...Led Zeppelin are the epitome of 70's rock. They helped create the genre of rock and heavy metal. Led Zeppelin started off as what was essentially a bluesy rock band. Their first album [the self titled "Led Zeppelin"] was a mish mash of blues and material Jimmy Page took with him from his Yardbirds days. Good examples of this period of blues rock is "Dazed and Confused", "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" and "Good Times Bad Times" This album got heavily slated by the press, though it still climbed speedily through the charts. The next album "Led Zeppelin II" was much more in the vein of hard rock, it really revolutionised the genre. The anthemic riff from "Whole Lotta Love" [for those of you not familiar with this song - it was used as the Top of The Pops theme song] set the style and pace for all the future rock bands to come. Advantages: A Monumental Achievement For Rock

...In 1971, Led Zeppelin released an album that would help revolutionise rock music! This album was Led Zeppelin's fourth. By this time they had already gained a tight stranglehold on the rock music scene. The album is, in itself, structered and cohesive - taking the listener on a rollercoaster of sound. It starts of violent and then gently peaks - before crashing down again with one more small lul before the climatic end. Track one is "Black Dog" - it has an intense drum beat and the guitar riff is blistering. John Paul Jones keeps the pace while Plant performs vocal stunts others could only dream of if they'd been castrated! This track really kicks off the album and sets the pace for the rest of the tracks. Track two is a real rock 'n' roll song called, surprisingly enough, "Rock and Roll". ...I have been prompted to write a review of this after reading another review which I expressed views on this album so diametrically opposed to mine I felt compelled to respond. In Through The Out Door is an album which shows a huge progression beyond the excellent Led Zeppelin I, II, III and IV albums. This however was not a retrograde step, it was not a negative development it merely reflected the progression in the excellence of the band as musicians and the advance in their songwriting and production. There was a greatly increased use of mellotron and synthesisers yes and John Paul Jones was much further forward on this album than any other but there are still huge contributions from the other band members. John Bonhams, whose death a year or so later precipitated the bands demise, plays the drums with conviction and discipline. Jimmy... Read review

...In Through The Out Door, was recorded in November and December of 1978, and released on August 16, 1979. Because of the untimely death of drummer John Bonham, this was the last music that this band would record together--Coda, although released later, consisted of tunes that had been recorded earlier in the career of this great band. It's really a shame that the career of Led Zeppelin as a group had to end in such an untimely fashion. As In Through The Out Door very ably demonstrates, these musicians were just beginning to get to that point in their musical evolution where they were experimenting with different styles, sounds and instrumentations. ...I can't believe no one has reviewed or rated this album as yet! So, what does the name Dread Zeppelin conjure up? Well, if you're thinking along thelines of Dread - could be reggae, and Zeppelin.. something to do with rock legends Led Zeppelin... you would be half way there. There's a bit more to it than that though. It is Led Zep, 'reggaefied', but with an Elvis Presley impersonator on vocals. Yep, you heard that correctly... Led Zep, reggae style with Elvis singing. Sounds nonsensical perhaps? Wrong! Okay, the thing about this band is that they took their music very seriously... this isn't just a spoof or micky-take of Led Zep. This is a band that plays the music superbly, and actually does something you would not expect - it adds to the music of Zeppelin. ...For a fan of Led Zeppelin such as myself, who was too young to ever see the band perform live this really is an exciting DVD. I have split my review into 2 parts here, with seperate comments on each DVD. DVD 1 This DVD features the 1970 Albert Hall concert and some clips of other early gigs. The Albert Hall footage certainly provides superb examples of Led Zep's earlier material performed live. It is noticable how the songs are still quite snappy, there are moments of improvisation but most numbers remain fairly true to their album conterparts. The closing numbers, Whole Lotta Love, Communication Breakdown and Bring it Home are the highlights for me with the audience gathered at the edge of the stage really getting into it and I also noticed some early examples of headbanging, which was good to see! Rehearsed and arranged ahead of their arrival in the studio, the nine tracks took only 30 hours to record over nine days and for a reputed cost of £1,782. The four members of the band were, Guitarist - Jimmy Page, Vocalist - Robert Plant, Bassist - John Paul Jones and Drummer - John Bonham.
