re up for some pi**ed bowling.
This is the first pub on this Wokingham tour where we don?t actually know...

Come on then lets go down the Dog
Advantages: Nice friendly village like pub
Disadvantages: Hard to get to unless your local
...Right as I mentioned on a previous op I?m doing a guide to the pubs in Wokingham and this is the second stop on my trip. Of course there is no real order to my writing, as I will just be doing each pub as I arrive at them. Today my drinking location is going to be the Dog and Duck.
For anyone who knows Wokingham or for anyone who might fancy trying this pub out after my op it?s located in Emmbrook almost next door to the school at the bottom of Matthews Green Road where it turns into Emmbrook Road. A large car Park is available for anyone wishing to drive there, which to be honest is the only way unless you actually live around there.
As you go in the door to the pub you can either go left in to the restaurant, which I?ve never done or right into the lounge bar. Within the bar there are probably 6 or 7 tables to sit at, a TV, Dart...

Bar Keep Another Pint Of Your Best
Advantages: One Of the Best Pubs in Wokingham
Disadvantages: Little small around about the Bar
...Over the coming year I have set myself a challenge to do a guided tour of the pubs in my local area as I feel some of them need to be brought to the attention of anyone who so happens to be passing through the humble market town of Wokingham and gets a little over awed by the shear amount of pubs that such a small place has.
So in order to kick of my challenge, which yes you?re right is just an excuse for me to go out drinking ;), I?m going to start of in a regular pub we visit. The Broad Street Tavern is situated on Broad Street oddly enough, opposite Lloyds bank and next to Wokingham College. It used to be a house until about 1996 when a Lottery Winner bought it and decided to turn it into a Wine Bar for him and all his mates to drink in.
Well needless to say he was bankrupt within a couple of years and ended up having to sell...

Lovely location for a lovely hotel
Advantages: Near the town, great food, well appointed rooms
Disadvantages: No swimming pool
...The hotel has a very grand and old England feel to it. The rooms are each unique in their own way but each is very luxurious. They offer comfortable beds and nice soft linen. The rooms all have televisions, many are LCD panels mounted on the wall. The hotel offers a great location to stroll into Wokingham and enjoy its many pubs and restaurants as well. Although you could also dine at the Miltons restaurant attached to the hotel which offers some fantastic quality food. There are plenty of hotels in the area but this one has a great location, a great restaurant attached and is not part of a huge faceless chain and offers a genuinely better experience. For the same money you could stay at the Hilton - but then you are on the edge of the motorway rather than in town and will have a pretty standard meal in a pretty stale setting....

JAG Wokingham - don't buy there!
Advantages: haven't found any
Disadvantages: poor service
...I had very BAD experience with Jag in Wokingham. I have bought there a phone that I was told was a brand new phone sold at a promotional price. I was also told that due to a system problem they were not able to give me an invoice but instead I was given a handwritten receipt and promised that my invoice will be sent to me shortly.
After receiving the invoice via post I have found that the phone was not a promotional item as I was told at the purchase but it was a buy-back phone. Unfortunately to me the phone was faulty and also in the box there was no user manual in English nor headphones. After three visits in the store while they have been convincing me that it's a normal thing for a new phone's battery to last only 1-2 days (on stand by) they have finally agreed to take back the phone, they gave me a credit note and promised to...

Great comfy traditional pub
Advantages: Comfortable Cosy Great food and service
Disadvantages: Currently got the decorators in
...The Duke's has always been one of the most popular pubs in Wokingham and new owners, who took over in the summer have dramatically improved the food and service. The pub is having a restaurant and hotel added and the bar is also being refurbed - great place - great atmosphere!
The beer is Brakspear and is very well kept - a pint is £2.55 and there is a good run of lagers. They also seem rather pleased with their Guinness, which I don't drink.
The food is very wide-ranging - in the evening it is quite resauranty - stuffed chicken breast, that kind of thiing and they do bar meals as well at lunchtime.
It is a shame the decorators are in at the moment but it is going to be the best pub in town when it is finished - they are adding 5 bedrooms in what was an old skittle alley - they are all ensuite and apparently extremely smart...
