Roses are back in the garden

Advantages: Repeat flowering, wonderful scents
Disadvantages: Hard to choose which one to buy

...Roses are out of fashion. They're diseased, they're boring, they're hard work and they don't smell anymore. Oh no, no. You're so wrong. Things have moved on since the sixties. Buy yourself a rose bush. Not just any sort. Make sure it's an English Rose. Go to any good garden centre and ask to be shown the roses. There are many growers but I always grow roses from David Austin so these are the type I shall tell you about. These roses are bred so that they not only look beautiful but flower almost repeatedly throughout the season. They all have the scent and the appearance of older roses. They all seem far more disease resistant than some of the older varieties. I've grown roses sucessfully on very heavy clay soil although the soil in my present garden is a little better. Review of English Rose

This album is definitely mightly like this English-Irish rose.

Advantages: Really juxtaposed and edgy.Eerie and romantic,Lyrically poetic in a Ted Hughes kinda way.
Disadvantages: I only wish I could smell this album.

...Mighty Like A Rose (1991) is probably the sexiest of Costello's albums, especially with songs like "After The Fall", which has a really pretty Spanish guitar floating through the eerie smoothness of this haunting song. With lyrics like 'the ceiling was festooned with phosporous stars', Costello seduces his audience effortlessly. In this song (my favourite on this album) he reminds me a little of Nick Cave and my knees certainly quiver to think of my top two guys to have a threesome with! The most amazing thing about this album actually, is how diverse it can be. The above song as compared to "Playboy to a man", is world away. This song is more traditional Costello with the rocky fast paced feel and wailing rocky screaching vocals. Not quite a bunch of roses : Cadbury's Roses

Advantages: Nice chocolate, a couple of good fillings

Advantages: great entertainment and side splitting comedy

Johnny English, (played by Rowan Atkinson both on the adverts and this movie) is a British secret service member, spoofing the likes of James Bond. Unfortunately, he is as competent as Inspector Jacques Clouseau (from the Pink Panther films) which does lead him into some tricky situations. His partner, Bough, pronounced 'Boff', (played by Ben Miller) is the silent hero of the movie, always allowing Johnny to take full credit...

  Madonna's Bedtime Stories

Advantages: Beautiful illustrations, little girls will like it

...I used to be a huge fan of Madonna. At one point in the 1980s, when I was living with my parents, I had every inch of my bedroom walls covered with pictures and posters of her. Although my interest in her has waned over the years, I am still interested in her, so when I heard she had written a children’s book, I decided I’d like to buy it. My middle daughter expressed an interest in it, so it appeared in her Christmas stocking. The English Roses is a beautiful looking book. It is hardback, large format and has a wonderful front and back cover featuring little girls who look rather like those Bratz dolls or the My Scene ones that are very popular at the moment. The illustrations are by Jeffrey Fulvimari and are the thing you notice most about the book, once you get past the idea that it was Madonna who wrote the story. I...

Advantages: It was very funny
Disadvantages: Story, acting, plot etc

...Although I probably ought to have been revising, one of our tutors told us to take at least a whole day off a week. So a couple of weeks ago, I put impending Finals out of my mind, and spent a constructive Saturday (writing music reviews, playing pool, punting, watching a mate's band play Exeter's 'party in the park', Pizza Hut, cinema, George & Davies ice cream and a friends for relatively late night G&T and chat). So that's where Johnny English fits in to my revision schedule... The choice was X Men 2, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days and Johnny English, and you'll know by now which we chose... I knew it was a Bond-esque spy spoof starring Rowan Atkinson, but that was about it. Why are they called Roses?

Advantages: Lovely cadbury chocolate

...Before Christmas several shops had offers for tins of chocolates and I bought a big tin of Cadbury Roses. We are still digging into them but I have sampled them all, even the ones I dislike! My tin contained 1.05kg, I do wish I had counted how many chocolates were in the tin, but on second thoughts I don't want to know how many we have consumed although they have been shared with friends and family! Best before date is April 2009, I was surprised to see the contents are stamped on the base although different chocolates could be replaced if necessary. There is information on the makers Cadbury Trebor Bassett and contact details, if you need to complain. Although it does say there could be a white bloom if the chocolates have been left in the sun or exposed to heat, which is harmless. There is a list of ingredients and a note that Soya...

Price and Availability Speaking of getting your money's worth...the Bourjois Khôl & Contour eye-liner pencil retails at £4.20 at Boots. However, getting your hand on the Rose Fantaisiste shade could prove tricky, since it's not available on the Boots website. I can't say whether or not it is still available in store, as I haven't had any reason to look out for it since I bought it. I've had mine for over a year now and it's still going strong. If you're interested in other shades, the Boots website has 7 different shades (albeit it two different black shades and their new, double-ended black and white Khôl Contour pencil).
