I have been a member, not a very active one, of Virtual Tourist for some nine months now and find it to be a veritable goldmine of information for useful, travel information. You can get up-to-date travel information on the likes of recommended accommodation, the best bars, good restaurants, the most interesting attractions, heritage sites, theatres, and entertainment outlets for countries ranging from Australia to Zimbabwe and for cities from Amsterdam ... ...over the world and you can obtain a very cross-cultural perspective by reading the travel pages on,say,London, written not only by British residents but by visitors from Korea,Japan, Singapore,Croatia,Brazil, the US, Germany and other countries.
Some members are very prolific with travel pages on a dozen or more countries and cities but ashford has been less productive with home pages on just three cities, viz,London,Liverpool and Kuala Lumpur.

Advantages: informative, interesting Disadvantages: confusing layout to start of with
Travel the world virtually and get a serious case of wanderlust with virtual tourist. The basic concept of the site is that members write about their travels at home and abroad. There are over 284,000 members from 223 countries so there is a lot of variety which makes it interesting. Registering is free and easy all you need to do is give your e-mail address and choose a member name and password. Advantages: view real life phots Disadvantages: none
Virtual Tourist is an excellent website for anyone wanting more information on where they might be going for their holidays. The full address is www.virtualtourist.com and my name is Binnie over there.
All you need to do to join is type in your name in which you want to be known, and your password and email address.
You are then ready to create your homepage. You will need to have a scanner to put you own photos on the page and they have to be ... ...if I can do it then anybody can..
You then click on the map to add a location in which you want to do an article about. You can still write about places that you have been to if you haven't got a scanner but it does get you more viewing if you put photos on your page.
If you don't want to create a homepage , you can still look at other peoples pages, they give you a real insight to the places you might want to visit, far better than a travel agents ...

Advantages: Get First Hand Information on Destinations from Real People Disadvantages: Very Addictive-Forget the Ironing Girls
I joined Virtual Tourist about a year ago, however I didn't actually offer up any pages on it until October 2000. The truth is I felt a bit intimitdated when I saw some of the exotic places other Virtual Tourist members had been to and felt my best offering at the time of two weeks in Orlando may be sneered at. How wrong could I be! When I eventually did get around to offering a few titbits of advice about Orlando, without any photo's as I hadn't ... ...had received a lovely comment at the bottom of my page within 24 hours. "Great start, I love your comments" it said. That was all I needed. From that day I was like a little demon, digging out photo's of holidays in Greece and Spain more than ten years ago, uploading them onto pages with whatever I could remember about the holiday scribbled beside them. The nice comments or "ratings" soon followed. Within two weeks I was number 546 in the top 1000 ...
