Just off for a quick run!

Advantages: able to exercise at home, needs small space
Disadvantages: none

...Ever since the birth of my youngest daughter almost three years ago I seem to have been fighting a battle to lose weight - at times I seem to be winning and at others it's more like I'm losing, but one of the things that definitely seems to have helped was buying my York Pacer foldable treadmill. I used to be a bit of a gym addict, but with two young children I have neither the time nor the energy to spend evenings at the gym any more! In a moment of desperation, I said to my husband a couple of years ago 'If I can't go to the gym - why not bring the gym to me!' Well it seemed a good idea but of course wasn't practical in terms of space but we did work out that we probably had room for a tredmill! I did a bit or research and discovered that the York Pacer ws available at a cost of £300! This might seem quite expensive, but when I...

All I need now is willpower

Advantages: Exercise at home
Disadvantages: Very big machine, noisy

...Well I did it - I bought myself a treadmill. As an ex-member of a fitness club I went for one of the bigger machines in the York range so that I had the option to run, the smaller ones will only reach a fast walking pace. The average walking speed reckons to be 6 - 7kph and this will reach 16kph (though not with me on it!) The machine cost £500 and came with a computer showing distance, speed, calorie counter and time with another display which shows your heart rate should you choose to plug in the chest strap provided. It has a scary looking but reasonably easy to follow installation and 'how to use' manual with lots of pictures to illustrate the assembly instructions - oh, and not forgetting the plastic water bottle. You are able to set either calorie, distance or time as your perimeter and the speed may be altered faster or slower...

York Minster

Advantages: Size And Amazing Architecture
Disadvantages: Foundations where a bit scary for me

...I love york and whenever possible go for a weekend. Whilst there I always visit York Minster and usually stay in an Inn a few feet away directly facing the Minster. The first thing that strikes you is the size of it and the fabulous architecture (it's over 500 feet wide and has a central tower almost 200 feet high). Visitors come from all over the world to admire York Minster Cathedral. Whilst you are looking around the Minster bear in mind it took over 250 years to complete and the only devices they had then were simple levers, pulleys and hoists. Lots of Masons and Carpenters spent their entire working lives just helping to construct York Minster. In the year 306A.D. Constantine was proclaimed Emperor in a ceremony which took place on the sight of the future Minister, there is a statue of him looking very Imperial outside...

York's magnificent Minster

Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Admission charges

...Churches come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes, but they don't come much bigger than York Minster. York Minster is the seat of the Archbishop of York, which is the second most prominent seat within the Church of England, after the Archbishop of Canterbury. It is therefore not too surprising to find that the Archbishop of York's official seat is very grand, in fact York Minster is the second largest Gothic Cathedral in Europe, and only the magnificent Kölner Dom, known as Cologne Cathedral to us Brits is bigger. Anyone that has been to the historic city of York can not have failed to see its Minster, it dominates and the town and as the land around here is so flat it can be seen from many miles around. Dating from 1220 York Minster has the official title of The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York. It...

Royal York Hotel, York

Advantages: Beautiful surroundings, leisure faclities
Disadvantages: slightly expensive

...My partner and I stayed in this hotel for two nights very recently. We had originally booked into the York Ibis but I decided to book this hotel as a surprise for him and cancel the Ibis - and I'm glad I did. I researched quite a few hotels in York but this one seemed to have the grandeur, facilities and central location I was looking for - and it had a spa! Originally named the Royal Station Hotel, the hotel was opened in the 1878 and was owned by the Northeastern Railway Company, the purpose of the hotel being to disguise the train station which is behind it. Although named the Royal Hotel, no member of royalty has actually stayed here. The hotel is built on an old Roman cemetery and there have been excavations, uncovering roman remains. ~~~First Impressions~~~ Upon driving into the car park of this beautiful Victorian...

5 stars for the 4 star Royal York hotel

Advantages: Great location, every need taken care of
Disadvantages: Price!

...I recently had a chance to stay at this rather lovely 4 star hotel in York. My husband is involved with a medical company and for their AGM this year they stayed at The Royal York with a meal at the nearby (if you call 40 minuets on a coach) Castle Howard. All very posh and normally way above my means of expense (for the general person attending this function think doctor, surgeon, well paid researcher), however as hubby does work for them they paid for most of the trip (we had to pay £26 in total, what a great deal!). Arrival -------- The hotel is situated next to York train station and has a large car park so it?s convenient to drive too. The hotel is about 5 minuets walk away from the centre of York where there are loads of shops from the normal high street chains to antique and art shops. You are met at reception by...

Diamond review  Yay for York

Advantages: Brilliant societies, great teaching
Disadvantages: 60's concrete block buildings

...I'm in my second year studying at York and I'm loving it. It wasn't my first choice, but I'm very happy being there. I'm enjoying the course (well, some of the lectures aren't brilliant) and the social life if great. ~ General Information ~ The university was founded in 1963 and had only 200 students. Now, there are about 10000. Chancellor- Greg Dyke Vice-Chancellor- Brian Cantor Website- www.york.ac.uk Email address for applicants- admissions@york.ac.uk for undergraduate study. clearing@york.ac.uk for those applying for undergraduate study using clearing graduate@york.ac.uk as the address suggests, for those applying for graduate study. ~ The Campus ~ York is situated on its own campus, just a little more than half an hour's walk from the centre of town and with a very good bus service. One of the things I like...

York Minster-the heart and soul of York

Advantages: magnificent architecture reflecting over a thousand years of history and religion.
Disadvantages: none that I can see.

...As the King George VI said ?The history of York is the history of England. I don?t know how right he was, but I would like to say the history of York Minster is the history of York indeed. General information York Minster is Northern Europe's largest remaining medieval church, also one of the world's great masterpieces in design and construction. Back in AD 627 York's first Minster was built to christen the Anglo Saxon King, Edwin of Northumbria. It was originally a small wooden church, and then later rebuilt to be a bigger stone one. However it was badly damaged by fire in the year 1069 during the Norman period. Around the year 1080 Normans started building a cathedral, which was completed 20 years later. It was built on the very site of the Saxon church. Incidentally near this place Constantine the Great was proclaimed...

Jorvik centre: York

Advantages: Very good attraction!!
Disadvantages: Expensive!

...The Jorvik center is if you didn't know, situated in the center of York, Yorkshire. Its one of the main attractions in the city and brings in hundreds of tourists and school visitors. The Jorvik Centre (pronounced Yorvic), is a real acheaology site, where the Vikings of York lived thousands of years ago. Its a museum with a twist though, as with "normal" museums, you walk around, you read signs and miss most things, especially if you have kids with you! But, this place is very different, when you enter, your taken into a "time machine", where you sit, and your told a short story, and a scientist takes us back in time to 975AD when the Vikings lived in York. Upon leaving the "time machine", you notice you've been transported back in time, to the old streets of York. You are then taken to a "ride", I say ride, but its not...

The York Dungeon - A Fantastic Day Out

Advantages: Enthusiastic cast; special effects; lasted a long time; small queues
Disadvantages: 'Ride' was poor; closes early; it is scary, makes you jump

...I had always been interested in 'The Dungeons'; I'd seen several TV advertisements for the dungeon in York, and after visiting their website and tapping into my sat nav how long it'd take to drive there, my partner and I discovered it'd only take us around an hour and about 20 minutes, so we decided to make the trip and go. The best part was that being a 'SKY+' subscriber, I had received a 2-for-1 voucher, so when we realised it was going to be cheaper than what we'd previously expected, it was an added bonus. GETTING TO YORK DUNGEON, AND PARKING The trusty Sat Nav got us all the way to York Dungeons, although it was quite well sign posted from the main roads. Parking was a bit of a nightmare - I had only bought cash along with me, with about £7 in change, assuming that the carpark would cost around £6 or £7 to stay...
