Upon Westminster Bridge-Wordsworth/London-Blake

Advantages: Memorable poem!
Disadvantages: N/A

...Compare and contrast Wordsworth's and Blake's poems. What do the poems tell you about the differing attitudes towards the city? The two poems tell us a lot about the poet's respective attitudes towards the city. We learn of their (occasionally) differing attitudes towards industrialisation, nature and the like. We can observe how the two poets have used different techniques such as structure, rhyme, imagery etc. to enhance their messages. The poet William Wordsworth was born in 1770 and by the time he died on Shakespeare day in 1850 he had influenced English poetry as a whole by producing some of the greatest works in history. He was educated at grammar school and lived much of his life in amongst the northern lakes in the heart of the Lake District. The poet, artist, and printmaker William Blake on the other hand was not...

Lines Written Above Tintern Abbey, a beautiful poem by Wordsworth

Advantages: A beautifully written poem that can be read over and over to bring the reader a sense of peace
Disadvantages: A rather long poem that can be tedious to get through

...Romantic poetry often concerns itself with the power of nature. This theme is also especially predominant in Samuel Coleridge?s poetry. This love of the natural world is often linked with rural imagery from the British countryside. Lines Written Above Tintern Abbey contains many images illustrating the beauty of the countryside and the peaceful lives of its inhabitants. This is emphasized when put in contrast with the dark and foreboding nature of the urbanisation of the countryside. It begins with Wordsworth reminiscing about the beauty of the abbey and its continued beauty even after 5 years. Wordsworth uses beautiful imagery to describe the surrounding cliffs and sea. The murmur of sound allows for an undertone of isolation and peace. This creates the image of a sanctuary for reflection for the abbey itself. By using the word...

Mr Wordsworth and me....

Advantages: see review

...One of the first signs that spring is defiantly coming is the sight of daffodils in full bloom. William Wordswoth was obviously moved by the sight of hundreds of daffodils when he wrote his famous daffodils poem in 1804. Having walked in Wordsworth's native Lake District and experienced the daffodils I can understand why he was so moved! In fact I have been moved to writing a review all about my favourite flower! When I say that daffodils herald the arrival of spring that is not strictly true. There are numerous different types of daffodils and some can bloom as early as late December, hardly spring! Daffodils are really easy to grow and will thrive pretty much anywhere. They do best in well-drained soil however. Bulbs should be planted from about August until November. Bulbs should be planted in a hole roughly three times their...

London by Wordsworth and Blake

Advantages: Two great poets sentiments on the capital
Disadvantages: none, both great...

...A comparison of 'London' by William Blake and 'Composed upon Westminster Bridge' by William Wordsworth. These two poems were written within eight years of one another, the first being 'London' in 1794 and then 'Composed upon Westminster Bridge' in 1802. They are both Romantics and typical of the style, both have an emotional and expressive freedom in the way they are written and a seemingly honest view of real life. Both poems have an immediate link in the form of the mention of London or places related to London in the tittle, this means that even before reading the poem you would expect that London or some aspect of life in London would be a theme in both poems. London could be considered a major theme of both poems but for completely contrasting reasons; 'London's theme is more about the people of London and the conditions...

...Hawkshead but it is limited and booking is advisable. Phone 015394-36946 for bookings. There are some great places to ride from Hawkshead and a map is provided when you hire your bike. Children's bikes are also available. Hawkshead *************** Hawkshead dates back to Norse times and was originally owned by the monks of Furness abbey. In medieval times it became a prosperous wool town. Following the dissolution of the monasteries in 1532 Hawkshead was grated market town status and it remains a market town to day. Hawkshead boasts connections with both Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth. The old grammar school attended by Wordsworth can still be seen and visited. The school dates back to 1585 and is well worth a visit. Inside you can sit at the original desks and even see carvings made by pupils. There is an interesting talk...

Shabby - but certainly not chic

Advantages: Location
Disadvantages: Service was dreadful

...I'd wanted to stay in this hotel for years and was really disappointed when I actually did! My sister and I, our boyfriends and our parents spent a long weekend at the Wordsworth. It cost an arm and a leg as we booked half board. We really regretted that decision. At dinner on the first evening, it took ages to get served. The meal consisted of loads of small courses, but they were really odd combinations of foods. My mother had ordered steak - she actually got three ten pence sized pieces of meat in a nondescript sauce. Although we'd booked for 7.30, with the slow service, it was really late by the time we ordered our puddings and all the nice things had gone already. We were quite surprised - the dining room hadn't been particularly full. Walking around Grasmere next day, we saw a lovely bistro where the food was much more to our...

Wordsworth's 'little part of heaven'

Advantages: Very interesting to wordsworth fans, and also if you like old history
Disadvantages: young children might not enjoy it, you might not want to leave the village!

...Dove Cottage was the home of William Wordsworth from 1799 to 1808, the years of his major works as a poet. It was probably built in the 17th century, as a small hotel (hostelry) In those days public houses were painted white as they could be noticed from afar. Now when we look at the buildings we think it is to make them look quaint! It is situated just at the edge of Grasmere as you head towards Ambleside. It is on the left turning at the roundabout on the main road. The Houseplace (living room) This is the first room Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy entered on arriving at Dove Cottage on 2oth December 1799. Today we would call this the parlour. The room has been kept as it was in Wordsworth's day. This includesa window seat, slate floor and walls covered with dark-stained pannelling. ( The first time I went for a tour...

Review of Dove Cottage, Grasmere

Wordsworth lived here a long time ago .

Advantages: pretty place, lots of interesting places about Wordsworth
Disadvantages: touristy

...Grasmere. I may not have been to Grasmere recently but in my lifetime I have visited many times both for day visits and for holidays in the area. Grasmere is a tiny village in the Lake District, Cumbria. Grasmere is well known as the place where William Wordsworth, the poet lived from 1799 to 1808 in a house called Dove cottage on the edge of the village. He also lived in other properties in the village, Dove cottage is open to the public and next to it is a Wordsworth museum. William Wordsworth and his wife Mary are both buried in St Oswald's church. Sadly to say because of the links to Wordsworth this village has become a little touristy with many gift shops places to eat and places to stay. However Grasmere with its pretty stone cottages is a pleasant village for a stop over and visits. We visited because we were in...

Beautiful Location On The Shores Of Windermere

Advantages: Swimming Pool,Lovely Views,Excellent food
Disadvantages: Some of the rooms are getting a bit tired but they are working on this

...Located in a beautiful spot on the shores of lake Windermere with large windows on the lake side overlooking it. I got married here and had a fantastic day the hotel really made it, not just with the views but the level of service was extremely good and everyone said that the food was the best they had had at a wedding before. The Wordsworth suite which we used as our honeymoon suite for a few nights is out of this world although isn,t cheap, you have your own private door to the pool, garden overlooking the lake with hot tub, massive bed, remote control curtains well worth it if you fancy treating yourselves. All in all The Beach Hill Hotel is well worth a look, its only a taxi ride away from Bowness but is nice if you want to stay in-house and dine and chill a bit, and I would highly recomend it as a wedding venue....
