A little bit of peace in the middle of York
Review of Treasurer's House, York by
KarenIngham
Advantages: Very interesting, lots to see, great cafe, beautiful garden
Disadvantages: None
...I went to visit the Treasurer's House on a rainy day in York, mainly to get out of the rain. I didn't have anywhere near enough time to see everything in the house, as I had arranged to meet family afterwards. I will definitely be going back.
The Treasurer's House is a 17th and 18th century mansion house in the centre of York, just round the corner from the York Minster. It was originally home to the treasurers of York and was built on a Roman road. It was bought by wealthy local industrialist Frank Green and restored between 1897 and 1930. It was the first house ever to be given to the National Trust complete with a significant collection.
The house is a mixture of period settings, incorporating features from different historical periods, all created by one man. Each room is decorated in a different historic style. Also...

Comfortable old fashin guest house
Review of Pens-o York House, Lisbon by
Bestway
Advantages: Decoration and food
Disadvantages: Out of center and main shopping areas.
...This guest house is located about 25 to 30 min. far from city center (by taxi) but its location has some advantages. Not far you may find the Old Art Museum and district of Lapa - one of the most elegant districts in town. 10 min walking you can also find The Docks, recentely rebuilded zone on river bord, plenty of restaurants, bars, coffee houses and other eat/drink locations.
York House is a small romantic place, with garden and nice views over the town and river. Its decoration is discret but elegant - old fashion - with a very special atmosphere. The rooms are comfortable and some have very nice views. The food is delicious - even famous in certain gastronomic circles - and the service also good. This hotel is ideal for medium/long stays (more than a week) and depending on your preferences can also give you a familiar ambiance....

Yorkshire lass' Guide to York
Review of York in General by
elsmc
Advantages: Beautiful architecture, lots of culture, good pubs, loads to do, nice bars
Disadvantages: Very crowded in summer, can be v.rough at night, not great for clubbing
..., and is well worth going on - it is 54 metres high (almost as high as the Minster but without the stairs!) and on a sunny day, you get amazing views over York. Adults go for £6, children for £4. You can also book a private pod for £44, or a VIP pod with a glass of champagne for £65 (this would be great for a special occasion, I'm trying to think of excuse to do that!)
Castle Museum
Another fantastic, entertaining interactive museum, attractions include reconstructed Victorian and Edwardian street scenes, (with a super-cute, old-fashioned sweet shop and Post Office!) The displays include beautiful Victorian dolls houses, a chocolate exhibit, and a Saxon helmet uncovered in the Jorvik dig, (which was almost crushed by a digger!) A good all-round family attraction.

New York City
Review of New York City by
gard
Advantages: A lot to see & do, has something to offer for everyone
Disadvantages: Too much to see and do, can be exhausting, expensive hotels
...is supposed to symbolize Wall Street) near the old Custom house. We did of course walk down Wall Street and took a look at the New York Stock Exchange but it wasn't easy to get a closer look. The place looked pretty fortified with cops in full combat equipment. We also walked over to the so-called Ground Zero where the Word Trade Center used to be. Right now it is just a gaping hole in the ground so there is not really much to see there.There were some posters on the fence around the area which gave information about the WTC complex.
Buildings of New York
There are of course many great buildings around New York that you see a lot on film and TV and I just want to mention a couple of them. The first is Grand Central Station. It is squeezed in between skyscrapers but when you get inside it you can see how beautiful it really is. According...

The New York Odyssey
Review of New York: A Mix Odyssey (Mixed By Armand Van Helden) - Various Artists by
x_helix_x
Advantages: great mix
Disadvantages: none
..."This is an adventure into that downtown New York City vibe" ~ Armand Van Helden
For me Armand Van Helden is a dance music legend, as a child of the nineties I grew up listening to his house and techno classics. He is thee man. This the guy responsible for making Tori Amos "Professional Widow" and The Sneeker Pimps "Spin Spin Sugar" massive hits. As well as producing some damn fine house records himself such as "You Don't Know Me" and "The Funk Phenomena". His artist albums have never failed to impress; he always tries something new and inventive. As a DJ he is a master of the decks with all the tricks up his sleeve, he can mix everything thing from house and techno to hiphop and ragga. If he's playing at a club he's still sure to be the hottest ticket in town.
Armand started DJ-ing at the age of 15, he spent a lot of his childhood...

Royal York Hotel, York
Review of The Royal York, York by
sharkel
Advantages: Beautiful surroundings, leisure faclities
Disadvantages: slightly expensive
...My partner and I stayed in this hotel for two nights very recently. We had originally booked into the York Ibis but I decided to book this hotel as a surprise for him and cancel the Ibis - and I'm glad I did. I researched quite a few hotels in York but this one seemed to have the grandeur, facilities and central location I was looking for - and it had a spa!
Originally named the Royal Station Hotel, the hotel was opened in the 1878 and was owned by the Northeastern Railway Company, the purpose of the hotel being to disguise the train station which is behind it. Although named the Royal Hotel, no member of royalty has actually stayed here. The hotel is built on an old Roman cemetery and there have been excavations, uncovering roman remains.
~~~First Impressions~~~
Upon driving into the car park of this beautiful Victorian...
Thom Yorke And His Laptop
Review of The Eraser - Thom Yorke by
tehfincheh
Advantages: Moments of brilliance, original inventive sound.
Disadvantages: Extremely unaccessible for a casual listener
...beneath the houses of parliament with hands clasped over his ears at the workings of the world. The Eraser speaks loud and clear with a vicious call for action against global warming, nucleur disarmament and even the notorious David Kelly incident.
Without sounding like a snotty rebel on a payback mission, Yorke deflects his fears to the listener over the course of nine wishful songs which only the most morbidly curious could even think about leaving on repeat. It should be the most depressing album Yorke has ever penned. But for some reason, it's strangely uplifting. Hypnotic, perhaps.
||| The Track Listing |||
1. The Eraser - 8/10 - (The more you try to erase me / The more that i appear )
A broken ensemble of piano chords introduce us to Thom's new play thing, swiftly followed by a scuppered electronic beat which fizzes...
York is a city that is impossible to hate
Review of York in General by
Ohajiki
Advantages: Friendly, quirky, excellent bars and restaurants and attractions that will suit everyone.
Disadvantages: Other people know this too and come in their hundreds
...shopping areas and provide a pleasant respite to the shopping rush. The services are also regular at the Minster and it's adjoining churches
- Scattered across the city too are various styles of architecture from all time periods, from the famous medieval street The Shambles to Tudor style houses that are situated near to the Minster to the Georgian magnificence of the Castle Museum and the Mayor's residence.
- Included in this also are the three bridges in the centre of York that cross the famously flooding River Ouse.
Attractions
---------------------------
York has a wonderful amount fo attractions going on and is a surprisingly dynamic city. Here is a taster of some of the things which I have actual experience of.
- Ghost walks, bags of fun to do in a group as the storytellers are very dramatic in their story telling and it's a good...
Yay for York
Review of York University by
87degrees
Advantages: Brilliant societies, great teaching
Disadvantages: 60's concrete block buildings
...ludicrously expensive than most other cinemas. There's also the Vue cinema, but that's a little out of town. You can get there on the number 6 bus, but it takes a fairly roundabout route.
Compared to a lot of other cities, York is safe. It has a relatively low crime rate. Even the bad areas, such as Tang Hall, are a lot better than bad areas in other parts of the country.
~ Housing ~
First year accomodation is on campus and organised by the uni. Depending on your college (Halifax tend to have room) you can apply to stay on college in your second and third year. In most colleges, there aren't many rooms available. Some third years get a place, most don't.
International students get to stay on campus if they want to with no difficulty at all.
Almost everyone in their second year lives off campus. The university have a list...
York - The home of the white rose
Review of York in General by
Phil0205
Advantages: Lots to do for tourists
Disadvantages: Very Busy in summer months
...olde York, if you were charged of a crime, you went to court. Plead guilty and you died relatively painlessly, usually by hanging or "off with the head". Plead not guilty, and you got tortured until you either confessed, or until the torturer gets bored and killed you anyway!!! £8.50 for an adult, but well worth a visit.
Other places of Interest
York Minster. The tallest building in York. Pay a small amount and you can climb the stairs to the top of the tower for an excellent view over the city and beyond. Well worth a visit for a real piece of Yorks History.
Stonegate. Just outside the Minster. One of Yorks oldest streets. Very narrow, lots of tourist shops.
The Shambles. Buildings overhanging. It's almost possible to climb out of one upstairs window and into the window of the house opposite...
