Advantages: Enjoyable, funny, light-hearted, different from other romantic comedies Disadvantages: If you dont like Jim Carrey you wont enjoy it!
...Yes Man is a comedy starring Jim Carrey. The film is based on a book by Danny Wallace and basically tells the story of a man who starts to say ?Yes? to every opportunity that comes his way regardless of what it is. Interestingly enough Danny Wallace makes a little appearance sitting at the bar, I knew it was him as I had seen him on Richard and Judy some time ago talking about his book and his experiences of deciding to say yes to every opportunity.
The main character in the film is Carl Allen who is played by Jim Carrey. Carl is a bit of a miserable man, he says no to everything at work and in his personal life. His friends are starting to give up on him because he wont go out with them and makes up lame excuses about why he cant meet them. Then Carl meets an old friend who persuades him to come along to a meeting. Here at this...

Review of Yes Man
Advantages: It ends eventually Disadvantages: The crude scenes, swearing
...I've just had the misfortune of watching Yes Man, and you can probably guess that I was really disappointed.
Synopsis
Carl is a bank clerk in charge of approving or denying loans most of which he denies. After separating from his wife, he has withdrawn into his shell and no longer enjoys the company of his friends. In short he's turned into a grumpy old man, that is until he runs into an old friend whilst he's eating his lunch. His friends tells him of a seminar that's coming up in a few days, which gas changed his life for the better.
The concept is simple, you can improve your life by saying 'yes'. And that's what Carl decides to do, but it's not as easy as it sounds, there are somethings you just want to say no to, the trouble is bad things happen when Carl says no.

Jim Carrey as Carl Allen

Carl Allen is an unhappy man who shies away from alot of things, preferring to spend time with himself. His friend often calls him to invite him out with friends for the night but he wants to avoid running into his ex-wife so he does't take the calls. One day, he's told about a personal development program, which he attends a local seminar on, where they explain that in order to move on and become a happier and more positive person, you have to say yes and not no and good things will come from it. He's quite sceptical at first but his friend encourages him to follow through and it doesn't take long before a number of random events takes place which leads to good things happening in his life, in his personal and work life. Things are looking up for Carl but can it...

Review of Yes Man
Advantages: Quirky, endearing performances. Restrained Carrey Disadvantages: Random gross-out moments are misplaced.
...Carl is a man who doesn't say "yes" to much. As a result he has managed to be rejected for promotion and has become isolated from friends as he lets them down time after time. Endless DVD nights on his own are commonplace and his life becomes more tragic by the minute. However, a chance meeting with an old friend may well change all that as Carl is about to become the man who likes to say yes!
"Yes Man" is massively different from what I was expecting. The concept is almost a verbatim copy of Jim Carrey's previous film "Liar Liar" and I was expecting more of the same. However, refreshingly this is a more subtle affair from that rubber-faced slapstick comedy. A gentile romantic-comedy, "Yes Man" contains a surprisingly subdued Carrey and is better for it. Carl's self-loathing and pity is clear from the outset and this makes him...

Review of Yes Man
...Jim Carrey stars as Carl Allen, a disenchanted loan account manager whose negativity deeply restricts his life. After a chance encounter with an old friend, he embarks on a challenge to say yes to everything for a whole year; this brings a mixture of highs and lows, including a chance encounter with Allison, an alluring woman.
From the moment I saw this advertised in the bus-stop, I knew I had to see it; maybe it was because it was the festive season, but childhood memories of Jim Carrey induced laughter filled my brain, and I wanted more. I read that many felt the story was a rip-off of 'Liar Liar', but it's been ten years since I've seen that film, and I don't remember it much at all, so it didn't effect my experience of the film.
First off, this is a feel good film, full of comedy and laughter. The overwhelming message...

Review of Yes Man
Advantages: The extremely good supporting cast Disadvantages: The very unfunny past his prime Carrey
...Take the unfunny Jim Carrey playing a bank finance officer called Carl who has just been overlooked for promotion and tries to avoid his friends & neighbours, his life is shown to be dull and unfulfilling until a chance meeting with an old friend who persuades him to go to a positive affirmation seminar (run by Terrance Stamp). He then decides he will say yes to every question he is asked and the alledged hilarity ensues.
To show how great saying yes is it leads to things like him being promoted for agreeing to work a Saturday, his relationship with his friends improves and he even has sex with one of his neighbours (she's a senior citizen though). It improves his social life (he takes a ton of classes to learn and try things) and goes to a gig where he meets Alison, a girl who had helped him on his 1st day of saying yes (played by...

Review of Yes Man
Advantages: witty, inspirational, amusing Disadvantages: annoying use of italics
...Yes Man by Danny Wallace is the book on which the recent Jim Carey film was (very) loosely based. I'll be honest, I watched the film first and I had a mild inclination to then read the book. I was intrigued by the philosophy to the point where I contemplated trying it out for a week (saying "Yes" to anything and everything), if I was less lazy and more confident I would have. Perhaps I still will. When I noticed a friend at work was reading the book I asked if I could borrow it. He's a very slow reader, so I had to wait as the weeks ticked by, but finally he leant it to me a week or so ago. It's taken priority over my other books so I can return it to him quickly. It's easy reading, there was no need for me to worry.
The first thing to say is the book is very different to the film. As is usually the case with book to film transfers I...
Advantages: Fun, easy to watch and not too silly acting from Jim Carrey Disadvantages: None
...Another one of my marathon cinema sessions saw me seeing 'Yes Man' which is Jim Carrey's latest offering. I was sceptical as to whether it would be any good as really is it not just the same kind of concept as his older film Liar Liar? Well, it seemed that was the choice of film in our group that most of us could agree on and being told by another who had previously seen it that it was actually pretty good I was happy to take the risk!
The film was written by Nicholas Stoller and Jarrad Paul and directed by Peyton Reed.
The plot:
Carl is still very much cut up about his break up with his Ex-girlfriend Stephanie. Combined with the fact that he seems to be going nowhere in life and tends to want to just be on his own in his flat watching DVD's rather than out drinking with his mates where he could potentially bump into his ex...

Review of Yes Man
Advantages: Great comic performance for Norm Disadvantages: Don't expect it to be like the book
...I wanted to see this film as soon as it came out. I waited till I had finished the book but I need not have bothered as the content of the book in the end bore little resemblance to the film.
I like Jim Carrey (more in his serious roles) and so was eagerly awaiting the film. Apart from a few tenuous links, the film could have almost stood on its own away from the book even to the point of changing names of lead characters to ones American audiences would be more familiar with. I think this sadly says more about America in general than Hollywood.
As an entertainment piece, the film flows nicely and is funny in places. The start of the show for me was Carl's geeky boss, Norm, who has some very funny dialogue.
For anyone who does not know the story is based around Carl, a miserable bank loan officer, who is told to say yes more...

Review of Yes Man
Advantages: Very funny in parts Disadvantages: Slight Maitreya pre-occupation
...As a fan of Tony Hawks, it was probably only a matter of time before I ended up delving into the strange world of Danny Wallace. I'd heard of the rather strange things he'd got up to with his friend Dave Gorman without ever seeing the TV series or reading the books and thought that they would be an ideal way of filling the time before the next Tony Hawks book.
The set up for "Yes Man" is a bit more random than with Tony Hawks' adventures, as the latter tends to accept a bet from his friends. Danny Wallace, however, happened to end up sitting next to some random guy on a bus who advised him to "Say Yes More". Danny, realising that his life had become less exciting in recent times thanks to his ability to turn down invites to more or less anything, took him at face value.
What follows is Danny's story of events over the months...
