Well, some people like all of their e-communication handled by one site, one address, one communication form. By this, I mean that a singular site can be used in order to send text messages to mobiles (on any network), emails can be sent and recieved online, contacts can be kept, and text notification of emails can be sent to your mobile.
This is in a way another form of a complete communication solution. Talk21 is ran by *with* btinternet, and is fairly efficient. Unfortunately, the site itself is fairly complex, which leads to a slow loading time, especially for those using a laptop or other mini-computer device.
If you are abroad or not able to access your usual computer, you can have your mails from other accounts, such as a bt account, or a freeserve account sent directly to the 'online' mailbox of talk21. This means even if you take a holiday to floriday or Thailand and still want to read your mails you can!
The sms notification for emails works fairly well, as I have tested myself. The only drawback is that sometimes it seems to be a little slow. Other than that, it's nice to know that people like you and have left you emails!
The SMS and mail sending service ranges from very fast (seconds in speed) to fairly slow, sometimes taking days to arrive. So, if it's a text to something very important, then you're taking a risk. However, this is no different to sending from your mobile, as that can be unpredicatable in speed also. The SMS is free, which is great if you have no mobile credit.
The email feature is good, usually being reliable and fast. The 4.88 megabyte limit is fairly good, just make sure no-one sends pictures or mp3's to the account whilst you can't get access to your home pc...
A few problems I've seen is that it occassionaly can be a little slow, and that it can quit for no apparent reason. Also, is logs you out after 30 mins of inactivity, though it is understandable why.
Overall: Well designed, proffessional looking, and a good amount of features.... Few!!!!

well, who knows...
We all like something different, and my personal fave is talk21. Breathe.com and genie are all similar, but that's just my preference.
Advantages: Lots of handy features, you can listen to your e-mails Disadvantages: A fair bit of advertising, and has recently been renamed 'Talk21 with BT Internet'... urgh!
