Advantages: You don't have to do anything - the audio CDs do it for you. Disadvantages: You have to make do with the messages already recorded. You cannot amend / add to them.

At $20 each, the gift is fairly inexpensive. But as value-addition to their life, I think it has made a world of difference.
You buy the CD, put them in the player, pull the headphone around the ears, and ... ...in any audio CD. One version is digitized using subliminal recording (you can't even hear what is being said), reverse speech (you just can't make out what is being said), and stereo confusion (different messages coming to your left and right ears). The keywords are "can't make out" - your conscious mind cannot make out what it is hearing. But the subconscious can, and that is the whole idea.
