R6 - Haven't stopped laughing yet...updated Jan 09 & April 09

Advantages: Fast, furious, handles great, accelerates great, stops brilliantly, looks wicked. Cheap insurance
Disadvantages: Ugly end can. That's it.

...I ordered an R6 after demo'ing one in January 2001. My FZR 600 had a persistant over-heating problem and I was having trouble keeping up with mates on bigger bikes so I took an R6 out for a blast. Within 5 minutes my grin was so wide I thought the top of my head would fall off! And I haven't stopped yet! The combination of lightweight, power and handling combines into an insurance friendly package that has the capability of beating any other bike through the twisties and only loses out to bigger bikes on top end speed and torque out of corners. I bought a 2000 model in March 2001 for just over 5000 pounds and have covered 4000 miles on it and nearly all of that is scratching around the twisties of A & B roads in the north of England. Damn awesome 2000 Yamaha YZF-R6

Advantages: Its light, it goes, it stops, it looks great and it scores an A+ in all these categories!!
Disadvantages: Its total race position, so if you want to do a lot of miles, you're gonna get wrist ache, and they dont like to go slow either!!

...My first encounter with the Yamaha was back in 2001, when i took one out for a test ride from our local shop. It was V registered, red and awesomely fast. Unfortunately it was also £6000, so i was totally outpriced and went off home with my tail between my legs and a persistant niggle in the back of my brain telling me to sell those kidneys and get that bike! I bought a cheap 1984 GPz900r and ran it till it died then went on to a 1996 ZX9R. it was lovely, incredibly fast but very heavy and difficult for me to move around. The R6 never left my system and found the hankering was getting too much to bear so after re MOT-ing my zx9r having only done 250 miles on it since the previous one i decided that now was definitely the time for change. ...Please rate this review. I've been riding since I was 7 but have only been on the road for 8 years. In this time have ridden many different types of bikes ranging from crossers to big 1000's. The only one that I have not got tired of though is the R6. To start of with. These things go forever and get better. Mine currently has 28000 miles on, my friends has 40000 and they are still going strong. Service regularly and you will not have any problems. When you get it in a straight line it delivers its power a little on the aggressive side but it is easy to handle. It pulls best between 7 and 14000 just before its 14500 rpm limiter. I think it is geared that little bit more effectively compared to other 600 cc bikes. This bike comes with the same breaks as the R1 so you have no problem stopping aswell. A girlies eye view

Advantages: Its a great pose, a great attention getter, and wonderful ride
Disadvantages: I can think of none as a rider

...I have both riden and pillioned on the R6 and like many other would vow never to do so again.This bike is definately a lone rider bike. The riding position would suit people of a taller stature than myself (I'm 5'7)as the pegs are set quite low down. The weight and handleing are perfectly balanced, though I did find that a steering damper gave it just that little bit better responce. I have fitted a double bubble screen to try and cut down on the wind lash, it has proved beneficial and has made the riding at speed a lot smoother. If a pillion is required then I would suggest a steadier pace is taken as it is easy to forget and loose your passanger at the first set of lights you pull away from. ...The first thing many readers will think when looking at this review is "oh my god" how ugly is that camera?", and possibly as a secondary thought, "who the hell are Ricoh, didn't he once manage Arsenal?". The answers to these questions are so obviously yes, it is a ugly mother of a camera and no, that was Bruce Rioch, but I stray from the subject matter so on with my thoughts on the camera. Cost & Availability: I will admit here, I don't own the Ricoh Caplio R6, but I have used it regularly now for over 4 months both larking around and while giving serious demonstrations to the potential buyers. '99 R1 rocks the road for me!

Advantages: Quick, Fast, exciting to ride and stylish.. as well as Japanese and reliable!
Disadvantages: Twitchy front end on earlier models, needs stearing damper.

...I own a 1999 Yamaha YZF-R1 (1000cc) in V&M custom race colours (Red/Yellow flames and sponsors). I bought the bike just short of two years ago for approx £4,000 from a dealer. The bike had only done 4,500 dry miles (genuine as a good friend knows the previous owner) and the bike was/is in mint condition. It had been pampered, the previous owner is pretty well off and used this custom painted R1 as a show off machine more than anything, so straight away I knew I was on to a good deal as a lot of R1's have been thrashed and trashed since they are such a nutters tool! This model of R1 is not fuel injected but carbs, however my father does have the 06 fuel injected model and after a week or so standing in the garage and even after cold weather both bikes start first time, no hassle be it carbs or fuel injection! Thundercat - It won't get lost in a sea of CBR's

Advantages: Underrated, brakes, engine
Disadvantages: brakes, headlight, exhaust downpipes

...on twisty roads with no streetlighting. Dipping the headlights due to oncoming traffic would cut down your depth of vision so much it was disconcerting especially on unfamiliar roads. The Thundercat was superceded by the R6 but was still sold for a few more years alongside the Fazer 600. There are still decent second hand ones out there and for a decent price too, as the price never recovered from that CBR comparison. As for this particular one, my Dad still rides it, ( he wil be 69 in February 2007)....

The best bike for under £2000?!?!

Advantages: Cheap, good looks, comfortable ride, pillion comfort
Disadvantages: Easily rusting Steel downpipes and rear swingarm

...A bike for under £2000 - not an easy choice! With the budget set i started hunting! Having had an SV650S previously (forced to sell due to getting married!) i really wanted another. As i was trawling EBay for one, i came across a Thundercat on there where the owner had sneakily snuck in the letters "Not SV" in the title! Upon looking at it i was shocked - £1600 for an S reg bike with 25000 miles on it - full service history and in the latest yellow R6 colours! Whatsmore an HPI check revealed no damage/finance etc (damage a main concern with re-painted bikes!) so off i went - it was mine! It took me a while to get used to a four from a V twin, enen though it was alot more work working the gears i started to enjoy it. My wife thought it was gorgeous too, and agreed it was far more comfy than my previous SV was! Only disadvantages...
