Oh I love this site!
What is it? Textmessenger is another one of those sites that provides free SMS messages. Simply sign up for an account, log in and you're flying.
What's an SMS then? SMS stands for short messaging service - basically allowing you to send 160 characetrs of text to any digital mobile phone.
Why Use TextMessenger Then? Well basically because it's free and easy to use. Like I said, sign up for your account, log in, click send (at which point you have to log in again for some odd reason). Then the nifty part - once you enter a phone number for the first time, it will prompt you for a name so it can add this number to your address book - then the next time you use the site it's just a matter of picking the name from the address book, instead of finding the number on your phone and typing it in. Textmessenger also allows for the use of signatures on the end of messages - eg "from Dave ..." which includes a reply number. I don't tend to use this, but you can select if it's used or not when you send the message. A nifty feature is that the recipient of the message can reply to it - the only thing is it is directed to an inbox on your account rather than your phone.
Are there any restrictions? Yes - to prevent abuse of the system, only three messages PER DAY can be sent to any one mobile number - not just your account, but from the whole site. This is to prevent people signing up for multiple accounts to send spam to people's mobile phones, or annoying messages. Should you want to send a message after three have been sent to one phone, you must pay a credit... more about those later You are only allowed to use 120 of the 160 limit, as the rest of the message is appended by "free SMS from textmessenger.co.uk" message.
What's this credit business? To get credits, you phone a special number, and enter your unique six-figure ID number. This call costs £1.50 a minute, and you get 30 credits per minute you call, making a unit 5p. This still means that a text message using a unit costs 5p, cheaper than most networks. You can also use this system to get ringtones and logos for your phone - dial a different number (50p/minute this time), you will be credited with the 10 credits nessecary to send the logo/ringtone to your phone. They have a wide selection of ringtones and logos, and at 50p a throw are one of the cheapest on the net. As a bonus when you sign up, you are given 10 credits to begin your account with. I still have 6 left a year later.
Is it fast? Yes. The site is simple, with minimal graphics and adverts to ensure it runs quickly and smoothly, and it does, pages loading in seconds. The messages aren't quite so quick, taking about 1 minute to arrive at their destination, but they're free, so hey, who's complaining.
It's my favourite SMS site, and I recommend it to all.
