With lots of advertising Virginmoney is currently branding itself as the best place to begin your financial planning. The site is well constructed and pretty idiot proof. The advice is a little simplistic but generally relevant for most people. A number of wizards help you to make smart decisions, so if, for example, you don’t know what type of ISA you need, it will take you through a set of questions and make some recommendations at the end.
Simple and neat as the site is, I do have a number of reservations.
1) There are a number of e-partners who seem to get extra profile for their products. It is unclear how independent the advice is about their products and services.
2) The site is slow with bits of flash make some bits down right ponderous.
3) The share dealing system is good value at £14.95 all in with no monthly charges etc. However, it is operated through Sharepeople and doesn’t seem to give you as good access to information as a full Sharepeople customer would get. Also to view your portfolio takes four clicks, a password entry and always requires a frustrating bit of flash to run. I actually have replicated my portfolio on Yahoo and look at it there with one click instead!
