Tripod used to be one of the leaders along with geocities in free webpages and e-mail accounts to go along with them, however, through a series of stupid mergers the company is trying to be too much like it's counterpart, Lycos, which is defective in itself. I have nothing personally against Tripod really, I have no vendettas or axes to grind, I just know a lot about them through a lot of web experience using their free webpages and web management tools.
Tripod is one of the few webpage providers that's been able to design an effective web development community, while you don't feel a closeness to your neighbors, because you really don't feel like you have any, you do have lots of options to go with in designing and maintaining your page. You can also join a large list of clubs and help groups that can help you out in the design and creation of your page or in the implementation of new sections for your site. Very very useful, the help that some of the experienced codewriters can provide is invaluable, I myself help out quite a few people with their coding.
One problem with Tripod from a developer's point of view is that their javascripts NEVER, I mean, NEVER work. They are always messed up so sometimes you can't upload, move files, delete files, etc. My biggest problem is my inability to delete files, that option never seems to work for me even using different browsers and everything. SO, I have a CGI bin filled with a ton of old HTML and SHTML files that I most likely will never even consider using again. So, my space is being quickly consumed with every update or trial. NOT GOOD!
Another issue with Tripod are the annoying popup banners. By using the popup banners sure Tripod makes a lot more money and that's the idea behind business and sure the pages are free so they should be able to do that, however, they are quite annoying. If they only popped up on your mainpage that would be fine, but they pop up on every page and you close one and get another. You back out, you get one. You basically have to put up with a lot just to look at a page and it makes that page, so much less attractive. In fact, I hate it so much that I don't even go to sites on geocities or Tripod anymore unless I really have to.
They do have some navigation problems on their site as well. It's kinda hard to find the answers to the questions you have. It's hard to do quite a bit of the things that you want to do. They have too much information that could easily be compiled into a better system, but for some reason they haven't realized this.
I don't recommend Tripod, if you're going to get a free webpage provider in the near future, try out fortunecity.com or xoom.com, bother are very good and they provide lots of options and more webspace along with your account. Not to mention, they have tons of options as well, including better community feeling and effort.
If you want to know how to break the popup boxes on all of your freepages, this is what you do, but you didn't hear this from me. :) You just place a <noscript tag in the bottom of the page after the </html tag. Don't close the <noscript tag though or it won't work. Javascript is added to the bottom of the page with most CGI generated scripts, so that will kill it properly. Good luck if you decide to go with Tripod anyway after my warnings, just be very careful to back everything you do up or you could quite possibly lose it.
Advantages: FREE and easy to use with expansive space on offer Disadvantages: The "Unbearable Pop-ups"
Tripod is the easiest web hosting site to use, the largest and one of the fastest (Considering these services are classsed as "read slow"). But its pop-up windows containing advertisements are making me look for another web hosting company.
I signed up to the site about one month ago, and as a first time user, I found Tripod an excellent site due to its partner FTP software called Trelix Web.
I actually found that you could host a site on Tripod ... ...my new computer that had Trelix Web pre installed. As I was playing around with making a web site, I decided to look at what publishing deals were on offer through Trelix Web.
I found Tripod and chose it simply becuase it gave me a fairly expansive size (50mb) and with the ability to upgrade this size to 100MB if necessary. SO I signed up and found it so easy to upload my website, I knew that Tripod was the web host for me.
That was until I asked ...

Advantages: Free web hosting, free scripts and site building tools Disadvantages: The ads plaster your web page, they're everywhere!
Tripod was once a independent web hosting site but was recently taken over by Lycos. When I first started out designing
web pages and needed web space, tripod was one of the sites I used for web space. Free web space is always good. It is a
great way to get your web site online with the minimal amount of knowledge of what it takes to create, upload and maintain a web site.
The design and navigation of this web site is great and everything is easy ... ...tools and scripts available from complete designed web pages where you only have to add your text and images.
Scripts available include hit counters and guestbook, every site needs a hit counter! The sign up process is quick and you can even have your own web site online within minutes. You can upload your web site through your own webmaster control panel or you can use your own FTP program to get your files on to the
server.
You can always use ...

I was lloking for a way of setting up my own web page and Tripod seemed a cheap (Free in fact) way of doing this.
I have checked out a number of different options but none are that impressive.
Tripod offer free web space and a number of tools to help you build your web site. You can access the site by ftp and upload or download files to your site.
It has been a bit slow lately but they apparently moved to new servers last night so hopefully it ...

Advantages: Free, very easy to use, "pods" of like minded sites to generate publicity Disadvantages: pop-up window
Having used Tripod.com for my first website because of the large amount of webspace available and the ease with which their software enabled me to create pages, I leapt at the chance to have a UK site when the UK branch opened. You get 100mb to use on your site and I defy anyone to use that much without resorting to major downloads or video clips. If you're looking to earn money from your site or simply generate publicity then Tripod offer "Pods" ... ...Each month a site within the Pod is made "Best of Pod" and featured on Tripod for all to see. Unusually for a free site, the tripod sites do seem to get listed very asily on search engines. I've always been told that your own domain name will be listed higher than a free site, but in the case of Tripod this doesn't seem to be the case. My Tripod sites have consistently performed better than my domain name sites despite identical content.
My only ...

Advantages: Free Disadvantages: Banner ads on pages
http://www.tripod.co.uk/index.html
I have put three sites up on Tripod and have found them OK. Apart for the banner ads that pop-up on each page, that is unless your register and pay for a domain name. I haven't used the Homepage Builder as it is very basic and does not allow you to create a very pleasing site.
I would think that a newcomer to web page authoring may have a little trouble using their builder. I would suggest learning something like ... ...does support Frontpage Extensions so you will have no problem putting page counters etc on your site. They have also built a community for web page sumitters called Pods. I haven't used it but I should think that many people do. For free web hosting Tripod is not too bad. ...
