Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders

Advantages: Excellent Fun Lucas Art Adventure Game
Disadvantages: Graphics resolution and sounds are not so great

...Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders is an classic point and click adventure game developed and published by Lucas Arts. The game was first released in 1988 for the Commodore C64, Amiga, Atari ST and finally PC. This was my first adventure game I played on my Atari ST when I was a teenager, it was real fun working with my brother and cousin on the puzzles. The only let down was the graphics and sounds, we always got stuck trying to solve the wacky puzzles which got really frustrating when we couldn't solve them, we would be stuck for days and even weeks trying to solve it. Background Story The story introduces Zak a reporter working for the National Inquisitor, arguing with his boss over the stupid stories he has to cover. His boss tells him to write this last article then he will be allowed to go and write his novel...

The taste of America in Norwich

Advantages: Family friendly, consistently good food, nice atmosphere
Disadvantages: Date decor, dirty toilets, lack of parking, they will serve a rare burger if requested

...Zaks on Mousehold Heath, Norwich is your typical American style diner that serves the typical burgers, pastas, salads and grilled meats of restaurant of this type. Before I met my other half and before I became exposed to the delights of ?proper? Italian, Indian, Thai, Chinese and Japanese food these American style grill houses were the restaurants of choice for my mates and I on nights out and Zaks was always a favourite although that was over four years ago. I had arranged to catch up with an old work colleague and after struggling to think of going somewhere for dinner it was agreed that we should go to Zaks to take advantage of the current ?2 for 1? offer on the burger menu. Being a wet Tuesday night in July, and in Norwich, I did not see the need to book a table. After all, how busy could it be? We got to Zaks around 6...

Kidman, Penn, and an assassination attempt...

Advantages: Tense, beautiful art direction, excellent musical score, Kidman, Penn, Keener
Disadvantages: A bit too predictable; the ending lets it down

...The Interpreter is a thriller set in the United Nations - well, some in Africa (another fictional country - Matoba - fictional African countries are sure getting popular these days, we recently saw one in Sahara as well!) Interpreter Sylvia Broome (Nicole Kidman) works at the UN, and one night when coming back in to pick up some things she left there due to the building being evacuated for a security alert, she overhears a plot to kill the hated President of that country when he comes to give an address to the General Assembly. Taking this information to the security people the next day, she finds herself under the spotlight as special agents Tobin Keller (Sean Penn) and Dot Woods (Catherine Keener) question her story. As the storyline progresses, more and more inconsistencies are found with Broome's testimony and background, but is...

They Fought The Law... But Did The Law Win?

Advantages: Detailed analysis, occasional sniping between contributors
Disadvantages: You really need to have seen the film

...of critical theory, the book also throws up a number of things that are definitely there, such as the playful mobile camera work in the opening sequence in the high street. The book kicks off, after the inevitable editor's introduction, with essays by Arthur Penn (the director) and David Newman (one of the writers), which chronicle the slow journey from the initial screenplay to the finished film and its immediate public reception. Following this come close examinations of various key elements of the film. Visual style is looked at (all the groovy discontinuous editing in the opening scene, and the mobile camera along the high street - loads of point of view stuff), as is the initial fury over the graphic violence in the film. Most usefully for my essay, that particular article compares Bonnie and Clyde with Oliver Stone's Natural Born...

Fasta Pasta

Advantages: =
Disadvantages: =

...I love pasta , especially shaped pastas which hold sauce and flavour wonderfully . The only troubel is, it takes about 10-12 minutes to cook normally, which is fine if I'm cooking a home made bolognese sauce or something to go with it, but is a bit of a pain in the bum when I just want a big bowl of pasta covered in grated cheese . Many supermarkets now sell quick cook pasta - and asda is no exception, offering two varieties, penne and fusilli . I chose Penne because I love how the sauce goes into the tubes if I'm using a sauce, and it just absorbs flavour well . Now, the ingredients in this pasta are exactly the same as in the ordinary pasta , so you're wondering now what the miracle is that makes it cook faster - and the secret is ....thinner and smaller penne quills. Thats all it is . In the same way a rasher of bacon cooks faster...

Milk- Sean Penn's oscar nod is deserved!

Advantages: Story.Performances
Disadvantages: Might not appeal to few for the subject and the genre

...and does that with much fluency and with aplomb! Harvey Milk is played by Sean Penn, and boy didn't he deserve the Oscar nod here! He is fantastic, carrying an irresistible charm yet very commanding and confident. Its the performances by the cast which takes the film to a new level altogether. Milk is a very well made film and not once does the viewer get uncomfortable of the whole homosexuality issue,It is rather dealt with utmost confidence and flair by the director. The story is well written, gripping in most parts. I won't go into details of the story since most of us know it is supposed to be around politics, so i will leave that to yourself. If you are thinking if you should watch this or not, you should stop thinking and get a copy immediately. You don't want to miss this film, ohh, by the way, the ending is brilliant!...

OOH YOU ARE SAUCY

Advantages: Cheap, tastes nice
Disadvantages: Not overly inspiring

...Just when you thought it was safe to come back to my profile – I’m back in the food and drink category! I know you all love these food and drink ops really (snigger) so without further ado, let me introduce you to my latest product focus: “Tesco Italiano Penne Mozarella Bake” RECIPE “Pasta quills in a rich tomato sauce with mozzarella cheese”. The product description is hardly the most inspiring one on the shelf – I think Tesco need to invest in some new marketing consultants. Pasta sauces are always described as rich – how about “tasty”, “full-flavoured” or “authentically Italian tasting”? I would also draw reference to the fact that the mozzarella forms a lovely melted stringy crust on top of the pasta. Food is only as good as you make it...

Anyone can do magic. Yes, even you...

Advantages: Clearly explained, well laid out, very engaging. 13 tricks for a tenner, quite excellent.
Disadvantages: Some additional materials are required, some of which are not immediately accessible

...Having been shocked to discover that a review of this DVD has yet to be written, I thought I would once more entertain you all with my opinions of this quite wonderful DVD by Master of Illusion, David Penn. Extremely engaging, easy to follow and absolutely fascinating, this DVD is a tremendous watch and something you will find going back to time and time again. Best of all, each of these tricks can be learnt by anyone and mastered within a very short period of time (including me would you believe) so prepare to be amazed as I conjure up my review of David Penn's 'Street Magic Secrets'... David Penn, for those of you who may not have heard the name, is a magician and illusionist similar to Paul Zenon but seemingly without the same fame and profile (I actually bought Paul's 'Street Magic' book first but found it a little stifling...

Sean Penn IS Harvey Milk! The film of the year!

Advantages: Watch a compelling Sean Penn performance and learn some history!
Disadvantages: I am hoping the DVD extras will include some actual documentary footage of Milk?

..., "Good Will Hunting", offers the closest comparison with "Milk". At it's heart is the focus on a man who finally makes himself step out into the world to realise his true self. Matt Damon hid his intellect and mathematical genius for fear of what he might achieve. It takes Robin Williams' therapist to liberate him. Sean Penn's incarnation of Harvey Milk waits until he turns forty to take his life on his destined path, moving from New York to San Francisco with his younger lover (the excellent James Franco). But it's the realisation of the oppression by police and neighbourhood residents that same-sex couples experience that catapults Milk into campaigning to become one of the city supervisors. We see him galvanise the throngs of gay activists who increasingly populate the Castro district of San Francisco before he finally becomes a city...
