Advantages: Funny and takes the mick! Disadvantages: Too much about Pc's, not enough about Macs (real computers...)
The Register! A favourite site of mine if there ever was. Being heavily in to my computers, well, Macintoshes, anyway, this site is almost more frequented by me than these opinion pages, along with another fine e-publication, Macworld.co.uk. For those not in the know, The Reg, is an IT news site that prides itself in 'Biting the hand that feeds it'. They also pride themselves in being completely insane, mocking, Microsoft-bashing and the occasional ... ...various areas: * Front Page - all the newest news from all the categories slung together to create a wish-wash of IT news. * Software - pretty self-explanatary. No, Reg vulcan, don't kill Bill Gates.... Oh, go on!! * Enterprise Systems - boring stuff about servers, LANs and other clever enterprise goodies. Alright if your in that business I s'pose. * Personal Hardware - If it plugs in to your PC, they'll mock it, complain about it, and rave about ...

Advantages: Up to date IT news Disadvantages: Nothing but IT news
I don't remember how I first happened upon the website of The Register (The hand that bites IT) but I have been a visitor ever since, frequenting the site daily, although I usually go at around 6pm as the site's last update is around that time, so you get all the day's IT news on one day. The articles are generally well written, with an often sarcastic undertone, and some of the stories over tha last few months have been genuinely enlightening. For ... ...stupid, Bill Gates was actually a very accomplished programmer. No sphere of Information technology is left out either, whether it's software, hardware, internet, website domain names etc. Such is the site's style and reporting, that for some time it was blocked by one of these web filtering programs. Why? Because it dared to write a story (and include a link to) a website that shows how to circumvent the said filtering software. Also because the ...

Advantages: Kept very up to date. Witty. Interesting topics. Disadvantages: I can't always get to it when I want to.
“Biting the Hand that Feeds IT”
The Register (www.theregister.co.uk) is a marvellous webpage. The best way to think of it and the very best way to describe it is as a specialist interest newspaper for the Twenty-First century. The Register follows all the rules.
> Rule #1: Content
The Register brings to its pages a frightfully up to date series of news stories pertaining to Information Technology (hence the IT in the slogan up top). ... ...Sega dumping the DreamCast, RedHotAnt going under, Microsoft’s new operating system (code name: Whister) an also helpful warnings about real computer viruses. These, of course, are just a few examples but I trust that they are enough to show the sort of ground that The Register covers. The actual articles are always well written. The reporters employ real English. I mean by that they steer clear of pretentious purple prose and rarely succumb ...

Advantages: News as it happens Disadvantages: Not found any yet
Net and IT geeks will, of course, find plenty to keep them interested in this fascinating site about all things computer and web-related. But as someone who has nowhere near enough expertise to qualify for geekdom, there's plenty of interest for just about everyone with even a passing interest in the subject. Whether it's news of the latest dot.com failure or reports of complaints against ISPs, the news, almost invariably is here first. There's also ...
