The White Horse: A step in the right direction.

Advantages: Scenery, Visual Impact of the Food, Friendly Locals
Disadvantages: Value for Money - perehaps a little expensive, awkward to find.

...The White Horse of Woolley Moor is set upon a beautiful backdrop, the hills around rolling for miles and the roads twisting and turning. These roads will take your tastebuds on a journey towards some of the finest 'pub food' that I believe Derbyshire has to offer. Many reviews exist of the White Horse, terms such as "par", "average", "cluttered" and "quantity rather than quality" seem to dominate them. However, the pub/restaraunt has recently been taken over - two new owners and a host of new kitchen staff, including a Head Cook who is able to put "worked with Gordon Ramsay" on his resume, have ensured a complete change of direction. The foods has taken a step away from the tradtional pub menu. While favorites such as the Gammon Steak and Sandwiches do remain, there is a clear shift of emphasis with meals such as Lemon Sole...

The Rise and Fall of a Rolling Stone

...Question: What do Marilyn Monroe, Jim Morrison, JFK and Princess Diana all have in common? Answer: People have formulated 'conspiracy' theories as to how they died. While most of them don't really bear any serious examination but in the case of Rolling Stones founder member Brian Jones who was found dead in his Swimming Pool in 1969 the verdict of death by misadventure does seem a little more debatable than many of the others. 'Stoned' a film by first time director Stephen Woolley better known for being producer to such diverse offerings as 'The Company Of Wolves', 'Letter To Breshnev' and 'Interview with the Vampire' was a real labour of love. The research undertaken by Woolley took over ten years to compile and included interviews and testimonial and official statements of those people involved in the last few tragic months...

...With its companion volume "The Complete Yes Minister", this book forms the memoirs of the Rt Hon James Hacker, formerly Minister at the Department for Administrative Affairs and in this volume (after ch. 1) elevated to Number 10. Together with his trusted (!) team of Sir Humphrey Appleby and Bernard Woolley, Hacker lurches from crisis to crisis, always somehow coming out on to. A highly amusing and witty read, this book is one which you can read over and over again without tiring of the jokes. What is more, despite being now over 10 years old, the humour remains as fresh and as true to life as it was when the TV series on which it is based were first screened. Politics, it seems, changes little - the same issues and the same situations happening more recently point out the remarkably perceptive writing which these authors have produced...

Review of The Complete Yes Prime Minister - Anthony Jay, Jonathan Lynn

Comedy at its best!

Advantages: Paul Eddington, Nigel Hawthorne, Derek Fowlds and brilliant timing!
Disadvantages: None for me

...One of my favourite comedies from the 1980's was Yes Minister with the equally brilliant follow up Yes Prime Minister. Written by Antony Jay and Jonathon Lynn the show followed the fortunes of Right Honourable Jim Hacker played by Paul Eddington (of the Good Life) who was appointed to the job of Minister of Administrative Affairs. He was initially placed in this job to keep him out of trouble as he is more than a little idealistic and really believes that he can make a difference. His Private Secretary is Bernard Woolley played by Derek Fowlds (now of Heartbeat fame). Bernard has the job of managing Jim Hacker's diary and generally looking after him but he is also at the mercy of Senior Civil Servant Sir Humphrey Appleby played brilliantly by Nigel Hawthorne. Each episode sees Hacker trying to improve things by cutting costs...

The most wonderful place on earth

Disadvantages: Can be very cold in winter. Watch out for money traders and rogue poliemen

Interestingly, although their currency is still the Czech Koruna, (and unlike my first trip, these can now be ordered before you go) my hotel room was quoted and paid for in Euros. Final tips (stands as much in 2003 as is did in 1996): Make sure you have a good pair of walking boots, as there is lots of cobbled streets, and if you travelling in winter, make sure you take lots of woolley clothes. Avoid money traders in the street, it is illegal. Beware of rogue policeman, who demand on the spot fines. A weekend break to this breaktaking city is definitely not enough....

Fund Manager on the Move?

Disadvantages: Potential change of manager. Volatile sector.

...I have recently heard that the manager of this fund, Tim Woolley, is leaving to set up his own fund management company. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the information but I am aware that when something of this nature happens, it can have serious repercussions on performance. The Henderson Global Technology fund has enjoyed amazing success over an extended period, and much of this has to be down to the fund manager. The fund has achieved 530% growth in the last five years alone, without undue volatility (until this year). The fund stands at one-and-a-quarter billion pounds, which is smaller than Aberdeen Technology, which could explain why they've out-performed Aberdeen over that period. A change of fund manager is always worrying, so if you haven't invested in this fund yet but were thinking of doing, it may be worth waiting...

Is Hope always a good thing?

Advantages: Well written, interesting, good characters

..., and they were so well-written I felt for them all. It is a really good read, not an overly happy one but it is a realistic book, with stories of love, life and relationships and how fragile these things are to us, and how family should always come first. It isn't a long book but the story is so involving you won't want to put it down. It was a fantastic read, and a great spin on the usual pregnancy stories you seem to get these days.
