York Minster

Advantages: Size And Amazing Architecture
Disadvantages: Foundations where a bit scary for me

...I love york and whenever possible go for a weekend. Whilst there I always visit York Minster and usually stay in an Inn a few feet away directly facing the Minster. The first thing that strikes you is the size of it and the fabulous architecture (it's over 500 feet wide and has a central tower almost 200 feet high). Visitors come from all over the world to admire York Minster Cathedral. Whilst you are looking around the Minster bear in mind it took over 250 years to complete and the only devices they had then were simple levers, pulleys and hoists. Lots of Masons and Carpenters spent their entire working lives just helping to construct York Minster. In the year 306A.D. Constantine was proclaimed Emperor in a ceremony which took place on the sight of the future Minister, there is a statue of him looking very Imperial outside...

York's magnificent Minster

Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Admission charges

...Churches come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes, but they don't come much bigger than York Minster. York Minster is the seat of the Archbishop of York, which is the second most prominent seat within the Church of England, after the Archbishop of Canterbury. It is therefore not too surprising to find that the Archbishop of York's official seat is very grand, in fact York Minster is the second largest Gothic Cathedral in Europe, and only the magnificent Kölner Dom, known as Cologne Cathedral to us Brits is bigger. Anyone that has been to the historic city of York can not have failed to see its Minster, it dominates and the town and as the land around here is so flat it can be seen from many miles around. Dating from 1220 York Minster has the official title of The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York. It...

York Minster-the heart and soul of York

Advantages: magnificent architecture reflecting over a thousand years of history and religion.
Disadvantages: none that I can see.

...impressed with the beauty of the Minster, in particular the windows I mentioned earlier, the Screen and the Nave. In my inexperienced opinion York Minster and Westminster Abbey are of equal magnificence. However when I was there in the late night I came across the visit of the Relics of St Thérèse of Lisieux. Mingling with the thousand visitors and pilgrims in the spacious and bright palace I was really fascinated by the power of religion. It became the clearest memory of my trip to the Minster and the city of York. Summary: A vital medieval cathedral strongly impressed me. PS. Minster Hotel

Advantages: Very close to centre. Lovely staff and atmosphere
Disadvantages: Can get quite expensive, some rooms are fairly small

...The Minster Hotel in York is situated on Bootham and is literally no more than a 5 minute walk down a staright road from the city centre. It is a friendly, welcoming place to stay. My boyfriend and I were looking to stay in another hotel in York, but as this particular weekend was a race weekend, many hotels were fully booked and in high demand. My sister in law recommended this one to me, and we were able to stay here for 3 nights earlier this year in July. We were very pleased with our stay. Although check in wasn\'t normally until 3pm, we were allocated our room atleast an hour and a half earlier than would of been allowed, which was great as we had arrived in York alot sooner than we expected. On arrival we were asked for our name, whether we wanted to order a morning paper, and for our car registration. The hotel has its own...

A peaceful day out

Advantages: Lots to see
Disadvantages: Not for everyone

...York Minster is a Christian church in York. It was at one point a Catholic church, but became part of the Church of England after Henry VIII broke away from the church way back in 1534. As well as being a tourist attraction this is also a working church with regular Christian masses, it is also a Cathedral, which means it is the seat of the bishops for the York Diocese. However, you don?t have to be a Christian or attend mass to visit and enjoy the Minster. You can visit just to take in the magnificence of the building. Opening Times and Prices Taken from the website for ease. Monday - Saturday: open 9.00am (9.30am November- March); last entry 5.00pm Sunday: 12.00 noon - 3.45pm No sightseeing on Good Friday and Easter Sunday or on Sundays before 12.00 noon Entry to the Minster Adult: £6.00 Senior (60...

Southwell Minster, Nottinghamshire

Advantages: A beautiful old church, free admission
Disadvantages: Not for everyone's taste

...Southwell (pronounced Suthall) is a picturesque little village in Nottinghamshire, close to the Lincolnshire border. It is famous as the place where the Bramley Apple originated and it is also home to The Workhouse, Britains best preserved example of a Victorian Workhouse, which is now in the care of the National Trust. Southwell's most famous attraction is however it's church. Southwell Minster has held Cathedral status since 1884 but the church itself predates that by almost 1,000 years. It is officially known as Cathedral and Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was in the year 956AD that construction of the present church began although an earlier church, possibly on the same site has existed since 627AD. The Doomsday Book of 1068 describes the "Archbishops Manor" in great detail but in 1108 the Norman's largely...

Doncaster's Minster Church

Advantages: Free to visit, lots of history
Disadvantages: Limited opening hours

...of the most prominent architects of the time, Sir George Gilbert Scott. Following its opening in 1858 it was described by the famous English poet, Sir John Betjeman as "Victorian Gothic at its very best". Scott designed several other parish churches, including some others quite close to here, but of them all this is the most Cathedral like, with a square bell tower that rises to almost 40 metres above the ground. The clock on the tower was designed by Dent, who is perhaps most famous for designing the clock of the Palace of Westminster in London that is now more commonly referred to as "Big Ben". One of the main treasures from the interior of the church was an example of a Harris organ dating from 1740. This was the second largest example of its kind in England, second only to that at York Minster but it was sadly damaged by the fire of 1853...

How did this place get THREE stars?

Advantages: The location - near the city walls
Disadvantages: The service, food, room, etc.

...For my birthday last year Dave decided to arrange a weekend in York for me. I really needed a break as I am full time carer to mom who has dementia so we chose a really nice hotel (or so we thought) and booked in for the weekend. The hotel has a website at www.minsterhotel.co.uk and, if you take a look, you'll see it looks like an ideal choice of venue - looks good, has excellent facilities and is close to York. I found out after we had returned home that Dave had also sent an e mail to the hotel before we went explaining my situation and that a weekend break was a very rare treat for me and asking if they could make sure things were just right for me - bless him! We arrived on Friday evening having found the hotel easily. It is on Bootham which is the main road leading into York, through Bootham Bar and directly to York Minster...

What a view

Advantages: historical, beautiful sights and views
Disadvantages: Can be tiring climbing to the top of that tower

...I lived in York for many years and always remember visiting York Minster when I was allowed into the town centre to spend my pocket money. I would spend many hours walking around taking in all the details I could. There are so many sights to see that I couldn't possibly give every detail in this review. Here are a few of my favourite places inside this beautiful Gothic style building The St William Window ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This a beautiful window near the north transept showing the life and work of St William. It has 100 stained glass panels with fantastic colours. The light shining through them is a sight to see. The Undercroft ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here you will find skeletons of buildings that were on the site of the Minster before it was built. These date back to Roman times when the Romans used York, then called Eboracum...

Rotherham's Minster Church of All Saints!

Advantages: Lots of History
Disadvantages: None

...Rotherham?s largest Church is known as the Rotherham Minster and dominates the Centre of this South Yorkshire Town. Until recently this Church, which is as large as many Cathedrals, was known as All Saints Parish Church. This change in name was to reflect its importance as a Church in the region and also marked the culmination of a major restoration project. The Town of Rotherham grew up along the banks of where the River Don and the River Rother meet. This land along the River?s bank was flat and ideal for the early settlements, but it was prone to flooding. The Saxons, who built the first Church here, therefore chose a site on top of a mound well away from the floodplains of both the River Don and River Rother. This early Saxon Church was built in the year 937 AD and stood on the same site as the present day Church. Since this...
