I though I'd try out this little known search engine today, just because there are not many other (only 1 actually) opinions on it, here on ciao.

I'm busy working on a college assignment on The Seashore, and I'm looking for some quite detailed stuff on periwinkles, whelks and anemones. Yahoo was getting a bit run down after I'd checked just about every site they had (well...not really, there are too many for me to check them all). ...

After a slow start up, I was reasonably impressed by the look of the site. They still have some of their Christmas decorations up at the moment so it’s looking ok. It is actually pretty clear and easy to read compared to some of the other search engines. It has a black background, with yellow and black (on the yellow) writing. Not too small, it is just right.

So I though that this would be well worth a try (for some reason, the other op. on it has 4 stars).

I was eager to get on with my search (Not search, FIND – that’s what they say). Typing in the things I wanted, it came back time after time, showing me results 1-0 of 0. After finding it totally useless for my needs, I had a look around to see what it actually COULD do.

I started typing short descriptions of some of my hobbies and likes.

Put in surfing, ukdirectory gives me 45 sites to visit, yahoo gives me 64
Type fishing, ukdirectory finds me 237, yahoo, 221. UKDIRECTORY is the winner!!

But that was it!!! You’ll have to take my word for it (cos I can’t be bothered to sit here all day listing things like this), but that was the only thing that ukdirectory was better on. Their results weren’t that useful though. It had more on accommodation, down here in Newquay than anything else. There obviously is surf here (sometimes), but I was expecting something different.

The reasoning behind it giving such limited results, in terms of subjects anyway, is because it is a UK search facility. Only searching the UK and Ireland (I think). To keep things even, while searching in Yahoo to compare the two, I made the point of setting this on its UK setting also.

This site is quite a slow one. I could actually type in the subject in ukdirectory, click the find button, then go into yahoo (on a different page) and repeat the process. Then I could just wait there at yahoo for the results to pop up (a matter of seconds), have a quick browse through there, then go back to ukdirectory before it had even put up any results on the screen. Ukdirectory actually only has 10 on screen at once, which is a bit limiting really (others like yahoo have 20). They are nicely listed though, and I actually prefer their way of doing it to Yahoo’s (except for there only being 10).

Overall, it’s a slow site, which has a very limited range of information. Some people will undoubtedly find it useful though if they are searching for something more general. It is very easy to use though. Perhaps it’s only decent feature.
