It was Bartholomew Dias that stumbled across Cape Town in 1488. Jan van Riebeek was specifically sent there by the Dutch East India Company to establlish a settlement in Cape Town to replenish passing ships travelling between Europe and Indonesia, then known as Batavia. The company ran the Cape Colony until the British kicked them out in 1806. by Skerp
