Advantages: Tried + tested Disadvantages: Windows Vista soon?
...Lets face it - 90% of PC users use a Microsoft OS (operating system). The vast majority of those will be using XP. So you're not exactly going to be alone if you do decide to buy this.
So, is it a good idea to go with the masses? Yes. Unless you are really techy and know software and hardware as if it were your job. Then you might plump for Linux or something similar.
XP was released ages ago - about 2000 if memory serves correctly. As someone who started out on DOS, moved to windows 3.x, then Windows 98 and then XP (via Millenium for about 1 month ;) ) then I've had a history with OS's. XP is by far the most reliable - providing you do things properly then there is generally no problem.
If you are completely just after something that you are not going to fiddle with then - no problems. If you are likely to uninstall...
Advantages: Many features, reliable, OEM version is priced well. Disadvantages: Vista is out, DX10 not supported (not currently an issue)
...Windows XP is the most commonly used version of Microsofts popular Windows operating system or OS. It is feature packed and has low requirements so it will run on most PCs.
The Look
Microsoft has really jazzed Windows XP up compared to the previous dull grey looks of Windows 2000. As soon as you boot into the Windows interface you will be greeted with a friendly blue Welcome screen with the colourful new Windows logo. To begin you simply click your username, which will be displayed along with a little picture of your choice, you can pick from a car, frog to a cute dog or add your own picture if you prefer. Once you have entered your password and clicked the green enter button you will be taken to the new Windows Desktop. Here the new look is also in full effect as we get a new blue Taskbar with a bright green Start button, along...
Advantages: Excellent multimedia functionality Disadvantages: Incompatible drivers, software and hardware
...When Microsoft built it’s first operating system over 15 years ago, I sometimes wonder if, even in their wildest dreams, they thought it would become such a market force and the main o/s to be used on the majority of the world’s computers.
Yet, today they are producing the next generation of operating system. One for the future that can interact with all modern media types and formats as well as combining the retro engineering needed to make programs of yesteryear work correctly.
However, being a user of both of their current up to date systems, im not totally convinced that even they are on top of the diverse and sometimes incompatible world of mixed technologies.
Im going to talk here about Windows XP.
You have probably got this installed at home or at least heard about it if you have bought your computer within...
Advantages: Easy to use, Main operating system, Great help available Disadvantages: Prone to viruses, still some bugs
...Windows XP, my one and only ever operating system! I have tried Mac and tried Vista on other computers, and i don't think they compare to XP! Vista is trying to be an Apple product, and i don't think you can enjoy a mac after years of Microsoft!!! I love all the hidden features of it and trying to figure stuff out with it! Admittedly its a very dated OS nowadays but millions of computers still use it! It's a powerful operating system and it's good at what it does! Fair enough there are bugs in it still that need to be eliminated, and it is prone to viruses unlike an Apple Macintosh but i think what XP needs more than anything is a second release, exactly how it is but with all the bugs eliminated! XP2 =] Because no amount of Special Packet updates can fix an operating system! It needs to be independently and professionally improved...
Advantages: Slighty more secure, everything is made to work on it Disadvantages: Its windows, unstable.
...Firstly, and to avoid any confusion I will explain in brief terms what a service pack is and why it is necessary.
Whether it is down to bad testing, or a very limited time, Microsoft seem to have always had the problem of bringing out software before it was due. Example of this can be seen everywhere, and not just with the Operating Systems, in software as well, they always seem to leave programs half finished and add little bits and bobs back into them whenever the mood takes them. It is with this in mind that we see the complete necessity for service packs, they are basically updates en mass. Unless I am very much mistaken SP 2 was designed mainly to combat some security issues that had been found with the previous version of XP.
A problem arose with many people when they updated thier exsisting XP with this new service pack...
Advantages: Great new feel, built in firewall, virus protection & automatic updates Disadvantages: Slow at times, hackers target it
...Microsoft's new operating system, Windows XP, has many new features from previous operating systems, including 98, 2000 (ME) and 95. It has a new design, added security and can support more software than ever before.
--- Design ---
As many users will know, Windows XP has a new look. I prefer this look, and even if it may seem unusual to you at first, you soon adapt to the rounded edges, colour schemes and layout of the system.
--- Security ---
With the addition of Service Pack 2 (SP2), there are now many features which protect you from viruses and hackers, including Windows Firewall, Virus Protection and Automatic Updates, which make sure that you are ready for any hacks and viruses.
Unfortunately, hackers do now target Windows XP, so it is ideal to buy an anti-virus program, such as Norton Antivirus, and get a firewall, such...
Advantages: Faster and better looking operating system that is easy to repair/resore Disadvantages: poor driver and software support, unsurity on security
...Is your system compatable? Before purchasing Windows XP upgrade I suggest you read on...
I had just finished building my new P.C. around an Athlon 1.4 when I realised that my new cordless keyboard and mouse was not compatable with my version of windows 98, I decided my new monitor would look better if I installed the new Windows XP update....what an expensive mistake....All of the hardware was brand new except the CD-RW which was 4 months old. The update installed with ease and to my delight the keyboard and mouse drivers were found by windows and were now working fine.... then I realised I had problems. I tried to connect to the internet but my USB modem would not work, after re-installing it's driver and playing around with the settings I gave up and intalled the old PCI modem from my old computer, this worked fine. I connected...
Advantages: it is fast and realiable and safe. Disadvantages: none yet.
...Most of us will have heard of Microsoft, wether it is from playing there games, to using there operating system, and we may as well say, every pc you buy in any shop in the high street now adays has a Microsoft operating system installed in it.
we have gone from the very very old 3.1 Windows version, upto windows 95, through windows 98, upgrading to windows 98se, and them windows millenium edition, and we are now at windows xp.
i am guessing that all home personal computers will have Microsoft xp - Home Edition installed on it, so i am guessing you know what this operating system is. it is basically what makes your pc operational, as in software terms, because without a os, or Operating System, your pc would just sit there idel, twiddling its thumbs and fingers.
So Windows xp is one of the latest operating systems around, there...
Advantages: versatile keyboard useful for both studio and live work, Disadvantages: User / Preset switching manual not auto
...I bought my XP10 about 5 years ago and it has been a great keyboard for both studio recording and live performance.
At the time I bought it the price was some £650 and it was great value for money, when compared to the O1/W at just over £1000.
It is a 5 octave keyboard with the keys being touch sensitive and functioning very well.
The unit has 127 User selected voices and a further 127 Preset voices, operational over 16 MIDI channels.
It also has pitch bend control.
When linked to a Sequencer program there is a useful switch on the keyboard that can control the stop / start of the computer.
The keyboard is not a workstation so does not have a built in sequencer. The window which shows the display is not backlit so that causes a problem when gigging - you have to be certain that all voices being used are set before...

Review of Roland XP-10
Advantages: user friendly for the inexperienced Disadvantages: user friendly to a fault. hidden away applications
...One of my friends recently bought a new laptop. As they thought i knew a fair bit about computers, they asked me to help set up an internet account and show them the basics of how windows works. Having got win 98 on my two computers, i thought this should be reasonably easy. However, i got a shock when i turned their computer on.
I realise that, with the large number of newcomers to the PC world, microsoft have opted for user friendliness. The problem is that windows XP is user friendly to a fault.
It took me a long time to find some applications on the control panel as some of the things (like modem etc.) where hidden away in a tiny section when they could have used the old and, correct me if i'm wrong, unproblematic, system of icons. I was not impressed by the grouping of options in this section of XP, having had to go through...
