Tripod was once a independent web hosting site but was recently taken over by Lycos. When I first started out designing
web pages and needed web space, tripod was one of the sites I used for web space. Free web space is always good. It is a
great way to get your web site online with the minimal amount of knowledge of what it takes to create, upload and maintain a web site.

The design and navigation of this web site is great and everything is easy to access and get to. There are plenty of
extra tools and scripts available from complete designed web pages where you only have to add your text and images.
Scripts available include hit counters and guestbook, every site needs a hit counter! The sign up process is quick and you can even have your own web site online within minutes. You can upload your web site through your own webmaster control panel or you can use your own FTP program to get your files on to the
server.

You can always use your free web space to upload your own designed web page, which is a lot better than using the page
builder tools.

All web pages hosted by Tripod are listed in their directory so other users can find your web site. If you are a company
wanting to have a web site, free web hosting from this web site is not recommended!

Tripod web hosting is great for beginners who want to test the waters of owning a web site, but if you want to take
things seriously you need to get your own domain name, a .co.uk name can cost as little as £5.50 for two years and web
hosting from E-bay can be found at £7.99 for unlimited web hosting for a year! Of course, having your own domain
requires a lot more knowledge in designing web pages, but if you want a decent professional web site, that you want
people to take seriously this must be done. Most pages hosted on free web hosts are looked down upon, especially ones
that use the site builder tools to create a page, it is obvious when this type of tool has been used. A usual domain
address at this web site looks like http://members.lycos.co.uk/yourusername, which is
lengthy and never really taken seriously or ever remembered.

Some web sites I have viewed lately on Tripod / Lycos have up to four adverts on them! One site had two banners at the
top, one of them an annoying ad that stays on screen even when you scroll down the page and a pop advertisement...terrible. On the looks of things from the outside it sounds great all this free stuff, but it comes at a
price with these adverts. There's even an opportunity to sign up for an affiliate program, which means even more adverts
on your web site!

This web site is great for beginner to make use of the free tools, but if you want to be taken seriously do the above! Tripod offers many more web hosting options that are paid for and I'd strongly
recommend paying instead of going for the free deal. You need to establish what your web site is to be for, before deciding to
opt for free hosting with a bad address. A free web host with great uptime, probably the best free hosting available though!
