With these prices there is no reason not to buy your very own domain name. UK Reg are offering domain names at bargain bucket prices with the basic extras that you will need to start using your newly purchased domain name.
~~~~ Security ~~~~ When you set up an account with UKReg you give them your credit card details. You can also use Switch or Solo cards if you prefer. I have bought several domain names from them and I have always been billed correctly for my purchases. I was initially wary about this as I have been ripped off by another domain name reseller, but take my word for it UKReg are a reputable company.
~~~~ Prices ~~~~ These prices really are low. If you are registering less than 10 domain names the prices are currently £5.90 for a two year .co.uk registration and £9 for a one year .com registration. Prices reduce if you are registering names in bulk but not by very much. At these
prices I don't think they have much margin for a reduction.
~~~~ Update 01/03/01 ~~~~ UK Reg are now selling .tv domain names. These can be registered from 1 to 10 years and are priced per year according to the number of years you will be registering for. If you are just going to register for one year the cost is £31.95. If you intend to register for 100 plus years the cost is £26 per year.
~~~~ Domain Credits ~~~~ If you are planning on registering several domain names you can purchase domain credits. These are either for .co.uk or .com (or a mixture of both) and you can spend them at any time. The idea of domain credits is that you don't have to put through multiple credit card transactions in one day. Credit card companies get suspicious about a high number of transactions coming from the same company and may refuse to pay. Added security for you really.
~~~~ Registered Domains ~~~~ Once you have paid for your domain name it will be registered within 48 hours. You will get a note from UKReg telling you this has been done and to double check you can go to http://www.nic.uk/whois.html (for.co.uk domains) or https://www.enom.com/ (for .com domains) and search for your domain name, the search returns information about who the domain is registered to. At a later point you will receive a domain certificate through the post.
~~~~ Getting Your Site Online ~~~~ UKReg do not give you any server space to host your website. You now either need to purchase server space (UKReg are owned by FastHosts who offer this service) or use the free web space offered by your ISP. It doesn't matter where you host your page, it can still use the domain name you have registered, keep reading to find out how!
~~~~ WHAT YOU GET FREE WITH YOUR DOMAIN ~~~~~
~~~~ Website Forwarding ~~~~ This is how you get your domain name to point to the space you have uploaded your site to. You sign in to the UKReg site and fill out a very simple form giving details of where your site is physically located (for example when you type in my domain of http://www.kathryn-evans.co.uk you are actually routed to the domain http://www.penguinweb.org.uk/kathryn/). When website forwarding is active your original domain will stay in the address bar giving your visitors no idea that your site is actually hosted elsewhere. UKReg do not put advertising or banners on your site and you are not required to link to them.
~~~~ E-Mail Forwarding ~~~~ You can forward up to 50 different email addresses, each to a different mailbox if you like. On the UKReg site you simply type in the email address you want to use (e.g. dooyoo@kathryn-evans.co.uk) and the address you want to forward this email to (e.g. penguinweb@hotmail.com). You also get the option to forward anything at all which is typed using your domain name to a nominated account (e.g. if you typed yourname@kathryn-evans.co.uk I would receive your email in my hotmail account).
~~~~ 100% DNS Control ~~~~ You can move your domain to another ISP without any charge. This means if you buy some server space elsewhere you can simply move your registered domain name to your new home.
~~~~ Auction ~~~~ At these prices you might as well buy some domains as an investment (if you can think of a good one!). UKReg give you a free listing on their auction service should you wish to sell your domain.
