Its Not Old-Fashioned, Its Modem

Advantages: Easy to install, Fast enough,Extra features
Disadvantages: There are cheaper 56k modems but won't be better

...After my internal modem got tragically killed in a storm I needed a good value modem with a good enough spec to get by. The Rockwell 56k V90 is exactly that. With the funeral of my old modem out of the way I got to work on bringing this new modem into the family household. The first point to make is that its an external modem which is good-this means it can be disconnected before a storm, thus avoiding irrepairable damage. An alternative to this is to buy a surge protector-these are about a fiver and definitely worth the investment. Another good point is that it is extremely easy to install. It took me under 10 minutes, from when I opened the box to when I started dialing. A CD is enclosed with the modem and all you have to do is get to the Rockwell directory and take it from there. Avoid at all costs

Advantages: uhh, none
Disadvantages: Just about everything

...This was the first modem that I brought, and I can honestly say it is absolute rubbish. Installing the modem was a tedious and time consuming process ? I had to install the software twice and even then perform tweaking to get Windows to recognise the correct COM port. The performance of the modem is very poor and seems to degrade with time. I am thoroughly disappointed with this modem and recommend anyone to say well away. If you?re looking for a cheap but nasty, bad performing modem, buy a Creatix V.90 Voice Fax modem. If, on the other hand, you?re looking for a reasonably performing modem, look elsewhere....

Aztech's classy modem

Advantages: Works perfectly as a fax, dialup and along side broadband
Disadvantages: Features you can't use or find

It's cheap, I'm cheerful.

Advantages: Reliable, cheap, fast modem that's easy to install and you get support if you have trouble.
Disadvantages: A bit more expensive than internal modems.

...I bought my Novatech 56K external modem last year, having discovered my PCI internal one was pretty much dead. It was about the cheapest on the market from a reputable company. I've seen other modems from other companies looking identical, so I think it was an OEM-produced model that Novatech have branded. The modem is very easy to install - being external it's compatible with anything, so it allowed me to move over to Linux, where it has worked perfectly well. It has the standard complement of lights, which I find useful, especially when you're not sure if the connection is still up. At around 50 pounds, the Novatech modem is still good value.
