Excellent piece of kit

Advantages: Low-cost, reliable, full-featured
Disadvantages: Doesn't look very cool (but who cares?)

...Over the last few months I've tried Wireless ADSL routers from 4 different manufacturers, using 54g wireless cards with WPA encryption. The Belkin one would randomly refuse to allow 1 or 2 wireless clients to connect. The Netgear one had very poor range (even though it was supposedly "RangeMax"). The Linksys one would randomly refuse to assign IP addresses to wireless clients after they'd connected. The Zyxel one just works. Reliably. 100% of the time. All 4 routers were running the latest firmware. I even tried the helpdesk services for the other 3 and they all came up with the same irrelevant suggestions ("Try a different channel", "Try restoring the factory defaults", "Try upgrading the firmware") - I ended up wondering if they were all actually written by the same person! ...I have to say I'm very impressed with the Zyxel USB stick, I have a wireless set up in my house but one of my PCs did not have a wireless card. This is an extremely cheap alernative to fitting a card and ideal for those who don't want to, or don't know how to open up the PC and install them. Zyxel have made a stylish little USB device with a very easy to use software interface. Literally within minutes you are up and running and able to connect to any wireless network of your choice, within reason of course. Another neat feature is that it can be used as an Access Point (AP) this means if you haven't got a wireless router you can use the Zyxel for this purpose. Belkin routers in a nutshell

Disadvantages: Have to restart it when you boot up your computer with Windows XP, unreliable

One of the things you notice when you open the package is a quick install leaflet, which is great, it usually means a quick and easy install that even a computer novice could do without trouble, and that is exactly what you get with this. The constant trouble I had with these routers is, when running a machine on Windows XP, I had to restart the router when I started the computer, otherwise the computer would not recognise it was on the network and therefore couldn't get through to the internet connection. Although this is just another button to press when starting your computer, it becomes frustrating because when you reset the router all the other computers on the network will lose the internet connection for around 30 seconds until it has completed. ...I used modems supplied my my internet service provider and experienced problems with connectivity and drop out. In the end I got so sick of phoning the ISPs to report problems to be given the same twaddle (updating drivers etc.) that I went into my local branch of PC World and asked for their recommendation. The Netgear DG834G was the salesman's recommendation. It cost £50 and has been one of the better purchases I have made. My desk top PC and now my son's laptop use the same router and the wireless signal has never failed. We do not suffer from connectivity issues and trust the routers security to protect us from freeloaders and hackers. I would personally recommend this router type over those supplied by service providers....

Now this is rated as being the best selling router/modem in the UK and has been for some time. I think i paid around £40 from ebuyer.com. I chose it because of the fact its reasonably priced. Its a good trustworthy brand and it seemed to come up to scratch on speed. Upon opening the box the installation was very simple indeed.
