...I'm in my second year studying at York and I'm loving it. It wasn't my first choice, but I'm very happy being there. I'm enjoying the course (well, some of the lectures aren't brilliant) and the social life if great. ~ General Information ~ The university was founded in 1963 and had only 200 students. University of Dork (I didn't make that up!)

Advantages: Nice campus, high in league tables
Disadvantages: Small, full of academic but not so hip students!

...The University of York is renound for being known as the University of Dork in the papers, though I didn't know this prior to accepting a place! This is probably because it has been climbing the league tables and is currently seventh in the Times top universities but also won "university of the year" for 2003, so its only natural that some of the students spend more time looking in their books than looking in the mirror. GEEKS I am also pretty biased seeing as I do Maths, which is full of "geeks" where as subjects such as humanities, business courses etc are a lot more trendy nowadays and the students are slightly cooler! In a questionnaire about the university I was asked to fill in gave me the question "draw and describe a typical maths student." My response was big hair, spotty, glasses, no style whatsoever, could smell slightly...

Great fun with the girl from York

Advantages: Bangers all over the shop!!
Disadvantages: Too far away!!!

...A couple of years ago I was seeing a girl and she went to York University. Had a great time with her I dont mind saying!!! I saw a bit of york while I was there visiting her for essentials. I can highly recommend visiting the chinese restaurant in the town call the Willow. Lovely food and not too expensive for you students. I found the uni to be a bit of a dive but did not see much of it other than her room. Worth the 220 mile drive though. I got back in 2 hours and 35 minutes once but dont tell the police!!!! Mari Ana with the bangers!!! Great fun!!!...

York Minster

Advantages: Size And Amazing Architecture
Disadvantages: Foundations where a bit scary for me

...I love york and whenever possible go for a weekend. Whilst there I always visit York Minster and usually stay in an Inn a few feet away directly facing the Minster. The first thing that strikes you is the size of it and the fabulous architecture (it's over 500 feet wide and has a central tower almost 200 feet high). Visitors come from all over the world to admire York Minster Cathedral. Whilst you are looking around the Minster bear in mind it took over 250 years to complete and the only devices they had then were simple levers, pulleys and hoists. Lots of Masons and Carpenters spent their entire working lives just helping to construct York Minster. In the year 306A.D. Constantine was proclaimed Emperor in a ceremony which took place on the sight of the future Minister, there is a statue of him looking very Imperial outside...

York's magnificent Minster

Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Admission charges

Royal York Hotel, York

Advantages: Beautiful surroundings, leisure faclities
Disadvantages: slightly expensive

...My partner and I stayed in this hotel for two nights very recently. We had originally booked into the York Ibis but I decided to book this hotel as a surprise for him and cancel the Ibis - and I'm glad I did. I researched quite a few hotels in York but this one seemed to have the grandeur, facilities and central location I was looking for - and it had a spa! Originally named the Royal Station Hotel, the hotel was opened in the 1878 and was owned by the Northeastern Railway Company, the purpose of the hotel being to disguise the train station which is behind it. Although named the Royal Hotel, no member of royalty has actually stayed here. 5 stars for the 4 star Royal York hotel

Advantages: Great location, every need taken care of
Disadvantages: Price!

...I recently had a chance to stay at this rather lovely 4 star hotel in York. My husband is involved with a medical company and for their AGM this year they stayed at The Royal York with a meal at the nearby (if you call 40 minuets on a coach) Castle Howard. All very posh and normally way above my means of expense (for the general person attending this function think doctor, surgeon, well paid researcher), however as hubby does work for them they paid for most of the trip (we had to pay £26 in total, what a great deal!). It has developed rapidly over the years and continues to grow and develop now.
