South Yorkshire - A Summary In Under 1800 Words.
Review of South Yorkshire In General by
micksheff
Advantages: Lots of contrast, Plenty of attractions and history
Disadvantages: Quite Industrial in areas
...It is over a year since I suggested "South Yorkshire in General" as a product for Ciao, but despite it being added to the Product index quickly I have not, until now, been able to bring myself to the task of writing the review I originally intended.
Since no one else has taken up the challenge it would appear that it is still down to me to complete this review, and hopefully, do justice the County of my birth, where I was born and bred, and where I still live.
I have written so many individual reviews on places within the County of South Yorkshire that I felt that it would be hard to compose such a general account or not duplicate some of the things that I have written about previously. It is therefore my intention to take a slightly different approach.
South Yorkshire covers an area of 1,552 Square Kilometres making it the 38...

Yorkshire Tea - Pricey but Nicey
Review of Yorkshire Tea by
jouk04
Advantages: Yorkshire Gold is the Best
Disadvantages: overpriced
...Yorkshire tea for Yorkshire water, that is what they used to say on the advert, for Yorkshire folk, as well I think. The advert was a load of twaddle, but I must say I do like the tea, coming from Yorkshire I suppose I ought to if the advert is to be believed.
There are three varieties of Yorkshire tea, they are the ordinary Yorkshire tea, Yorkshire tea for hard water areas (anywhere south of Yorkshire maybe) and Yorkshire Gold the premium tea just that bit more special, and a bit more expensive.
The first is regular Yorkshire tea, personally I do not like it, it has no real flavour no body no after taste, fullness, you name it, its really not worth the money, and even the ordinary tea is a bit more expensive than other everyday tea bag teas like Tetley, PG tips, Ty-phoo and the like. It is disappointingly flat and un refreshing...

A Little Taste of Yorkshire That Isn't a Cow Pat
Review of Yorkshire Tea by
ChigwellChick
Advantages: A strong and comforting cuppa that makes you feel good
Disadvantages: Aftertaste, but no worse than with other teas.
...I recently received a free sample of Yorkshire tea through the post. There were 6 tea bags in the pack with the usual Yorkshire Tea livery some of us are familiar with. But are we familiar with it? I for one have never tried it, although I have often seen it on the supermarket shelves.
I have had two cups so far, so here goes with the low down:-
This tea brews extremely quickly. I always go for ippy dippy tea. You know, teabag in the mug, boiling water on top, smoosh it around a bit and then squeeze the bag against the side of the cup. Out it then comes and into the bin! I know I am not the only one; there are more of you out there!!
The first thing I noticed about this tea is that the water turned brown extremely quickly. I was in a rush, as I usually am first thing in the morning, and absolutely dying for a cuppa. I...

God's own country..and mine..Yorkshire
Review of Yorkshire (England) by
ginger59
Advantages: variety, the people, not expensive, scenery,
Disadvantages: it's quite cold sometimes!
...I am a Lancastrian by birth but have lived in Yorkshire for longer than I haven't, and both of my boys were born here so I have sort of adopted the county. Always tricky when Yorkshire play Lancashire at cricket, becasue I used to babysit Warren HEgg (yes, really!)..
I love the place, though and I'd like to share my reasons with you...
WHERE IS YORKSIRE?
Up in't North..stretching from Sheffield in the South to up beyond York in the North..the North York Moors are beautiful but a little bleak! Eastern boundary= the North Sea..and the Western boundary is Lancashire..
WHAT CAN YOU SEE?
Well, you name it, we have it. There are the Yorkshire Dales, fabulous walking country just north of Skipton (and it's castle)full of sheep, limestone wall, fresh air and vast landscapes that make you feel alive. Black Sheep beer in many Dales...

FREE BISCUITS FROM YORKSHIRE TEA
Review of Yorkshire Tea Biscuits by
dabmim
Advantages: Yummy, moorish,
Disadvantages: Lack of availability
...There was I alone on a hot summer’s day and feeling shaky! Testing my blood sugars revealed that they had dropped to 4.1mmol and I was starting the signs of a hypoglycaemic attack. Knowing I needed sugar, but hating drinking sugared drinks I rummaged through our cupboards and found a packet of Yorkshire Tea Biscuits, they were covered with sugar so I thought get a nice cup of tea and settle down with them both, and then thoughts of something I hadn’t done for ages came into my head – dunking!
I got my biscuits for FREE, yes that was correct I said FREE. Yorkshire tea bags have a little token on them, and if you collect those tokens you can send off for various items including their (not so good) tea cake, toy vehicles, tea towels and of course these biscuits.
The packet is decorative enough with the Yorkshire tea logo and the word...

The South Yorkshire Transport Museum
Review of The South Yorkshire Transport Museum by
micksheff
Advantages: Nostalgic, Historical
Disadvantages: Admission Charges, Limited Opening Hours
...The South Yorkshire Transport Museum can be found at Aldwarke, near Rotherham in South Yorkshire. Until recently this Transport Museum was located in the former Tinsley Tram Sheds between Sheffield and Rotherham. I visited here about 4 years ago and it was then called the Sheffield Bus Museum. Now it has relocated, it has been given a new name, the South Yorkshire Transport Museum.
The former Sheffield Bus Museum first opened its doors to the Public ten years ago, in 1997. In December 2006 this Museum closed, re-opening at its present location a few weeks ago, in the Spring of 2007.
This Museum has a collection of Trams and Buses that were once in use in Sheffield and the surrounding area. All of these have been fully restored and are in pristine condition. Almost all of them are also in full working order and when the weather...

Why Yorkshire?
Review of Yorkshire (England) by
cornishcoast
Advantages: Culture, coast, friendly people, good food,
Disadvantages: Rain and cyclists
...Why Yorkshire? Even the most discerning person would find it hard not to find something they would feel positive about in this county of plenty. From the stunning coastal scenery, to the history of York and all its secrets - the ghost walks are a must, to the Leeds experience of shops and nightlife, to the peace and tranquility of the Dales - in Yorkshire there is no time to be bored.
Perhaps I am biased as I am a tyke but in all my travels I find coming home to Yorkshire just that. Home is where the heart is and you'll find a fine welcome wherever you visit.
Forget the diets when you experience Yorkshire fare at one of the many tearooms on offer. Fish and chips on a blustery day at one of the many resorts along the east coast can leave you feeling either exhilarated or soaked - both an experience. If mobility is an issue the resorts...

'Ard Water, Not With Yorkshire Tea!
Review of Yorkshire Tea by
mickeydumville
Advantages: Smells and Tastes Great
Disadvantages: Bit Pricey With An Aftertaste Some May Not Like
...Amongst the dreaded bills in today's post was a small white jiffy bag. Like a child in a sweet shop it had to be opened first, mainly because I couldn't remember what freebie I'd ordered! Inside was a green box containing Yorkshire Tea bags, not just any tea bag but Taylors of Harrogate's special blend for hard water and ten of them at that.
Pictures of rural Yorkshire adorn the box and for a few moments memories came flooding back to me. I was born 11 miles from Harrogate and the pictures returned me to the countryside I played in as a child. I was also reminded of trips with my grandparents to Harrogate market where after a busy morning, my Gran took me to Betty's Tea Rooms (part of the Taylors empire) while my Grandad sampled more than his share of Yorkshire ale. Such was the impression the box made on me.
Right that's memory...

Yorkshire Bank is a disgrace to the name
Review of Yorkshire Bank by
fightgear
Advantages: NONE
Disadvantages: terrible service, self serving, no decency
...Several years ago my wife and I opened a Yorkshire Bank executive bank account. For this privilege we paid about £50 per year but for this we got what was called an executive account. Special cheque card with a higher limit, a gold mastercard, automatic overdraft of up to £500, a personal banker who sorted any problems out directly for you. This was fine, on paper. When things went to the dogs ( the company i worked for went into administration), suddenly they wanted everything back at once.
There was no gentle support, they kept piling on pressure, sending in debt collectors, and finally taking us to court and making the unsecured overdraft become secured on our home. We worked out the bank charges at over £17,500 over 12 months. Some days we would receive six letters from them all being charged at £35 each. Our debt to them was £12...

Magic stones in the Yorkshire countryside
Review of Yorkshire Sculpture Park by
battiest
Advantages: You don't have to be 'arty' and it doesn't cost a fortune
Disadvantages: The time will fly, one visit just isn't enough
...Update November 2007: see end of review.
We only discovered Yorkshire Sculpture Park last year and have already been back several times. This wonderful place has so much to offer, it's hard to know where to begin. It's described on the map guide (which is free, by the way) as '500 acres of historic landscape and international sculpture,' which sounds pretty dry to me and certainly doesn't do it justice. So I'll tell you what I think it is: it's a multi-sensory treasure that uplifts the spirit and delights the mind. If you haven't been to YSP yet, then GO!
*How to get there*
By car. Yorkshire Sculpture Park is situated on the beautiful Bretton Estate near Wakefield, just a mile from Junction 39 of the M1. The main entrance is off the A637 and is clearly signposted from the motorway.
Public transport. You can go by train...
