...The sequel to the highly popular SNES game, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, arrives as an update for the N64. The game has remained faithful to the original: it has retained the 2D format, rather than the more common 3D, and some of the features from the original game, such as the eating of various objects, and the general movement of Yoshi, have remained intact. No appearance from the moustachioed Mario either, not even in baby form, giving Yoshi a chance to shine; or so you would think. ...Aah, yoshi's story. The memories. It was the first game I got with my N64, but also the first game I sold with my N64. It is a 2D platformer - rare on the N64. And it's so...darn...cute. <sniff>. You play as the Yoshis, finding their way through a storybook. The graphics are good - pre-rendered, but - as with the whole game - in two dimensions. The sound is reasonable, but the irritatingly cheerful music begins to get on your nerves, and the yoshi's singing...well, let's just say that the mute button may be used for the first time in your television's life with Yoshi's story. The rest of the effects are okay, as is some music. The main problem, the reason why I wouldn't recommend it? The life of the game. The game has 16 levels in total, but you only have to finish 4 of them to win the game. And I did this in a day. For the next week... Read review

...In 1995 towards the end days of the SNES, Nintendo released its final 2D platform game before branching off into the world of 3D with Mario 64. Yoshi’s Island was the self styled prequel, though billed as a sequel, to Super Mario World. The game begins with a stalk carrying two babies, namely Mario and Luigi. However Kamek, Koopa’s evil bird wizard type thing, knows that these two brothers will cause trouble for Koopa in the future and so aims to kidnap them both. The henchmen make off with Luigi but Mario falls downward to the earth below, facing sudden death, if it wasn’t for bouncing onto a Yoshi’s back. Mario finds himself on Yoshi’s Island and, with the Yoshi’s being a kind bunch, aim to reunite Mario with Luigi but its not going to be plain sailing. ...Yoshi's Island came around at the very end of the SNES lifespan but it was regarded as one of the very best Mario platformers and a fantastic game to see the console off. The little green dinosaur hasn't always starred in the best games Nintendo have thought up but he is still iconic within the Mario universe. Now, after a while waiting for a game to star in, he steps up to bolster the fresh line up for the DS. Yoshi Touch & Go is the biggest title to launch since the DS was released and Nintendo will be hoping that he can work his charm like he did back in the days of the SNES. Yoshi Touch & Go started off as an early tech demo for the DS shown at E3 in 2004. Titled Balloon Flight, it gave players the job of guiding baby Mario down from the sky by drawing clouds to avoid enemies and other little problems along the way... Read review

Advantages: Classic platform game, Mario, Yoshi
Disadvantages: Dated graphics, On a system that most people won't own now (although emulation is obviously an option), As with any other game it costs money (unless you take the emulation option)

...found the fun of playing this game simply came from playing rather than having an interesting story. I couldn't even remember the storyline other than that it had to do with saving the Princess from Bowser or something along these lines, good enough to give you a reason for what you are doing but not something you should really think too much about as there isn't a lot to the storyline other than kill the enemies to progress through the stages until you get to the end, kill Bowser and rescue the Princess (sorry, I gave the very unpredictable end away a bit there). Yoshi becomes involved in the journey through Bowser trapping him in an egg and stealing many of his friends/family (correct me if I'm wrong with this, my memory is very bad on the subject :) and decides to help Mario on his quest. --Gameplay-- The gameplay is mario... Advantages: Beautiful graphics, even in 2D; fun; wonderful sound effects
Disadvantages: Storyline very bare-bones! Badly structured.

...To be honest, I was a little dismayed by the reviews this game got when it came out; but, nonetheless, I went out and bought it and haven't been truly disappointed at any stage. This isn't to say that Yoshi's Story 64 doesn't have its little foibles which get on your nerves; for example, the way the stage on each world you choose influences the number of stages that will be available to you in the next world (if, for example, you choose Level 1 in World 1, Level 1 ONLY will be available to you in World 2 onwards). The fact that only one player can save their game irritates all except the player WITH the saved game. But the features which make it good, by and large, outweigh the negative features. The phenomenally cute graphics, such as when Yoshi sniffs, or is left standing doing nothing for a few seconds; the wonderful sound... Read review
