### Registration
Registration at this web site is simplicity itself. You need only to download your E mail, name, address, dob, gender,a brief bio and travel preferences and hey presto--- you are a member of a growing community of inveterate travellers.
### Home Page
Members have an individual home page which provides brief biographical data and ladies you can obscure your age if you so wish. Your travel pages which have been read and rated are listed, and other members pages read by you are shown. On the home page incoming messages are recorded, there are E mail facilities to contact others, and you can also send a postcard to your friends. Other facilities include the the ability to access the top rated members and to search by country, city and member.
### Travel Pages
Naturally the content and illustrations on travel pages vary considerably but usually there are recommendations regarding accommodation,eating-out,great sites and places to see and visit, things to avoid, transport, and many pages have stunning photographs. The standard of writing here is high and it is also evident that many members adore travel and their passion shines through. The format of the travel pages tends to encourage "tight"writing and there are not many wasted words. Other members ratings and comments on travel pages are depicted and I find this is a most useful feature of this fun site.
### Tools
Virtual Tourist has a variety of useful tools including
. Check currencies . Metric convertor . Translator . Time zones . Travel warnings ### Travel Store
The web site has even got on an on- line travel store where,eg,you can book flights, rent hire cars, get travel insurance and book hotel accommodation. I have yet to avail myself of these facilities so cannot fairly comment on them.
### Overall Impression
My overall impression is favourable: the site is a breeze to navigate,is bright and cheerful and the travel community a very friendly one. I have recieved numerous postcards and good wishes from people in Brazil, Korea, the USA, Croatia, Netherlands and the UK. They do not pay for contributions so it has to be a labour of love. I find it is a site I do not check out that regularly and normally I visit it,on avarage, twice a month. I tend to restrict my visits to travel pages that feature my favourite cities or to places that I might just visit in the future. For the casual surfer Virtual Tourist is a great site to obtain useful travel information and see some beautiful pictures. Arguably it is less useful for the travel "expert" and for professionals working in the travel industry.
Advantages: informative, interesting Disadvantages: confusing layout to start of with
Travel the world virtually and get a serious case of wanderlust with virtual tourist. The basic concept of the site is that members write about their travels at home and abroad. There are over 284,000 members from 223 countries so there is a lot of variety which makes it interesting. Registering is free and easy all you need to do is give your e-mail address and choose a member name and password. After registering you get your own home page, tools ... ...case you want to write to other members). On your home page there is a little map which you can shade red to show the countries you have been to. I liked doing this, very sad! Also you can tick your travel interests i.e hotels, adventure travel, beaches. These will then appear on your home page. There is an 'update manager' on your home page that takes you through building pages step by step. These travel pages form the backbone of the site. There ...

Virtual Tourist is an excellent website for anyone wanting more information on where they might be going for their holidays. The full address is www.virtualtourist.com and my name is Binnie over there.
All you need to do to join is type in your name in which you want to be known, and your password and email address.
You are then ready to create your homepage. You will need to have a scanner to put you own photos on the page and they have to be ... ...if I can do it then anybody can..
You then click on the map to add a location in which you want to do an article about. You can still write about places that you have been to if you haven't got a scanner but it does get you more viewing if you put photos on your page.
If you don't want to create a homepage , you can still look at other peoples pages, they give you a real insight to the places you might want to visit, far better than a travel agents ...

Advantages: Good information and community Disadvantages: Couple of sections not much use
When it comes to going on holiday I have to admit to being a compulsive organiser and scheduler. I wish I was one of those people who could get off a plane and just go with the flow. I like to have every single guide book available and even this isn’t enough. I need to have checked every possible web site for some local information and maybe a few attractions off the beaten track. With this I have an "itinerary" which in theory allows us to make ... ...this point I no doubt sound like the most annoying person to travel with. To be fair the reality is always different mostly due to late morning (even afternoon) starts from drunken late nights. At this point all the best laid plans descend into chaos. And in my defence we have unearthed some great places that we would not otherwise have found. One of the web sites I have used for many years for unearthing these gems is Virtual Tourist - or "VT" as ...

Advantages: Get First Hand Information on Destinations from Real People Disadvantages: Very Addictive-Forget the Ironing Girls
I joined Virtual Tourist about a year ago, however I didn't actually offer up any pages on it until October 2000. The truth is I felt a bit intimitdated when I saw some of the exotic places other Virtual Tourist members had been to and felt my best offering at the time of two weeks in Orlando may be sneered at. How wrong could I be! When I eventually did get around to offering a few titbits of advice about Orlando, without any photo's as I hadn't ... ...had received a lovely comment at the bottom of my page within 24 hours. "Great start, I love your comments" it said. That was all I needed. From that day I was like a little demon, digging out photo's of holidays in Greece and Spain more than ten years ago, uploading them onto pages with whatever I could remember about the holiday scribbled beside them. The nice comments or "ratings" soon followed. Within two weeks I was number 546 in the top 1000 ...
