Basically it is probably best known as a review site for anyone wishing to post a review about a hotel, holiday location, attraction etc, and also a useful place to visit for anyone thinking of booking a hotel or holiday, and wondering what the place will be like. You can search for a hotel, holiday park or location in the search bar, then read the customer reviews for that particular place. It is a popular site with over 20 million traveller reviews and opinions. However, it is also much more than that!
You can register to the site with your name and email address, then all the reviews you write will be stored under 'My Contributions'. Also displayed will be the number of people who have marked your review as helpful. You can also upload photographs along with your review. I have wrote a number of reviews myself. This is easy and straight-forward, and after submitting a review to the site it will be checked, and you receive an email when your review is published on the site.
There is a forum on the site also and people often use this to ask a specific question about a hotel or location, and members will answer their queries. Or if you read a review and would like to know more, or ask a specific question, then you can send a message to the person who wrote it via the site. The option is also there to 'compliment a reviewer' , you can enclose a message with your compliment if you wish. I have done this myself and found members to be very helpful, and likewise a couple of members have got in touch with me and asked further questions about places I have reviewed, and I was happy to help. It does seem a friendly site. Any questions I have had have been answered.
You also have a travel map which pinpoints where you have been and you can make this available for other people to see if you wish. It is a 'at a glance' guide to where you have visited and you can also use this to plan trips. There is a useful newsletter you can sign up to receive and also have the option to subscribe to Tripwatch, where you can enter specific locations or hotels and you will be alerted by email when new reviews are available. You can opt to receive updates and news of offers and competitions via email too.
Another feature of the site is the hotel finder, you can type in the location you are planning to visit and your check-in and check-out dates. A list of hotels will appear, where you can read reviews, check availability and book. Search filters are available to narrow your search if you wish. Not only can you search and book hotels, but also flights. Links are provided to tour operators and also holiday parks to make bookings for holidays.
One of my favourite things about the site is the 'restaurant finder'. I was visiting Edinburgh recently and clicked on 'Restaurants' and typed in 'Edinburgh'. The option appeared for me to enter a particular type of restaurant, ie - Indian, and also what I was looking for, ie - romantic meal, child friendly, outdoor seating, takeaway option etc to narrow your search if you are looking for something specific. You can also specify a price range.
After making my selections, a list of suitable restaurants in Edinburgh appeared and were listed in order of popularity with the members of TripAdvisor. You can click on a restaurant, read reviews and diner ratings and even reserve a table at some of them via Top Table, which when clicking on the link takes you to a section to book your table.
So this really is a one-stop place when booking a hotel, holiday or short-break/overnight stay, as you can plan and book your trip via the site and even book your restautants!
There is a lot of useful information on the site and simply by typing in a location, information will appear, informing you of accomodation, attractions in the area, restaurants, special offers and traveller articles, as well as a brief history of the place. Photographs and video guides are available and there are pdf files available to download which gives you free guides to your chosen location.
It is a very comprehensive and useful site and one I cannot do without before booking a holiday or hotel. I only wish I had found it sooner, as I booked a disastrous holiday 18 months ago, and had I read the reviews beforehand I would not have gone!
Make TripAdvisor your first stop when booking a hotel or holiday.
Advantages: EXtremely wide and useful information Disadvantages: Site is a little bit busy, and sometimes it is confusing
...food and location
Overall, wherever you are booking a hotel, I would say that a quick visit to tripadvisor.com for some independent feedback from ex guests is essential. Recommended. Note, not all the criteria below apply, as you cannot make purchases via this site. ...

Well another holiday related review...
OVERVIEW
-----------------------
I found tripadvisor by mistake and strangely a lot of my friends have never heard of it. Thought I'd spread the word as its a fantastic tool to help you research before your hols (if you are lucky enough to have one coming up!)
So what is it? Tripadvisor calls it's self a travel forum. It'sa huge site with lots of different features, so I'll try to summarise the main features ... ...this is by far the most helpful part. Tripadvisor seems to have listed almost every hotel in the world, and invites people to write in and review them. The reviews tend to be short, and have a written part followed by a mark out of 5. It's a bit like a 'Mini Ciao' for hotels! Amazingly, there are so many reviews, people seem very keen and willing to share their experiences. They list all types of accommodation from Luxury 5 star mega hotels in Hong ...

Advantages: Excellent, honest reviews of hotels all over the world Disadvantages: No photos, just written accounts
Those of you who have read my other reviews will have guessed by now that I'm a serial mini-breaker. There's nothing I love more than packing my bag on a Thursday evening ready to scoot off straight after work on a Friday on another weekend adventure.
The vast majority of my trips are booked on-line, usually combining budget flights with budget accommodation, or taking advantage of online special offers at luxury hotels if it's a special treat!
... ...me quite nervous. Unlike friends of mine who get into the holiday spirit in the cab on the way to the airport, I can't settle until I've checked in. I’ve come to the realisation that this is because I live in constant dread of finding myself on a holiday from hell, in a hotel that resembles a building site, where the service is appalling and the room is filthy. Thankfully, this has never happened to me, and I put this down to hours of careful ...

Advantages: Unbiased independent hotel reviews Disadvantages: None
I love the tripadvisor website and use it solely for finding somewhere to stay when I am planning a holiday.
My advise is to find the name of a hotel/bb that you are considering staying at and then type it into google. Then click the tripadvisor search result and have a look at INDEPENDENT traveller reviews. This is particularly useful as it cuts out all the misleading information and choreographed pictures that you find in the glossy travel brochures. ... ...from people that have actually been there, but also candid traveller photos which show the "real" holiday you will be getting. I have never been let down by the site and recommend it to friends and colleagues when they are booking holidays. The idea is perfect and despite it being owned by expedia, I have not seen any bias in the reviews published.
Another good aspect of the site is that the owner/managers of a hotel can respond to consumer comments ...

This site is fantastic for those of us who like to know what we're buying. Exactly the sort of people that use Ciao.co.uk in fact. I first discovered Tripadvisor when looking for a honeymoon destination. Simply go to the site and type in the place, hotel etc that you want to read reviews on. There are also forums and general information available so you really can get the full picture, however good or bad.
First of all, we booked to go to Cuba after ... ...fantastic, detailed reviews and user opinions on the actual food served and its quality, facilities etc that the shiny brochures seem to gloss over. In our search, we were able to reject a fair few hotels that seemed amazing in the brochures!
Anyway, the Cuban honeymoon fell through thanks to Cosmos (but thats another story!), so we had another look and opted for clubhotel Riu Negril (See seperate review). It looked amazing (some tripadvisors had ...
