From the Slopes to the Springs…Bad Kleinkirchheim
Review of Carynthia (Austria) by
snowbunni
Advantages: The Best-Kept Secret In The Alps...!
Disadvantages: None!
I stepped out of the Kaiserburg gondola. The soft humming of the lift mechanics faded as I hoisted up my skis and moved out towards the summit. Above me, the sun shone in a clear and utterly cloudless alpine sky, and around me, in all directions, the Alps ...

I have recently been to Austria on holiday, as a regular traveller I have visited Austria on many occasions during the winter and the summer. During the winter the mountains are amazing and there is some great skiing to be done.

Obergurgl - an introduction to snowsports
Review of Austria - Obergurgl by
ab240
Advantages: Quiet slopes, Excellent for beginners, large variety and number of runs
Disadvantages: Fairly limited for advanced skiers, quiet nightlife, lack of activities for non-skiers
The resort of Obergurgl was my first experience of a skiing/snowboarding holiday so please forgive my inability to compare it with anything. Flying into Innsbruck (the nearest airport) is quite an experience, the plane swings between mountains upon its ap ...

Gasteinertal ist supertoll!
Review of Bad Gastein by
DeliaS
Advantages: Big valley with lots of skiing

A real Austria town, not just a honey-pot
Review of Schladming by
DeliaS
Advantages: Great high-mileage skiing with Amade liftpass
Disadvantages: Quiet nightlife on non world-cup weeks
We went to Schladming twice already, once in 2001 and again in 2003.
The town is in upper Styria (Obersteiermark), but is actually nearer to the well-known resorts of Salzburg (Zell Am See, Abtenau, etc.) than the provincial capital of Steiermark which ...

Good for snow cover, not very 'Austrian'
Review of Obertauern by
DeliaS
Advantages: High for Austria, good snow record
Disadvantages: More expensive than he rest of the region, not as 'charming' as some Austrian resorts
We visited Obertauern for New Year 03/04. I picked the resort as the height (1700-ish) was good for Austria so expected snow cover to be mnore reliable, considering it was quite an early holiday.
We travelled independently and flew into Salzburg airpo ...

A lovely town with a dark and cruel past
Review of Mauthausen (Austria) by
