Politics within SPS - an excellent choice!
Review of Social & Political Sciences by
Leviathan01
Advantages: Quality of teaching and supervisions, choice of papers
Disadvantages: High workload (but that is true of every Oxbridge course)
As a former SPS student, who studied in the US and London as well, I can only say that the standard of teaching and supervisions (tutorials) was absolutely excellent. Particularly undergrads will not experience an as thorough and inspiring syllabus somewh ...

Excellent course
Review of Social & Political Sciences by
urigubu
Advantages: Great course, teaching and resources
Disadvantages: Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology and Politics all a requirement in 1st year
Ignore the older reviews; the SPS department has grown and matured rapidly over the last few years into one of the UK's best. The SPS degree draws on lecturers and courses from many other departments and centers (like History, Anthropology, International ...

Social Anthropology at Cambridge
Review of Archaeology & Anthropology by
k1rsty
Advantages: interest, good course structure, good teaching
Disadvantages: some supervisors are better than others, university quite traditional
Arch and Anth, as it's affectionately known, is a really interesting course if you're not sure what you want to specialise in when you arrive. The first year combination of archeology, biological anthropology and social anthropology is incredibly useful f ...

Patchy to say the least
Review of Social & Political Sciences by
katherinemay
Advantages: Well, at least it's a Cambridge degree
Disadvantages: Terrrible organisation and attitude to students
The problem with Cambridge is that, as an institution, it places a great deal of trust in its faculties to do a good job. Not unreasonable, you might say, but then some faculties are better than others.
And that's the problem with SPS. As a faculty i ...

Interesting course if you work for it
Review of Chemical Engineering by
stoduk
Advantages: Friendly dept, good facilities, mostly good lectures
Disadvantages: Wrong choice of college gives you bad supervisors, hard work, a couple of terrible lecturers
This course is arranged in a slightly indirect way. In your first (of four) years you study either Natural Sciences (including Chemistry as one option) or Engineering. I chose the Natural Science route, but really there isn't too much difference. In th ...

Really good, hands-on course
Review of Philosophy by
SmileyBen
Advantages: Interesting, small and intimate group, well taught. All round a great subject.
Disadvantages: Little choice in the first year. Not many direct career prospects (though philosophy graduates have a fairly high employment rate)
The Philosophy course at Cambridge is really fantastic. Rather than being overburdened with texts, the emphasis is on actually doing philosophy rather than studying the history of philosophy. In the first year there are five exams, all compulsory, in Meta ...

A good course, but one that could be so much better
Review of Social & Political Sciences by
Scoobydoo
Advantages: Good range of papers, good supervisions, some good lecturers
Disadvantages: It's run by buffoons!
It's not unusual for Cambridge students to continually slag off their course, but SPS must get more stick than most. Let's get the bad stuff out of the way first, before we move on to the (many) positive aspects of this course.
SPS as a faculty is diso ...
